Title: Teacher on Leave after Taking Students to Hooters
Post by: bijou on December 17, 2009, 10:47:19 AM
Quote
A Paradise Valley music teacher whose students performed at a presidential inauguration event has been put on administrative leave after taking 40 students to Hooters.

School district spokeswoman Judi Willis says that choir director Mary Segall accompanied choral students to an event last week, and during the outing the students ate lunch at a Hooters restaurant.

She says that Segall explained to officials that the restaurant, known for its waitresses' somewhat revealing attire, was the only place that could accommodate a group of that size. Segall could not be reached for comment. ...

That will be a field trip to remember. (http://www.abc2news.com/news/local/story/Teacher-on-Leave-after-Taking-Students-to-Hooters/M1oXWWPe8021OWkie_guCg.cspx)

If parents gave their permission, I have no problem with it, depending on the ages of the students.

From Hooters Website.
Quote
"Hooters characterizes itself as a neighborhood place, not a typical family restaurant. Sixty-eight percent of customers are male, most between the ages of 25-54. Hooters does not market itself to families, but they do patronize the restaurants. Ten percent of the parties we serve have children in them. Hooters is in the hospitality business and provides the best possible service to anyone coming through the door. For this reason, the chain offers a children's menu."

The waitresses probably wear as much clothing as some high school cheerleaders do.

I enjoy the cuisine at Hooteres.  Their spicy garlic wings are tasty.

What about those teachers who get fired for taking kids to strip clubs? Kevin Jennings approved of course.

He would have approved of taking them to bathhouses in San Francisco.

I read somewhere that Jennings approved a curricullum that encouraged little kids to have sex in the bushes with strangers. I dunno.

Freak.

Schools, and far too many parents, are so damned over-reactive.  It's a damn' restaurant, middle of the day, BFD if the waitresses are in short-shorts, and the kids will be telling this story for the next five years.  Parents, try letting it go enough that your kids are prepared for life in the real world and don't go apeshit as soon as they are out from under your thumb.

last time I was at Hooters was about a 8-9 months ago. In KC, KS. Late afternoon, figured "what the hell?" and went in  for some wings.

Two people working. Very attractive young lady behind the bar. Thought "this could be interesting..."

Wasn't aware how correct I was.. .until I saw she was ~8 months pregnant.  :rotf: :rotf:

That teacher just vaulted herself into "legend" status among those kids with this move.

Holy crap!  Parents don't have enough to gripe about?  My kid's (10 years old) football coach promises to take them to Hooters if they win the championship every year!  He also tells them to put vinegar on their balls.  I have no idea what that is supposed to do but it is funny when your 10 year old asks you if you have any vinegar. :rotf:

I would hazard a guess that the girls working at hooters are more clothed than the girls at the public pool.

Sheesh.

I love the fried pickles at Hooters.  And the Crab legs.  I used to have an assistant that worked there part time, and I would get free beers if I sat in her station.   :cheersmate:

Not a thing wrong with going to Hooters. Short shorts yeah but they wear those 12 mil thick nylons. Truthfully I haven't seen any Hooters of note either. They come in much larger sizes than I've seen there.  :naughty:

That is exactly what a lot of kids do. I have never seen anyone "prepared for life" in High School.

The article doesn't state the age of the children...I, for one, wouldn't be happy about a teacher taking MY daughter to hooters.  I may sound like party pooper, but I feel Hooters objectifies women, and I don't want MY daughter exposed to it.  If a teacher is going to take MY daughter on a field trip, it better be an educational one.

I, too, would object to my child being taken to Hooters for a meal.  Not the kind of values I promoted to my children.  They grew up to be a fine and diverse group of adults, too.

It would depend on the age of the children, but I would tend to agree with you; I have a 5 y.o. daughter, and at this point I do not want her exposed to that crap - she'll get enough of it when she's old enough (and hopefully well enough prepared to deal with it constructively - like with a 2"x4" ;) ).

I don't think Hooters is a good place to take a group of students.

Kids have enough issues trying to self identify themselves, let alone having the school boys compare the school girls to the wait staff.

Hey, sometimes Hooters can be a lucrative post-high school career for a while.  I think some of the gals I went to high school with ended up working there.  So it could be an apt comparison. :-)

(Disclaimer, none of the ladies any of you may have seen pictured with me elsewhere on the internets worked at Hooters)

Hmmmm, objectifying women, eh....hmmmmm, then we'd best keep them off the beach all summer, away from fashion shows, State Fairs, Circuses, pools with female lifeguards and so on.

Hooters I've been to maybe 6 times, about half of them with my wife and kids ( before they grew up) .  Seemed to me that there was more sexuality to the idea than there was in the execution.  If there was one within 5 miles, my wife and I would go there maybe every other week when we wanted releaf from the usual sitdown restaurant and wanted a very informal setting.

So I have this quacky friend, that says she won't go to Hooters because it objectifies women.  Alrighty then, if that floats your boat.  I disagree personally. But, then I told her that she was a hypocrite, because she has one of the biggest selections of porn I have ever personally seen.

(Not that I have seen alot of collections, but it was voluminous)

I think hooters is fine for adults...but not on school children...and not up to the schools' discretion...but the parents.

Now, one of my close friends brought her young 3 y/o son to Hooters once because Hooters was the only establishment with electricity after the entire neighborhood was without after a Hurricane.
Now that's okay... :-)

Have you taken a good look at some modern day HS girls?  They aren't exactly lacking in the female physical attributes.

The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders wear less than a Hooters girl.  Random statement....

Just because an activity can be called "work" doesn't make it acceptable.  There are certain jobs that I wouldn't approve of.

Going to the beach?  There is a big difference between going to the beach with friends and/or family and going to some beach on spring break to party like some do.

Using terms like "working" and "going to the beach" are too general.  I can see a lot of differences along the continuum of either.

The birkenstock twit's actually in the wrong place - whatever their attire, those women (other than birkie) are working, not merely standing around trying to attract attention (funny, that's precisely what birkie's doing, though).

Yes indeed.  Waiting tables and serving food is an evil and vile occupation.

Sure can be.  Just to give examples distant from each other:  Waiting tables at a topless club is very different than waiting tables at a local diner that serves families and business people.  In my opinion a "Hooters" type place doesn't fit into family friendly for the kind of people I wanted my children to be with.

While my kids were young, I had input into the type of environments where they spent time.  Nothing unusual there.
