The job is dragging me out to San Diego, Tues - Thurs of this week.
I have to say I'm suffering from a "Meh!" factor of 11.

Can you run over a few Charger fans for me? /sarc

Take advantage of the situation. El Indio is one of the best mexican joints out there. It's located just off of I-5 and Washington. Then there's the Old Town area that's pretty neat. The Star of India is kind of cool. Then you could even get the chance to see how us Sailors live with a trip to NAS North Island and possibly take a tour of one of the carriers based there or any of the ships at 32nd St. Stay away from Tijuana, ESPECIALLY at night. Also, my judo coach is the PAO of the USS Midway, so there's something else to do if time permits.

I think San Diego is a loverly place to visit.
-
Downtown has really improved--I highly suggest Horton Plaza and the area immediately around there. Watching the sunset from the top of the Gaslamp Marriott (Altitude Sky Lounge) is a MUST.
And Thor, dear man, I hate to tell ya, but El Indio has dropped off considerably. Santana's has a better carne asada burrito these days. I'd suggest Casa de Loma on Rosecrans (across from old NTC), or if you're into Japanese, Yakitori II, which is on Sports Arena Blvd. near Midway. On the other side of Midway (still on Sports Arena) is Embers. AWESOME wood-fired pizza.
Then again, if you're around downtown, stick to the Horton Plaza area--can't go wrong.
Coronado--McP's, but only if you are a SEAL--not a really good Irish pub. However, right down the block is Miguel's (also one in Point Loma.)

Sparky, last time I was in San Diego was in 2004 for the Nationals Judo Tournament. I didn't get a chance to get to El Indio. That doesn't surprise. I DO recall a bar that just fit Snug's bill just fine. It was called; "The Flame"......

ROFLMAO--Lemme guess--right in the middle of Hillcrest, no doubt?

Because you'd get jealous of the jarheads?

Why would they want to spell it? They can kill it.

"Squids" don't exactly hang out there. It's mainly for Army Doggies...

Does your sister still work the parking lot?

Go to the zoo and see the pandas.
It is awesome to see the carriers at No Island. When I was out there the Reagan was in port. It just makes you proud!

Some people from the office just got back and they saw the Reagan.
Alas, I'm in classes Wed and Thu until 1700 and I fly back out Fri AM...no time. Still, I have $71/day per diem and I plan to eat.

When I was there to see my son....we went to an area that had several Italian restaurants near downtown. Don't remember the name of the one we went to except it was on the east side of the street, and had a huge outdoor dining area - bigger than inside. Someone who knows San Diego well might know it. It was delicious.

But seriously, what part of SD? Might help with attractions and the like.

Beat me with a stick if I know.
Wherever the Manchester Grand Hyatt is at.
-
If you make it out to Pac. Beach, The Fishery has some great food and it's inexpensive by CA standards. All the seafood is awesome.
-
Looks like you're right by the water. :p

Downtown. Top of the Hyatt is probably the only better place to watch the Sunset than the Marriott--but you have to get there early. You probably won't even need a rental car...just take a cab from the airport to the hotel and pretty much everything you'll possibly want is within walking distance; Horton Plaza, the Gaslamp, etc...and the trolley runs right in front of the hotel.
However, I'd recommend Dick's Last Resort...about 3 blocks away...345 4th Avenue. Trust me on this one. You won't regret it.

That is pretty centralized to some of the tourist stuff. Gaslamp is right there a few blocks away.

I used to wait tables at a fairly raucous place called Jack Astor's. While the atmosphere was decidedly tongue-in-cheek many people would ask if we were the same concept as DLR. I would give them the treatment if they asked for it.
-
Ah--gotcha. Well, there's the Rock Bottom Brewery, Gordon Biersch (get the garlic fries!), there's also a Karl Strauss downtown, and if you get to Scripps Ranch there's the Ballast Point Brewery. All of them ROCK. Then if you're in the touristy shit there's the Kansas City BBQ on Harbor--same bar/joint that was used in the movie Top Gun, and the BBQ isn't all that bad either.

The Sailor Boys took me there..... :-)
-
I recommend the Cass Street Bar & Grill in P.B. It's kind of a grungy little dive bar, but they serve good food (really excellent cioppino) and they attract a friendly laid-back crowd. I've never had a bad experience there.

I was a Combat Cargo Chief for a few years, whenever one of the CPO's was retiring PCS'ing they always had to have the party at Dicks :hammer:. I had a female SgtMaj during my last tour and she always insisted that we do our going away events at Hooters!
-
I have been there a few times for work......the climate in San Diego is second to none. Have fun snugs!

Whenever I would visit my son.....he always brought along friends and I was the designated driver.
He's been moved back for a week now and friends have been here for dinner 3 nights....some things never change :whatever:

i had a decent meal last night: Balinese baby back ribs (although they looked too big to be from a human baby) and Jamaican jerk chicken [insert dirty pun here]. The hefferveisen was to die for and I'd go back for that alone...although they boke man-law by fruiting the beer.
Lunch today still has me feeling sick. It was supposed to be fettucini alfredo with artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes. In reality it was an over-cooked puddle of buttery grease.
Headin out to the gaslamp for sushi or crab legs or something.
