From a mass PM mailing of two DUmmies showing their capitalistic side.  :-)

The cymbals-clanging primitive's revealed his own name before, though.

He has some sort of web-site.....somewhere.

I'm still perplexed by four things, though.

Number one, what is "5% disabled" as it refers to military service?

Number two, why would one give up a nice job like flying all over around Alaska for the federal government, photographing the terrain?

Number three, can one lose a pilot's license by testing positive on a drug test?

Number four, why does his wife stick with him, after he lost her house?

The ways of the primitives are a mystery inside an enigma wrapped up in a riddle.

Wasn't Symbolman the DUmmy arrested outside GMA studios or something?

When you retire from the military you have a medical exam. Part of that is to assess your physical state and to set your 'disbility' rating for further compensation of retirement pay (also for VA benifits, if any). That is the simple explination, since it is government it is much more complicated.

Example;

I will retire in 18 months with 28 years service. That's 50% of my base pay + 2% for each year over 20 for 66% of base pay. My medical condition is kind of poor. I've lost hearing in one ear completely, and the other is a significant loss. I am partly blind in one eye. Both of these are service related. Furthermore, I was diagnosed with Pulminary Sarcoidosis and am in Stage IV of that desease.

With those things I am no longer deployable, and have had a medical board to see if I can still serve. They've chosen to let me stay in, but on limited duty.

When I retire I will go through a medical screening by the Army and the VA. They will give certain % for each thing that is FUBAR in my body, i.e. loss of eyesight in one eye = 12%. Then they add it up and that is your total disability rating.

In Colorado if you are over 50% disabled you get all sorts of bennies. Free Park permits being one of them.

5% diabilty means his penis is short and doesn't work well, anyway...

(it's not very high, that is.)

Most of them have their real names posted on Facebook.

Thank you for serving, and I hope and pray that you will be able to enjoy your well-deserved retirement.

Actually, I suspect dutch508 wants to return to the land and the people who gave him life, the Sandhills of Nebraska.

And it probably won't be any retirement; there's plenty to do out here.

(disclaimer: I live on the eastern slope of the Sandhills, while dutch508 is from the western slope, so there's a couple hundred miles between us--but his side has trees and bluffs and bighorn sheep and stuff, while my side has.....sand)

hate to break it to ya dutch, but hearing loss doesn't get ya much disability anymore.  all that time spent fitting you for earplugs.  they figure if you didn't wear em, it's your own fault, not the service's

Where this is true, getting blown up and having your ear blown out does count. From the guys I have talked to going through the system it all kind of depends on which doc you get and all the other crap. If it's noted in your medical file then you are good to go, or not.

The VA screen is even more subjective, I have heard.

One friend of mine retired a while back. Typical Cav dude, bad knees, bad back, hearing loss, ect. He had sleep apnia (sp) and had surgery for it while he was in. He came back from the VA with 85% disability.

18 more months and I'll be through...
(I'll be glad and so will you!)

Tinitus will get you 10% on the overall rating.  I know this to be a fact.

I ended up with 0% for my hearing loss with a recommendation for hearing aids (yeah, I need 'em), so if Dutch's is as significant as he says then I would say they will probably give him points on his overall.

God bless you, Dutch, and thanks for your time given to our country.  I put in 22 for the Navy and had absolutely no idear how broken I was until the DAV went through my records and started writing everything down.  Everything I claimed (13 things) were valid and service connected and they were actual, physical trauma that I had managed to get myself into and had just compensated for or kept my mouth shut about so I could stay on active duty.

I hate being retired and being away from my "kids" (troopers) but it was the best thing for my health.

BTW, 5% is pretty much for a whiner with a broke dick....

I have one hearing aid for the ear that hears. The other is a wash, I am afraid. My eye surgery was done down at Fort Sam, so that was well documented.

You know, for as much bitching as people do about the VA (and some of it is truly justified), the medical exam was actually very comprehensive and very good.  The docs weed out the whiners.  Well, at least mine did.

Yes, that is the plan. Run a few head of cattle, kick some chickens around the yard. Huge garden. Small Arms Ranges...Just the sort of thing I would imagine Centurio Rufio Agustus got after crushing all those nasty Gauls.

(We cut down our trees and throw them into South Dakota).

I'd forgo the chickens. The damn things crap everywhere and can destroy a garden in nothing flat! They are the one domestic that is outlawed here on the Ranch. I'd rather shovel pig and steer shit than step in chickenshit. Besides, their excrement reminds me of DUmmies.

ETA (oh, and we grow the trees here to replace the ones you throw into SD. Heh, heh)

My husband wore ear plugs, head set and a helmet and his baseline hearing has been adjusted three times so he can pass his hearing test to keep flying.   The first few years he was in B-52s they didn't even offer ear plugs.    Twenty-one years of flight time has bought him significant hearing loss.  They better give him a decent disability rating for that (and his back is toast from survival school decades ago -- hit the runway hard on a jump, has been steadily deteriorating every since).

He just retired and is going through the disability physical/paperwork now.  I'll let you know Dutch what they give him for his hearing.
