This thread is intended for those of us at CC to avoid bad beer selections at the liquor store or bar via the past experiences of these beers by other posters.
The reviews should include a general sense of the overall impressions of the beer and, if willing, the more subtle aspects of the brew: flavor, body, head, aroma, aftertaste and companion foods that work well with it.
Finally, a numerical rating should be given to the brew (with "1" being the worst and "10" being the best) after the review has been completed.

Awesome! :II:

Well here's my review................
Beer Good
Only thing better than beer is bacon.............mmmmm Bacon flavored beer :hyper:

Do not drink Fosters.
It's a blend of formaldehyde and sheep piss. The only reason we export it is because there aren't enough people here silly enough to actually drink the stuff. :-)

I remember very clearly when the U.S. Army would host the German/American Volksfest in Berlin.
The Berliners would line up for blocks to buy Budweiser and Miller beer in cans.
Now don't get me wrong - beer brewed in Berlin wasn't terribly good. Berliner Kindl was drinkable on tap, but barely; and Schultheiss tasted like vomit whether on tap, in cans or bottles. Charlottenburger Pilsener wasn't too bad, but the water was extremely hard in Berlin which, I guess, might explain the problem.
But for Germans to think that Americans know how to brew beer on a commercial basis always stunned me. Yeah, I know there are microbrews that are pretty good, but back in the Eighties there weren't a lot of those around.
Budweiser and Miller. God help me. :p

Well, if you don't drink Fosters, what do you drink? Please don't say Budweiser.
-
They sell mixed drinks in a can down there. How lucky can you be?
-
Leinenkugel's Original
A nice lager with a metallic first initial drink. Pretty smooth afterward. A good "hot weather" beer.
Overall Score: 8

Budweiser is swill.
If I'm not drinking home brewed beer I tend to favor either Tooheys Extra Dry or New , or Fourex (XXXX) Gold. I don't think they're exported.
Normally I just drink spirits - That you can get premixed ready to drink cans of them is really convenient when your mason jar runs dry a couple days before the fermenter stops.

Very interesting. Are hops expensive down there? They have gone up a bit here, and now seem to be getting more reasonable.

I just buy the "kit cans" from the supermarket / grocery store - or if I want something more exotic one of the brew shops in town.
I usually don't have an idle fermenter for beer - they're all in use making something that more closely resembles wine.

I can get Toohey's New at the liquor store down the street. I am just having trouble paying $11 for a sixer right now, though.

I'm a recent Blue Moon convert http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Moon_(beer) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Moon_(beer)) although I pass on the orange garnish.

NO fruit in beer! :-)
My current fave, although more so in the summertime is St. Arnold's Lawnmower. It is a Kolsch, and quite refreshing.
For Winter, I gravitate more towards Stouts and Porters. I do like Smithwicks.
The Sierra Nevada Celebration this year was quite good as well. But, Sierra Nevada never disappoints.

Blue Moon is definitely a summer drink, I stick with Sam Adams or Sam Light in the winter. Haven't tried Sierra Nevada yet.

Pacifico. Works well with seafood. Pleasant aroma, nice finish, small head. Amberish colored, not too sharp, pretty easy to drink 3 or 4 without noticing.
If I want to be snotty about beer I'll go get a Chimay.
But yeah, I'd have a few schooners of Fourex. And then pass out in the back of the local Diggers club. You guys make strong beer. Why is that?
Angst?

Chimay Blue is pretty strong on its own. As it's a Belgian beer, it's a weird one anyway. The Belgians are renowned for weird beer.
And Stella Artois is rat piss.

Pacifico is little more than "Tourista" beer.

After I got stationed in MN, I was introduced to a few good local beers. Leinenkugel's was one of them. That has to be one of my preferred American beers.

The Sierra Nevada Celebration is a holiday beer, and is always yum. You are in CA, so you shouldn't have much problem liking it. St. Arnolds, out of Houston is my favorite state micro brew, not a fan of Shiner. Sierra Nevada, and Fat Tire are my secondary choices.
-
Pacifico is little more than "Tourista" beer.
Pretty much ALL Mexican beer is "tourista" beer--aka goat piss.
Depends on the mood, kids:
Summer--Long Trail Blackbeary Wheat, Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, or Red Hook ESB.
Fall--Sam Adams Oktoberfest. Nuff said.
Winter--Red Hook Winterhook or Moat Mountain Apfel Bier.
Spring--Red Hook Copperhook (can you tell I like Red Hook?)
Anytime--Arrogant Bastard Ale. 22 oz bottles, 7.5 percent alcohol. Guiness. A few Smuttynose brews on tap.
In a pinch when I don't want the local formaldehyde in a bottle:
China--TsingTao or Carlsberg.
Japan--Kirin Ichiban, Sapporo if they don't have Kirin.
Guam--Nothing. Sitting on a 100-degree dock for two weeks turns it ALL to piss.
Singapore--Tiger, but not much at S$40 a "jug".
Australia--XXXX okay, but I liked Toohey's better. Didn't mind Victoria Bitter either (sorry, LC.)
Thailand--Kloster. Singha gives me a MONSTER headache.
Phillipines--San Miguel, 24 flavors per case, baby!
Europe--Guiness, Smithwicks, and last time I was in London I had a Kronenburg "White" ale that had an apricot flavor to it. Freakin. AWESOME.
-
Sam Adams Oktoberfest is okay. I prefer the Irish Red. Actually has that heartier that flavor that the Oktoberfest tries to produce, IMO.
-
Sapporo is Budweiser. I seem to remember reading somewhere that A-B couldn't get the rights to sell it in Japan unless they allowed a Japanese company to brew, bottle, and sell it for them.
The 'unofficial' biography (http://www.amazon.com/Under-Influence-Unauthorized-Anheuser-Busch-Dynasty/dp/0380718472/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262753477&sr=1-1) of the Anheuser Busch dynasty is an interesting read.
-
When I am in a different frame of mind, I love to treat myself to Lindemens (sp?) Lambics. The Framboise is my favorite.
And in the winter, I like a Woodchuck Cider on occasion as well. Speaking of piss beers.....Estrella Damn (Spain) tops my list of Foreign Beers. Beliken (Belize) was pretty darn tasty as I recall.
-
Back when I drank beer, there was none better on tap than:
Pilsener Urquell
Brewed in Pilsen, Czech Republic (used to be called "Czechoslovakia", but that was a couple decades ago), this is the beer that gave pils its name.
Refreshing without being sweet, hoppy without being bitter, the head fills the nostrils with the aroma that is half of the beer-drinking experience.
Not too cold, the flavor is simply unmatched. Rich without being heavy or too filling, it's heaven in a glass.
-
Iassa, I agree with you, NO FRUIT IN THE BEER!!! I had a buddy once who was always stuffing a lemon in the neck, and upending the bottle. I can't stand those limes they insist on sticking in the Coronas. In Mexican restaurants, you have to tell the waiter firmly: LEAVE THE LIME OUT.
Canadians and beer snobs will laugh at me, but I drink only one beer: Labatt's Blue. Laugh all you want, I like it lots.
-
Spaten Munchen
A nice lager-style brew with a clean drink, with distinguishable malting and a green hop flavor.
Overall Score: 9

In Bali, maybe, but not Singapore. NOTHING is cheap there.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
A very rich, but, thin stout. Has a dark tint even for a stout. Kind of a sweet mid-drink with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

I just got an email from my favorite beer store, and these are the new specials. Anyone have an opinion? Aside from the Rahr, I am going to try a few. I love the IPA, so Otter Creek is a must, and the Brew Dog as well. I might just get the Brew Dogs because I love the Scots. And they are so freaking cool!
# Abita Restoration Pale Ale
# Boulevard Harvest Dance Wheat
# Brew Dog Bashah Double IPA
# Brew Dog Hardcore IPA
# De Prouef Van Twee Belgian Ale
# Harpoon Leviathan Baltic Porter
# O'Hara's Irish Red
# O'Hara's Irish Stout
# Otter Creek Imperial IPA
# Pyramid Spring Fling Pale Ale
# Rahr Iron Thistle
# Real Ale Phoenixx ESB
# Red Hook Mudslinger Spring Ale
# Sam Adams Noble Pils
-
Abita usually has good brews, Pyramids are okay (their IPA is probably the best of their brews) and Boulevard makes one of the better hefeweizens I have drank.
-
I am a big fan of Abita. Not a fan of fruit beers, but their Strawberry one, in the summer is awesome. I have a six pack of Dixie in the fridge for the Super Bowl. It tastes like crap, just like the Mississippi River, but it was the first beer I ever had, in Gulfport. I like Pyramid as a general rule, but hefeweisen I have never developed a taste for. Strange. I will drink the hoppiest of the IPAs, the ones no one else will drink, but unless it is a hot summer day, wheats do not appeal.
-
Yeah, Dixie does taste like muddy water. Abita Turbo Dog is my favorite of theirs.
-
I am giving up beer and cigs for Lent. So tonight I am having a good beer or 6. :)
Real Ale Brewing Company, Blanco, TX
Full Moon Pale Rye Ale.
Light in color, but heavy in taste. If you want a lighter beer (not calories, but flavor) this one is a must.
Nice bitter aftertaste.
It is a good one when I can find it.
I give it a 9.
-
This is my favourite beer in the world...
It's a special release, they only make a small quantity every year...and the 2010 is coming out in a month or so.
I give this beer as close to a "ten" as you can get.

Damn near impossible to find any Stone Brewery stuff up here, unless you go to Kappy's down in Boston.

After 2 weeks in the bottle, my homebrew is starting to really come around. This stuff is good, and will kick your ass. Kinda like Newcastle on steroids. (almost 7% alc :o )

Samuel Smith's India Pale Ale
Nice pour from the 18.7 oz. (Victorian pint) bottle. Thick for an IPA with caramel and hop flavoring mid-drink. Smooth finish with negligible aftertaste.

I'm not a beer drinker...but I do enjoy one every now and then during the hot summer....
No preference..but this is what I buy...
Corona Light
Sam Adams
Fosters
I don't mind Stella Artois either.

In a blender, empty a large can of frozen limeade, fill the can with Quervo Gold, blend, then carefully pour in through the top opening, a bottle of Corona Light. Do a quick blend.
Pour over ice in a salt rimmed goblet....
Wicked margarita.... :-)

Ooooh..that sounds good! How many servings does that make? And can I put the ice in the blender so it's a "frozen margarita"?

Ooooh..that sounds good! How many servings does that make? And can I put the ice in the blender so it's a "frozen margarita"?
I went down and checked the can size ( I just happened to have one in the freezer :-) )....it's 12oz. Then there's 12oz of tequila, and how many ounces in the bottle of beer - 16? If you are adding ice, you will have even more...
I'm not a fan of frozen margaritas, but there's no reason you couldn't. It would dilute it more than pouring over ice. These are "sipping" margaritas....not swiggin'. I would do the ice and the limeade, then add the tequila and blend again, then add the beer last.
You have to be real careful when you add the beer and blend, so that it doesn't foam out all over the place. I speak from experience....it's a mess to clean up. :banghead:

-
Yes, you do tip it to add the beer, but it's when you quick "zap" it to blend the beer in, that if the lid isn't on tight, it foams out everywhere.

Summer's coming, time for the "fruity" beers. Some are God-awful, some are pretty damned good...

Sam's Cherry Wheat
Long Trail Blackbeary Wheat
UFO Raspberry Hefeweizen

Yeah, that might have been part of it. Draught beers are usually too carbonated. Come to think of it, beer wasn't that cold when served. The kegs probably weren't cold enough.
-
Not a fan of Bud in any form....but if any of y'all like a fruity beer, try the Abita Strawberry Harvest. Lord have mercy. It isn't all that fruity, and it is the shizzle. For real.
I bought the only case at my local beer place.

This summer I have been stuck on a Spaten Lager kick. (not Optimator). The beer store has it on sale for 11.99 a 12 pack, and that has been continuous since May.

Spaten's a good Munich beer (assuming we're talking German and not some American micro-brewery by the same name). I was surprised to discover that the famous German "Reinheitsgebot" (purity law) on beer was repealed a few years ago. (It was hurting business, apparently, and served as a form of trade protectionism which wasn't looked upon favorably in an EU-based Europe.)
Used to be only water, barley, and hops were the only ingredients permitted. Now, I read in Wiki that most commercial beer makers add yeast as well and even wheat malt and cane sugar can be added as well.
Damn. That law dated from 1516.

Somethings should remain the same. I hear Belgium beers are still brewed the same. Anheuser-Busch is the debil.

Samuel Smith's Organically Produced Lager
A very hoppy initial drink with a rich flavored mid-drink and bitter finish for a lager, in contrast with American lagers. Kinda disappointed with this one from what I know of their ales and stouts.
Overall Score: 8

There are a couple of Vermont microbrews I can pass judgment on:
Otter Creek: I tried the Summer Ale this summer, won't be buying that again. Kind of bland.
Long Trail: I have tried Long Trail Ale and their IPA (India Pale Ale), both are excellent, rich and hoppy.
-
Paulaner Wiesn Blonde
Finally got my mitts on this rare gem. A very heady pour with rich hop notes, a sweet mid-drink and surprisingly heavy. The finish is real sharp.
Very nice beer. Needs to be made available outside of Paulaner's Oktoberfest tent more often in these 1 liter cans.
Overall score: 9.5

Which explains why you were banned, you asshat. Moosehead was popular among college frat boys for about 10 seconds in the 1980's and tasted like rancid skunk piss.
You supposedly come from Maine and never had ANY decent beer? For that alone you should be banned from the Innerwebz forever.
Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale. I highly recommend it to all, while it's still available. Failing that, any Shipyard brew will work.

Real Ale Brewing Company http://realalebrewing.com/beer_styles.php
A up and coming Texas Brewery. Odin, make sure to look for some when you are on the proper side of the Red River. :-)
I haven't tried nearly all, but the Full Moon Rye, and the Firemans #4 are very good. They aren't heavy, and still manage to be very, very tasty.
I am keeping my eyes peeled for some of their seasonal selections coming up.

Damn the TSA...damn them all to hell. Curse their very living souls and those of their children for the lack of liquids allowed in carry on luggage...
I've already found a couple of local breweries in the soon-to-be-frozen tundra of Iowa...

I liked the Golden Hawk Wheat and tried the Double IPA that comes in at 9.5 percent.
Then there's Granite City. Oh my, as coach would say.

I hear ya. Prior to 9/11 I flew to Holland with a 6 pack of Sierra Nevada Celebration in my overnight. I have been to several places afterwards that I would have LOVED to bring some home, but curses to the TSA.

Just kicking this....
Guiness---Love the dark beers
Youngs Double Chocolate stout
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale(on draft it is most excellent)
Sierra Nevada Torpedo---hoppier tha the Pale Ale
Sweetwater IPA---Not as hoppy as the Sierra Nevada but still just as good
Sweetwater Pale Ale---Nice grapefruit taste, refreshing on a sumer day
Sweetwater Motorboat---nice hoppy taste, good body
Terrapin Rye---hoppy yet distinct. Good all around beer
Terrapin Hopsecutioner---Kind of like the Torpedo, but not as hoppy
Duval---Belgian ale. Very nice and smooth. Good relaxing and sitting by the fire beer
Founding Fathers has a couple of pretty good ones, I'll have to remember the names.
I've got some fresh hopped beer that I picked up from Total Wine made by Terrapin and Sierra Nevada. I usually wind up going to Taco Mac and trying different ones. Its fun. I'vve had some good ones and I've had some disgusting ones(Dogfish head Punkin ale, just nasty). I like hoppy beers mostly and some dark. Usually if I travel, I'll try the local micro-brewery.

Sounds like you and I would have a good fight over the last beer then! :cheersmate: I don't believe I have had any Terrapin. Going to the Flying Saucer tomorrow (pub with close to 200 beers), might have to see if they have some.
Although, since it is the holidays, I KNOW I will have some Lindemans Lambic, probably the framboise.
Speaking of framboise, the Frambrozen Raspberry Wheat that New Belgium has out is pretty darn good.
Speaking of Dogfish Head, anyone out here watching Brewmasters?

You know, life's too short to drink bad beer. I just like trying different ones. Some were awesome, some were, well, not so awesome. I haven't had any of the lambics. I'll have to give them a try. You're the third person to tell me about them. Terrapin is an Atlanta(Athens) brewery. They're trying to keep pace with Sierra Nevada and doing a good job. No fighting over beers here, we'll always have enough! :-)
I caught a glimpse of the brewmasters show that had them chewing corn and spitting it out and thought, that's just wrong.

It's in the bottle as of Saturday. Looks like it'll be just under 6% alc.
md11hydmec it's really simple as far as recipes go.
10 lbs of 2 row pale malt
1 lb crystal malt for color and body.
All grain no extract.
4oz Cascade hops, 2oz half way into the boil and the other 2 near the end.
No additives, I use a wort chiller so I don't get chill haze.
2 stage fermentation (I use almost any Ale yeast) and I let it "run out" for just over a week, just to make sure it's as dry as possible.
I should know how it came out in a week, but even at bottling it was tasty.

For any of you in NJ, Triumph Brewing in Princeton has a collection of killer micro-brews, every pint worth every penny.
I've never been to the Philly or New Hope locations, but the Princeton one is great. Food is great, too - a bit pricey, but that's to be expected.
I highly recommend their Honey Wheat and Imperial Stout. Especially a pint of the former followed by two or three glasses of the latter for an epic buzz. Ugh, I miss home...

I thought about going all grain, everyone on my brewing board called it the dark side. I stuck with extract. Loved my homemade wort chiller. Could take my wort from boiling to pitching them in about 5 minutes. Enjoyed the brewing process, just had too many other things going on. Enjoy trying different brew styles. People get really creative. I'm planning on going to this years GABF.f

I got a cider in BWW in Twin Falls that was a pear cider. It was really good. But I can't remember the name of it.

Stromgbow makes a good cider. I've had a half guinesss half strongbow amd it was really good.

"Blue Paddle" Pilsner by New Belgium Brewery
A nice clean initial drink, but hardly any hop flavors coming through. The finish is sharp. Not one of this brewery's better offerings, but better than most mass-produced American pilsners.
Overall Score: 7

Terrapins "Boomshakalager" --- Bavarian Lager. One of Terrapins side projects (#11)It was pretty good, nice hop spice, malty finish. Amber colored but fresh tasting..
Score---7

Since I started going to the roller derby I have discovered the best beer in ages. It's called Hopalicious:
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/13837/30679
-
Everything tastes better at the roller derby. :lmao:
What's the price?
-
$10 in advance/$12 at the door for the games
$6.50 for the beer
I forget if you are in the Madison area but we should put together a group sometime. The season is over. There might be a game in July but the season starts again in December.

Havent read all the previous posts/pages but Grimbergen Double Abbey Ale a dark Belgian beer is undoubtedly my favorite beer with La Trappe Trappist Ale decidedly being my second fav.
As I understand it Grimbergen is one of the few surviving abbeys to have been established by the founder of an order, in this instance St Norbert (1080-1134). The Grimbergen Double has undergone two fermentations, which gives this ale a chocolatey, toffee taste with a warming brandy-like finish.
Some abbeys have beers called Single, Double and Triple, to indicate an ascending order of alcohol content. Typically, the single is served to the brothers with their meals, and is often unavailable outside the abbey. The Double and Triple may be served in the abbey on religious holidays, but are likely to be primarily sold outside. The prime role of all abbey and Trappist beers is to raise money for the maintenance of the communities and their work.
Grimbergen's range includes a dark double (in Flemish, Dubbel) and a golden Triple (in Flemish, Tripel). The Double has an alcohol content of 5.2 per cent by weight, 6.5 by volume. It has a Burgundy color, a raisiny aroma; an orangey, toffeeish palate; and a cinnamon-like, spicy, brandyish, finish.
I pay about $26 per 6 pack for the Grimbergen Double and about $5 a piece for the Trappist Ale here in the US when I can find them.
Needless to say I have little use for American beers, except to be 'sociable' as they say. And, well of course they are cheap.
:)

I'll have to try those. They sound tasty. As far as American beers, I try to stay away from the mainstream mega brewers(Bud, Miller, Yeungling, et al) and stick to the craft beers. There are some really good ones out there. Trying them is half the fun. Everywhere I visit I'll try the local brewery if there is one.

Do you get Lazy Magnolia Beers where you are? It's brewed in the Kill. Their Southern Pecan Nut Brown ale is awesome.
Sam Adams has a deconstructed IPA 12 pack on limited release right now. Two in the 12 are an IPA and the others are an IPA with only one type of hop. It's been very interesting to taste the difference.

Well's Bombadier Ale
Simply one of the flagships of English brown ales, IMO.
Overall Rating: 9

If you're ever around Texas, these are pretty good:

The Shiner Black especially has a nice kick, and you never get a headache or a hangover from any of their beers. They taste like BEER, kind of like Samuel Adams, not that lite garbage. If you're ever around Shiner, TX, tour the brewery and drink free. :cheersmate:

I haven't seen Lazy Magnolia around here. Doesn't mean its not here, just I haven't seen it. I'll have to go on a wild beer hunt for the Sam Adams......
I like the Shiner Commemorator. Not thrilled with the black.
Lots of good choices. I need to make a Taco Mac run to see if any of these are there.....

I discovered a new beer this weekend also by Ale Asylum who also makes my roller derby favorite, Hopalcious.
This one is called Contortor Porter and when I first tried it, I thought, it has a hint of chocolate. Then I read the label:
http://aleasylum.com/aboutus-info/brewerybeers/contorter-porter/]Our porter is dark in color yet soft on the palate. English chocolate malts give it a complex, rich flavor wrapped in a silky smooth finish.
Contorter Porter is available year round in six packs and on tap throughout the Madison and Milwaukee regions. (http://)
simulated label from website
Because of the unique flavor, I could imagine being over it very quickly if I drank it too often, but I think as an every-so-often this could be a nice change of pace.

Hacker-Pschorr "Oktoberfest" Marzen
Nice clean drink that's typical German Marzen in color and body. Clean finish with those profound hop notes. Excellent beer.

I will keep my eyes peeled for that OH.
I had a new Unibroue last night that has become a favorite. Ephemere. Tastes like a mix between Champagne and Cider, but much more clean and sharp. Very Green Apple, but with the Belgian kick.

I bought two more 6-packs of it today. :cheers1:

Lagunitas IPA.
OMG I found a new fave.
This beer is one of the best IPA's I've ever had. The blend of hops is really outstanding. Mouth feel is also one of the best, being very, very smooth.
I've heard about this beer, but never bought it before. GET SOME.

Me Too. Have I mentioned Saint Arnold's Lawnmower before? I know it is a Kolsch, but it is super hoppy. You might like it.
-
I've never tried an IPA but I bought some Snake Dog India Pale Ale last night. $9.99 for a six pack. Kinda pricey, but I think those were inflated liquor store prices. The first mouthful is almost spicy and very robust. The rest of the bottle is similar. It has a very hearty flavor, almost like a dinner of pot roast and mashed potatoes with gravy.
Out of five, I'd give it about a 4. Tasty but definitely not something I would drink every day. More of a holiday beer that you would bring as a gift. It beats the hell out of Heineken.

If you guys like to indulge in an ale now & then you might like Genesee Cream Ale, "Genny Cream".
It's no high phalootin' micro brew, more of a girl next door sort of brew but not bad at all really and a six pack of 16 oz pounders is $5. Goes well with food like Buffalo chicken wings.

I haven't had any of that since I was at the S8G plant in Ballston Spa.

I bought some of that once because it was dirt cheap.
I got what I paid for.

I found a solution to that problem. Buy a six pack of decent tasting beer, then a bunch of the cheap stuff. After the six pack, you don't care too much what the cheap beer tastes like. :cheersmate:

I have a dream there'll come a day when all these hotshots'll stop actin' like they're too good for McRibs, cold ones, and rock n roll, you guys.

Anybody tried the Bud Light Platinum yet?
-
No on the Bud Lights. I've decide to make Lone Star the official beer of my outdoor recreations.

Which guys? Have a keg of Red Seal IPA on tap right now. I ain't drinking Bud, gives me a headache. If I don't have much of a choice I will go for Miller Lite, or Shiner. Never had a McRib, I like BBQ too much, but give me a Tabasco slim jim and some pork rinds and I am good!

Hi5 for the K-Money quote.
Feel like I could drink a million beers right now.
