Title: BadCat....question about guitars.
Post by: BEG on December 10, 2009, 02:06:40 PM
I thought I would ask you since you seem to be an expert in guitars.  My son wants to start playing guitar and wants to buy a used electric guitar and amp.  He wants something he can grow into and wants to buy used.  Do you have any suggestions on what guitar would be good for him?

Fender stratacaster.. Easy to finger and hard to develop bad habits on like over pressure.   Can be found in some stores that specialize in used instruments. Stereo or some am fm components have aux jacks that can be used as an amp.

He'll say, "Gibson Les Pauls and BadCat amps".  :-)

Guitar Center is having some really good deals right now. I learned (taught myself) on an acoustic 12 string. I later bought pickups for it to go to an amp. I found that after learning on a 12 string, electric guitars were WAY easy.

Yes, of course I would say a Gibson Les Paul and a BadCat amp, however, since he is not a professional musician, that would be overkill.

You don't have to go used to get fairly decent for a good price.  Check out the Epiphone line of "Les Paul" guitars, they have them at Guitar Denter and they're available from all the online music stores.  The Fender mexican made guitars aren't too bad either.  If he wants to try to play something more aggressive, Ibanez makes some decent guitars for under $300.

Mind you, none of these are pro quality, but they are garage band / beginner / do I really want to learn to play this quality.

As for amps, I wouldn't go used there either.  Vox has the AC4TV all tube amp that is small, portable and has variant wattage for playing semi-quietly.  Problem with it is...it never gets REALLY loud either.  The Vox Valvetronix comes in a 15 watt package and will get quite loud.  It also has build in effects and different amp models.

So, my recommendation to you would be....

You can get some really good deals on used Ibanez and Jacksons, but make sure the Jackson is an earlier model.  They were bought out by Fender  in '02 and there is argument over the quality of the new models.

I wouldn't recommend anything other than a Marshall amp.  You can also get a decent priced used one at most music store chains.

I always say, if you are a beginner and/or don't have a ton of money, go used & quality over new & cheap.

I HATE the Marshall MG series...they are total pieces of junk.  A nice older all tube Marshall on the other hand, is almost heaven.  Unfortunately, you don't often find these at very good prices.

I once had a Peavey Classic 2-12 Amp. I just loved that thing. It was a very versatile little amp.
