There are grim movies, and then there are movies that should list the Grim Reaper in the credits. No Country for Old Men, the 2007 Oscar-winning drama, falls into the latter category, but it's as cuddly as a hamster compared with The Road, the latest adaptation of a Cormac McCarthy novel. The Road is set in a post-apocalyptic world where everything and almost everyone is dead. There are no trees, no grass, no sun, no food, and, worst of all, no booze to take the edge off. The few survivors are sometimes driven to devouring each other. Our two protagonists are tired, gaunt, and nameless: Man (Viggo Mortensen) and Boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who spend the movie navigating through these various hazards on their long journey to ... where? I'm tempted to say it beats the hell out of me, but that may be the answer.
The Road seems to suggest that mankind is on a dreary march to endless pain, and after sitting through this season's Oscar contenders, I can relate. This has always been the time when the studios drag out their heavy films for award "consideration." But in the last few years they've been getting uncomfortably weighty. There's even a movie called A Serious Man—I had to get up and leave in the middle, it's so depressing—and it's a comedy.
You can blame Hollywood's doom and gloom on the Oscars, but I'm not going to. Instead, I think it's George W. Bush's fault. ....

So now Bush is to blame for Hollywood's dreary output?

I blame Hollyweird for putting out crap movies, and for using the Oscars to to showcase their left leaning politics.

George Bush is making movies now?
No wonder Newsweek is tanking. Idiots like that shouldn't be paid for writing.

At least he didn't figure out who's really behind this conspiracy.
Karl Rove, you glorious, magnificent bastard!

Who invests in movies like this? Is there some sort of producers like tax deal you get for making really rotten movies that do very very badly?
There must be a reason that movies like "Heavens Gate" "Its Pat" and "The Road" get made.

That was the plot device in The Producers. There's an opportunity for a big tax write off.

After going to the source, I still can't really tell if the Bush reference was intended to jab at the grossly-overused Obamite excuse, or if it was sincere. Maybe a mixture of both, with a confused bit of writing trying to masquerade as nuance.
Well, no matter. I'm not gonna drop ten bucks to watch some big downer, I've got at least a dozen SF books in my library with equally drastic apocalyptica in them, but better lasting entertainment value and mostly with good endings.

I've noticed that most big money makers get panned by the well known critics. At the same time most Oscar winners aren't big money makers either.

I've noticed alot of Oscar winners aren't worth the price you paid for popcorn.

About a 90% correspondence between "Movies that suck" and "Oscar nominee" or "Critically acclaimed" for about the last 10 years, if you ask me.
