Post by: bkg on December 06, 2009, 09:43:08 PM
This Mike Holmes guy impresses the hell out of me. I wonder if I can get him to come South to MN to look at my house..  :rotf:

He's good.  The trick is to find an honest inspector.  Norm Abram published a book about a house he contracted/built for his family about 10-15 years ago... once you get past the architectural/builder minutiae, it's full of inside goodness on what to look for in a house.

Again, its all who and what you know.  When I worked as a cook, many of my friends at the time were in the construction and remodeling business.  It was enlightening.

Agree completely about Holmes.

I've caught many of his shows and it's appalling as to the kind of crap that some builders get away with.

I've often wondered, though...Who pays for Holmes' work? The homeowner? That doesn't seem likely since they've already forked over tens of thousands to the crook that messed up the house to begin with. The TV station? (Who is that? Discovery?) That gets to be pretty pricey when they're putting $50K or $60K back into the house after demo.

And Holmes goes with only quality stuff -- he probably doesn't get his lumber from Home Depot!  :rotf:

Home Depot is all over Holme's shows, so I suspect he does use them. But HD Canukia might be different in the USSA.

I suspect that the repairs are paid for out of the Holmes Foundation.

Thank you for that information. He does indeed have a foundation and from the looks of it, that's exactly what is paying for some of these projects that he does in Canada.

He's done a couple of programs that were here in the States. I suppose he got another sponsor to pay for those...

As to Home Depot lumber, he probably has a guy cherry-picking it!

You have to cherry pick the lumber no matter where you buy it.  I sent some back from my last project.  New deck.
