Title: It's going to be cold
Post by: franksolich on December 06, 2009, 05:29:35 PM
I just checked the weather forecast, for the Sandhills of Nebraska, through this whole week.

Damn.

Beginning Wednesday, temperatures in the single digits.....and with wind.

Today, Monday, Tuesday, and part of Wednesday, light snow.

And from the other half of Wednesday through Saturday, sunny.

But those single digit temperatures.....

And the wind.....

I think beginning Wednesday, I'm just going to hunker down inside, hoping that all the cats are inside too.

We're getting a bit of cool weather here as well.  In the 30's over night, 40's and low 50's during the day.  Not as cold as Nebraska, but still pretty cool   We've gotten some rain lately as well, with more forecast for the rest of the week.

Bit cool...I'll stick your ass in a snowbank...you'll THINK cool then.

Our HIGHS will be lucky to crack 30 by the end of the week.

We're supposed to hit the low teens Thursday, and not get past the high 30's for the next 10 days. I hate the cold, but would rather skip the snow altogether.

The temperature gets down to near-freezing at night now.  It's only going to get worse from here on out.  Currently 36° now with a low of 33°.  I'm not looking forward to falling and busting my ass on some ice-covered concrete.  It seems to happen at least once a year and the older I get, the less I enjoy it.

About the same here at night, but we usually still hit at least 60 during the day.

I'll burn a tree for you.  Got 1/4 cord and a box of Duraflame logs sitting in the basement just for the hell of it, ready to use.  Don't really need them to heat the house, but it does make the living room nice and cozy on nights like last night.

Was 25 when I left for work at 6 PM.  Probably not going to get too much colder (dewpoint is at 21) but when you consider how nice it was Friday...bleah.

We can have indoor fires but can't have outdoor fires.

I moved my electric radiators out of the closet last week... they're less than half the cost of the gas heat I was using.  They're good for large rooms.  Nice and toasty in here now.

Don't pout--for some folks up here, it's the only way they can afford to heat their home, with heating oil STILL upwards of $2.50/gallon.

Electric radiators are on my list of things to buy.  I am too damn cheap to heat the whole house just so I can be comfortable in one or two rooms.

Wal Mart, $50 for the oil-filled Honeywell heaters (black radiator-style units -- I don't care for the open-element type).

I have a two-room apartment and bought one for each room.  Definitely cheaper than the $100/month I spent during the winter for gas heat and they're just as warm.  Gas is expensive!

Even so, it's not wise where I'm at to just let half the house freeze (water pipes, dontcha know.)  However, I drop the programmable thermostat to 55 when I'm either supposed to be sleeping or at work, and then only up to 68-70 for an hour before I head to work and a few hours in the evenings.

So far it seems to be doing the trick.  I've used less than a half-tank of oil since I turned on the heater at the end of September.  At this rate I might be able to go another 5-6 weeks before I fill up--yay!

ETA: Just for the hell of it I looked at the map.  Hope you folks in the Rockies are ready for this next round.  And jeebus...-40F in West Yellowstone already???  WTF???

Wow.  I'm pretty sure I was still running my A/C in September.  I sure wasn't worried about cold weather.

I do not want to move up north.  Anything north of Kentucky is too far.

I have ONE window unit in my bedroom that I finally broke down and bought this last summer.  I pulled it out Labor Day weekend.

I agree with you on heating what you use. I don't heat my upstairs at all - it's pretty open, though, so a lot of the heat from the main floor goes right up the stairway. It's just storage for me, really.

But I'm not sure about the electric radiators. Has their efficiency improved in the last 15 years (asking out of ignorance)?

When I was renting before I bought my house, the heat went out and the landlord dropped off a 1500-watt unit.  Kept a small 2-br apartment fairly warm, but I'm glad I didn't have those electric bills.  And I'm sure they wouldn't heat a very large area in a REAL winter.

For most of my needs I use an Eden Pure electric space heater, it's like a little furnace. There is no natural gas here, so it's all LP for the furnace, which I have only ran once for a couple hours so far this season. Even when it's cold outsdie, the electric heat costs me just about $3 a day, most days I spend alot less as it only runs a few hours at night. I bought mine off eBay, using a windows live search rebate and ebay coupon. I saved over $125 compared to the buy it now price.

On a related note, it dropped to about 50 degrees and we just finished a thunderstorm!

$3 a day is if the thing runs all day, so far this year it never has.   :evillaugh:  It gets down to 20 at night. Yes, in colder climates it might not keep up or cost a small fortune to run. But the manufactuer still claims $3 a day.

I have not always lived in Nevada & I know what sub zero temps are all about.

The good news is that my little community within the city has an electric co-op, I pay the same every month for utilities. Not bad when it's 117 outside and I have two central air untis running 24/7. Plus electricty here is not taxed to death either. In fact either is my cell phone bill or other utilities.

Here in northern Alabama, the last two mornings it's been in the 20's and only warmed up to a high of 47.  Got a face cord of wood split and stored in the garage so I don't have to go out at all, and don't.  For here it got awfully cold awfully quick in the year, and saturday AM we had snow.  Talked to my sister back home in Michigan - she's had no snow yet, damn, maybe I should move back there.......not.  I'll stay here and just throw another log on the fire and keep the electric heat on 68.

My boyfriend has a pretty small house, over 50 years old, and it had crap for insulation last year.  We insulated it this year, so it should be less drafty, but he had a new space heater he used in the living room, during the day, and in the bedroom at night, and it kept things manageable, without using up his gas for heat.  My house is a little newer than his, and it is my first year in it.  Quite drafty.  For keeping one room warm, the new ones seem to do quite well.  Currently, I just have every blanket on the bed, and close my bedroom door, to lock in the heat from the furnace.  Since I have pier and beam, I do need to keep it on for a little while.  We had a hard freeze, and some buddies of mine got their pipes froze already this year.  This I do not want.  Paying more on a gas bill is better than having to replace pipes.

Just had Ferrell gas fill the propane tank. We were down to 20% and it took 300 gallons to fill it. Cost me $400.

I'll go through at least 3 fillups this winter, usually about 6 weeks or so apart. The last fillup should be in late March, early April. Then it'll take until late November or early December to use that one tank. Water heater, stovetop, and standby generator all sip on the gas as well as the furnace.

We have a pretty big house with a lot of windows on the SE corner. Two-stage furnace and we don't turn the basement thermostat on at all. The master BR and the bird's room need electric space heaters, but in lieu of the space heater in the master BR, we use a humidifier.

You'd think that would help my sinuses, but nope.  :banghead:

I am currently in Council Bluffs Iowa where it is 8 F'n degrees ..up from 5 an hour ago.

There is snow on the ground with ice under it.

It took us almost 6 hours for a 2.5 hour trip.....it was almost a "white-out" when we left Grand Island. We saw at least 30 cars in ditches or wrecked. Guy went flying by me in a pickup...bout a mile later he was smashed up against the median retaining wall....in my lane. I went around him. Hated to do that ...but I was too afraid to stop. We came off onto an exit in Omaha that was sort of in a C shape....came around the curve to another car in the retaining wall and a car stopped to check on them...the whole thing was blocked...it was the second car sliding that allowed us to get around.....there was a bunch of "oh shit!" being yelled in our car!!!!

We're going to try to make it to Nashville today...depending on the weather. As Frank said...there's bad stuff coming in here late today. The schools here (Omaha) have already been cancelled for tomorrow.

So at least now I have an idea of what I'm in store for Wednesday.

And yeah, this is the time of year I really hate--warm enough that when the storm starts, it melts and makes a nice sheen, then the temperature drops and it all freezes, turning the roads into skate rinks.  All 4WD means is it increases the number of tires that are spinning as you slide out of control.

finally got to Nashville and into our room about 30 minutes ago.....as in 4:30am.

We had reserved a room here that could not be cancelled.....so had to drive all the way here......or lose the 90 bucks.

Son talked to girlfriend a while ago....she said it was getting bad out in Nebraska.....weather channel has it looking nasty all over the place.

To all those in the path of the storm...please be careful...........

Why are you staying in a motel in Nashville?  Isn't that within walking distance of home?

I have no idea any more what it's like down south, where you were a couple of days ago.  The last I heard, the southern half of Nebraska is a disaster zone, much worse than up here.....but now up here, I'm hearing we're as bad as southern Nebraska had been.....and that southern Nebraska is even worse now.

The Weather Channels online alerts say we are going to get hammered with 9-14 inches with 40-45 MPH winds to follow. Think I will stay home again tomorrow as it is a 30 mile drive to where I work in Omaha and they will be lucky to get anyone in to work before 9 am as it is. The local channels on DirectTV are out here so we have only the internet and local radio for local news.

I worked at home today in part because of the weather and because I had to take my tractor's snow blade in for some service work. Long story.

But I have customer meetings tomorrow, so that means I get to brave the roads. Might just take the truck and leave the car in the garage.

We were not quite 3 hours from home....

We didn't want to drive as far, but the hotel wouldn't refund my money.

I know I sound like a DUmmie whining.... I had to pay for the room up front because it was near Opryland I guess. I knew it was non-refundable but since we were leaving GI late Sunday afternoon, spending the night and expecting to be in Omaha by 7 or 8, and leaving for Nashville by 9 on Monday morning ....no problem with paying ahead. We didn't expect it to take 6 hours of driving in a blizzard with bad road conditions on Monday morning.

I called the hotel in Nashville ...the Best Western at Opryland....explained the weather conditions and asked if they could please TRANSFER our reservation to a Best Western in St Louis....they said no. We agreed to the non-refundable and that was that. I wasn't even asking for my money back!

So when we stopped just east of St Louis in Illinois to eat something...we made the decision to drive on. Margot had slept some, so she drove from where we hooked onto I 24 to Nashville. We went and picked up my car, then went to the Best Western.

Will continue this later....going to Mass to thank God for all my blessings.....

Got out of work at 5 to beat the storm home.  Had I not stopped for breakfast, I would have, but it started while I was eating my pancakes and meat lover's omelet at 6 this morning.  Barely dusted the driveway when I got home, so I said to hell with it and went to bed.  Got up about an hour ago and am waiting for it to stop blowing SIDEWAYS so I can shovel and blow out the driveway before it turns into rain, which will turn my driveway into a block of ice.

Only have one bag of driveway melt and one bag of sand.  :censored:
