The Staff in the hospital might be a sales rep for a drug company..
Advertisements [?]I was in the hospital recently as in last week..I was railroaded in, by a staff that didn't know my treatment plan. It was hell for a week. And I got alot to tell..This group I attended everyday while I was there patrticularly bugged me alot...Everyday I was given a sales pitch..

One day it was for ****ing invega..We were being given a infomercial on the unit, by staff....There, much to my shocked revulsion, it seems things had changed in the 15 years since I was in the hospital the the last time..The hospital staff was actually promoting big pharma's new pills in the guise of "mental health education". And apparently this shit has been going on for a while.. Please pass me a barf bag..And I bet that bag will be advertising some happy pills on it too.

http://carlatpsychiatry.blogspot.com/2007/08/art-of-pre...

The staff member giving us the pitch was a licensed clinical social worker.. "teaching" this "class" on "mental health education". He was open about how he meets with the pharma reps from time to time, and he told us how they buy him a nice dinner and tell him about new drugs and he gets all their perks .
After he meets with these slime balls in suits,he comes into the ward and "teaches" the patients , some manic, depressed, suicidal, hearing voices, all are generally are suffering, and all are captive audiences required to "go to groups" and scheduled activities because that is the so called "therapy" part of being stuck in the hospital. And for"therapy" we hear about all the "wonderful, safe, and effective, almost effortless "new" drugs.
Everyday it was a new disorder and there was a drug we had to be told was there to fix it.
WTF??!!

As he sweet talked us up with promises of happiness that can only be had in a capsule a day of course ..I smelt a LOT of bullshit. And yes he called all the drugs by brand NAME, repeating it louder than he was the other words he was saying ,just like a trained seal, performing and appearing to believe in the sales pitches as TRUTH from pharma reps as if it is actually unbiased information. I sat there dumbfounded by all this.

After this vomitile sales pitch I witnessed..Suddenly several other patients announced in this "education group" they wanted to be put on that drug..what was it?? vega? Inveg,?? ASAP.

In the book "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell -- who is an author well-read by the pharmaceutical industry -- the author talks of the tipping point as the "moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point" when an idea, fashion, or product takes off.

First, you have to identify the equivalent to "high prescribers" among patients. These people would fit Gladwell's profile of Mavens: their motivation is to educate and help.

....focus on the true customers among consumers -- the patients who are taking the drugs..
http://pharmamkting.blogspot.com/2006/08/precision-buzz...

**** THE damn Marketers Arrgh! they are invading everything..

Disturbingly,I observed no questions arose from any of the patients in there with me .No questions about potential drug interactions, toxicity, nasty side effects, how it works, what is it made of, how it was tested, or anything like that. Nor was it brought up by our"teacher"/staff/sales rep. They wanted to TRY it and they didn't care if it would be useful to them or not or interact with any health problem or other drugs they may be on... It bothered me how the other patients were so easily convinced in order to get better it means one has to be eager to ingest all the pills the"professionals" recommend at the appointed times .. FOREVER .. And that staff pitched it all to us like that ****ing pill was THE solution to every emotional problem..

It was a particularly sickening kind of predatory marketing method. And it showed me to never trust anything that is called "mental health education" as ANYTHING but a lot of Marketing Propaganda..

It all just got me so inwardly sad, pissed off and disgusted..I wondered how many more psych hospital staff out there are now being wined and dined into being degreed drug pushers for the pharmaceutical companies? So now it is the psych staff working in the units, being the smarmy salesmen. And as if NAMI'S cozy drug rep relations wasn't bad enough for psych survivors to navigate bullshit from useful information.. For NAMI to pose as "consumer advocates"..Yeah advocates my ass....Ugh!......It's all so insidiously disgusting.

Is that all psych hospitalization is good for now?.. A place to be marketing,to a captive audience?? Pretending as if it was therapeutic for us to be manipulated into taking even MORE drugs in psych wards than you already take?? ****ing EXPENSIVE drugs? Is this what medicaid money is paying for? **** this shit.

How disgusting can it be,??? Find out..

http://www.mindhacks.com/blog/2007/05/treating_children...

I am serious as a heart attack..Some of these "wonderful drugs" are ****ing dangerous.Take them if it helps you, but dammit BE AWARE of what ALL the RISKS are!!! Do NOT just TRUST the "professionals" or "helpful staff" as if they have your interest at heart because they may have been targeted and already bought into the "buzz".

.......

I haven't written about my fun day I had with an Invega drug rep sales guy. I was in the psychiatrist's waiting room, and there he was, all shiny in his suit, his badge on and his big ass suitcase full of Pharma freebies. I walk in and stop in my tracks. Oh, a Pharma rep, right here in person I look into the counter area and see he has already handed over enormous latte'style coffee mugs that are bright orange with INVEGA on it. Loaded like candy inside were lovely Invega samples. Damn it looked good, like a party favor, or a teacher's gift resembling one's I've received, only those were filled with Hershey kisses. Not Invega, the dollar store version of Risperdal.
http://bipolarsoupkitchen-stephany.blogspot.com/2007/11...

And for a tidbit of irony..
Janssen’s marketing team apparently missed the fact that the word in the English language that sounds most like “Invega” is “inveigle,” meaning “to entice, lure, or ensnare by flattery or artful talk or inducements”
http://www.thecarlatreport.com/index.asp?page=wp3152007...

"Invega" marketing team = FAIL!!

So it was committed for a week and encouraged to take Invega?

Quote
Paliperidone (trade name INVEGA) is an atypical antipsychotic developed by Janssen Pharmaceutica. Invega is an extended release formulation of paliperidone that uses the OROS extended release system to allow for once-daily dosing.

Paliperidone is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain.

Paliperidone is used to treat schizophrenia.

Paliperidone may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Sounds to me like she/he/it needs it. Oh I think those of us paying the bill (taxpayer funded Medicare) should have a say. Drug it's ass until it behaves. This one is a sad and dangerous case and needs to be committed and treated.

LMAO at the DU Adbot!

And does she/he/it really think that the patients are going to be asking the sorts of questions she mentioned? Um...hello??? Mental patients???? Besides, I think her story is B.S. I think what happened is that she was "forced" to participate in some of kind of group therapy and they discussed ways of managing your illness. One of which involves medication. These "staff" are folks that deal with this on a daily basis and know what meds work. It only makes sense that they would suggest such things. Ball gags and straightjackets are only pleasant for the rest of us :-)

I should know by now that nothing out of she/he/its mouth is reliable.

For a psycho she sure is long winded. You would think that if there were a drug available to help her deal with her illness she would at least be willing to try it. If it doesn't work try something else.

I'm of the mind what we are seeing here is UGP's resistence to getting better. It's really quite sad. Nothing terrible happened in her week there, she just...again I'm thinking...did not want the underlying mental illness she has treated. Very very sad. What a wasted life and for something that at least can be managed on some level...perhaps enough to sooth the projection at others and the self-mutilation.

you nailed it! What would she bitch about if she got better? And getting treatment would mean confronting all of her demons and admitting that the entire world is not in a conspiracy to get rid of you or mistreat you. Sad. We have an aunt who is bi-polar and refuses treatment. Fortunately, she knows she's still a human being and is just really hard to be around.

No. :-)

We love our (bi-polar nutjob) aunt who basically put our grandmother in the ground with her insanity. BUT....I'd be lying if I said we all wished she were not around too. My dad is getting major brownie points for allowing her to continue to reside in the house he inherited from their mother. It's actually quite eery when I think about my aunt and UP. Granted my aunt does not suffer from the same illnesses, but the attitudes are alike in many ways. The persecution, paranoia about meds and doctors, etc...

Whenever my dad threatens to have her locked up or put out, she suddendly gets a little better and drops all of the paranoid accusations and outrageous demands that drove my grandmother to her death. That's when I wish SHE would reach room temperature because she robbed my grandmother of so much. Sorry, I'm getting off topic and making this a personal rant.....

That to a degree describes all the DUmmies, they are only happy when living in their self absorbed world that has in their minds screwed them.

I have heard it said that the most insane people in this world believe themselves to be normal.  Maybe that is why this walking ad for forced lobotomies is still a walking ad.

Well, I stand by what I suggested earlier (although where I suggested it escapes the memory).

I'm sure the sidewalks and streets of Baltimore could use some picking-up of litter.

I think the subway cat should don an orange vest, get in the back of a truck with others, and foray out to pick up litter, eight hours a day, five days a week, as "re-payment" for some of the social services she gets.

That's the best way to good mental health--a job.

I think Blackie the Ghost Chicken and the mystical panthers at panther mountain have all told her that she is perfectly sane.

I was in the hospital recently as in last week..I was railroaded in by animal control after they caught me rummaging through a dumpster behind PetSmart. The staff didn't quite know what to make of me and kept me heavily sedated for two days. When I finally regained consciousness  I found they had neutered me.

I feel so much more like myself now.
I can't wait to go back.

fixed...

Well yes, but have you BEEN to Baltimore? UP would be a walking target for some thug. It would end up dead in the harbor in less than 24 hours.

It was some years ago, and might have changed since then.

Baltimore's one of these places with a corrupt Republican machine running it, right?

Oh.

Yes she is lurk to a spectacular degree sadly. She actually has been not only failed by her parents but by her doctors as well. Its hard to feel compassion for someone who is so narcississtic that you want nothing to do with them, which UGP is.
