Boy... that didn't take long...
It used to take me 3-4 hours to read through 5-7 pages of posts. This morning it only took about 20 minutes. Where are all the sharp, intelligent, rational, thoughtful old posters I used to see around here. As far as I can tell there are only a few of you left. Most of what I'm seeing lately are conspiracy theorists, tin foil hatters, knee-jerkers, shoot-from-the-hippers and drudge devotees. Jeezus.

1. Hmmm... now who do you suppose would give me an unrec?
I didn't point a finger at anyone.

2. I didn 't but I'm thinking of doing so
your op is simply another in the heaping pile of whines that clutter DU. That's why I'd unrec it.

3. don't take the unrec personally. Seems there are a few doing that to every new thread
Been watching and it doesn't matter what OP is about, some clown with a hair trigger hits unrec immediately after something is posted.
And yeah, a lot of old times have stopped posting here since the two year olds invaded.

10. The rec-un/rec thing has ruined this place for me
It was much better when actual comments "made" the threads.. not just knee-jerk drive-bys
I wonder how many people really care what's on the "greatest"pageon earth, forever and ever amen, doubleplussgood

6. the invasion is PR shills who try to make their assigned opinions look more popular by...starting a lot of threads with little content.

7. They do draw a crowd tho, don't they? I recall a time when high-posters were considered valuable contributors to DU. No so much anymore.

11. I agree with you.
A close friend of mine was a regular and very active poster here. She got fed up with the place and quit it a few months ago. I used to look over her shoulder, so to speak (I had her password, so I could see what she posted and who responded), and it was disheartening to watch the discourse deteriorate. It was as if all the smart people fled.
I recommended to her that "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" had, perhaps, taken place at DU.
So I got my own account, and, like you, I've been looking over the place every day. It was once a great source of news, a very good starting point for current events. But, that seems to have ended now. I don't find very many things that even inspire me to respond. That's not to say that I haven't encountered some smart and informed and thoughtful people here, because I have.
But I've also encountered some jerks, too.
It's not the place it used to be when I was just a shoulder-peeper, that's for sure. My friend still checks in, but not very often, and I've assured her that she's not missing a thing. I promised to send her links to anything I thought she'd find interesting, but, so far, that hasn't happened.
I don't understand the "Unrecommend" feature at all. It strikes me as a simply stupid feature, designed to let the cowards do damage anonymously, without contributing a damn thing. I just Recommended your post, lamp_shade, because you said what I've been experiencing. It looks like the whole place needs a good cleaning, but I honestly don't have the slightest idea of how to do that, except that I'd ditch the "Unrecommend" thing. It's worthless.
Still, I have hope, and I'm going to stick around a bit longer, in hopes that things will pick up, get smarter and more interesting, and maybe my old pal will even be lured into returning. We'll just have to see, I guess.

Well, DUmmy lamp_shade is, after all, a lunatic DUmmy, so he's probably serious, but this is one of the funniest comments at the DUmp in a long time. Any poster who is sharp, intelligent, rational, or thoughtful would have been tombstoned shortly after Jeb, Elian, and Lord Rove delivered Florida to us.

I can't believe how seriously these people take the stupid "rec/unrec" thing. You'd think they got paid or fined money for them.
