Title: Hoarding- A mental disorder?
Post by: SilverOrchid on November 30, 2009, 11:40:03 AM
I have been watching that A&E show "Hoarders" and the show claims that people who don't throw out trash or just clean, they are mentally ill and wasn't their fault. I am watching on that this girl called the cops on her own mother just because she cleaned her room. All these people are self-indugent, lazy, selfish slobs that choose living in filth rather having human contact.  :hammer: Wonder how many voted for Obama? Wonder how many are DUmmies?

Sorry, had to rant for a min.  :-)

Some friends were discussing this show the other night.  I've seen the promos, but I'm almost afraid to watch.  I'm not a neat freak, but the promos are downright scary.

Both my mother and my stepdad were certified hoarders. They couldn't throw ANYTHING away, even the science projects in the refrigerator.  :puke:

I think a great deal of that problem has to do with growing up in the Depression and probably also being depressed.

Somehow a bunch of junk lying around is supposed to make you feel less depressed.

I don't get it.

When my stepdad died and it was time to deal with the pile of stuff that was thinly disguised as a house and garage, I was actually thankful that the state took over the property.

They had to deal with cleaning out the mess.

I get it if they grew up during the Depression but some of these people are middle aged to twenties. I don't get it.  :mental:

I too, have been seeing the promos, so I watched an episode this morning, and it was sort of like watching a train wreck in slow motion........between this and "intervention" it is simply sad what passes for television entertainment these days.......

We were bored last night, and started to watch an episode of "The survival of the half-ton teenager"........ten minutes in, it was so gross that we nearly lost our last meal, and turned it (mercifully) off........

I watched 30 seconds of that.  Once I saw him trying to crawl onto a toilet, I switched the channel.  Ugh.

Pretty disgusting. Watched a couple of re-runs. Then saw the 3rd annual "Clean House: Messiest House in America" show. Mom and daughter lived in a house. Daughter had to be 21-22 and had never seen the basement because it was stacked to the ceiling. They were both rude and ungrateful...

Buddy's dad was a hoarder in some senses... but it was all tools and cool garage things, so I supported it.  :cheersmate: Well, until he passed away and we had to clean the 1500 sq foot shop.  :thatsright:

I have to deal with "horse hoarders" all the time. They usually have at least ten, sometimes dozens, of starving horses and no means to support them all.  We give them one chance to get it to together and provide for their animals; we'll provide the vet, the food, the meds, the time and the know-how IF they'll commit to caring for them. Never, not once, have they ever wanted to accept the responsibility. They always force the animals removal-whining about how we're "stealing their babies!"
F*** hoarders.

I accidentally turned on A & E...and I couldn't watch more than 10 minutes....A & E has the worst programs...Their "Intervention" show is also a trainwreck....I dont' see how they even get viewers....unless those viewers are complete sadists who enjoy watching people's pain.

I want to know how long the "so-and-so thinks s/he is part of a documentary on addiction" line is going to continue to work...

That has got to be so hard to deal with. Especially being a horse lover.

I've seen that with greyhounds. Some people are so caught up in rescuing the dogs that they get more dogs than they can handle. One couple had 16 greys the last time I saw them. That's way too many.

I don't think I could watch that Hoarders show. I lived through it. My ex was a hoarder. One room in the lower level was so full of old papers and miscellaneous junk that the door could barely be opened. I could never walk in the room, as every inch of carpet was covered in up to 4 feet of junk. There was a desk in there somewhere, but could barely see it. The rest of the lower level wasn't much better. The upstairs office was horrible. After I left I returned once---to see a pile of newspaper at least a foot high on the electric range. It was unbearable.

And this wasn't some DU type. He is a conservative, an MBA with all the coursework for a doctorate in business. It would bring back too many memories to see that Hoarding show.

Okay - so I just watched part of this show. They pulled 8K pounds of trash, feces, dead cats out of this ladies house. It was disgusting.

But even worse...  A 20-something couple raising three young kids in a house like this. I'm NOT a fan of CPS... but holy fawk.

She needs to be in a home. Against her will if necessary.

Yes it is. It is really about feeling secure. Eupher upthread mentioned people who grew up during the depression hoarding things. People {Americans especially} Feel a security in their "things" or sometimes food. I think it does come from some kind of trauma be it growing up extremely poor or growing up in an abusive household. Our "things" give us comfort and stability when there is chaos all around us. This particular "disorder" is also very similiar to OCD as well imo.

I can't watch this show. I tried, I really did. It's too disturbing and I simply don't get how someone can live that way. Mental illness indeed. So sad.

Damn! Beat me to it. In my defense though, it isn't just lying on the floor. It's all sorted into .50 cal. ammo cans by caliber, labeled, and stored on shelves in an orderly fashion. Besides, there's a big difference between 'hoarding' and 'stocking up on something useful that may be absolutely essential in the not-so-distant future'.
