So, what's everyone doing with their leftover bird?

I've eaten turkey for every meal both yesterday and today, even breakfast. Bill had oatmeal.

Tonight I made gravy from turkey stock added some savory and thyme, mashed up some taters and we had open-faced turkey sandwiches and finished off the cranberries.

We're down to just one good sized hunk of breast meat left. Will probably be gone by lunch tomorrow.

You know, I'm starting to like hippyhubby less and less.

Having oatmeal.  What an old grouch.

The guy's probably about as pleasant as a booger on the dining-room table.

1. Today, turkey sandwiches.

Tomorrow, salad with turkey chunks and Trader Joe's cranberry goat cheese.

The rest of it goes in the freezer for soups and casseroles down the line.

The bones have been boiled, the stock is cooling in quart containers.

3. Haven't made one yet

Had dinner at my brother's. My wife, who was working, thought she'd have a little turkey dinner herself, but grossly estimated the work involved (she doesn't really cook). So now she wants me to cook it tomorrow (Sunday). I really don't want to.

I was debating carving it up ahead of time and just cooking "pieces" - white breast, legs/things/wings, etc. It'd be quicker, and save the later carving hassle. Any thoughts?

4. I'd say go for cutting it up

Less work for you.

Typical primitive suggestion.

Here, the diet cola primitive's wife slaves away all day at work, and the diet cola primitive, who's been lounging around, isn't willing to discombobulate himself a little bit so as to make something nice for her.

8. Faster cooking time fo' sure

but I'm not sure about less work. I have a helluva time cutting up a whole fryer, can't imagine trying that on a turkey. But then that might be accounted for by the fact I could really use a good set of knives with a cleaver.

The vindictive primitive, who needs a hip transplant:

7. Soup. I'm trying to lose weight so I'll throw together the leftover turkey and a bunch of vegetables, some stock and seasoning, and live on it for a couple of days.

The bones have been boiled

Nothing goes to waste at the DUmp. Those bones will now be used to craft homemade Christmas gifts.

Are you talking about that quaint old tradition of taking the main bone of the turkey and turning it into a Santa's sleigh?

I've seen those.

With dummies, I think it goes further to the point of sticking a name tag on a turkey leg bone that has been boiled of its nutrients, and sucked until hollow and dry.

If you ever get your Powerball winnings, and bring grandma up to run the place, give us a shout and we'll teach her how to cut up a chicken without waste of time, effort or cleaving. I'd hate to see her ruin your brand new lottery purchased cleaver hacking away on chicken bones.

Did you blow right past this, Frank?

So not only does she not get a chest freezer from the old tightwad, she can't even get a decent set of knives out of him.  And all that work and creativity she puts forth in the kitchen!  Shame on him, him and his dumb oatmeal.

Ooooops, yeah, I did miss that.

Thanks madam for pointing it out.

Geeze Frank, it goes outside the bounds of civilized behavior to throw out the WISH BONE.

Back up one minute, are you saying that the turkey main bone can be turned into a piece of ART.?

That someone long ago saw what others didn't see.    Wow----this impresses me and gives me a new look out on the things we feel is dispensable.

No longer will I look at the leavings of a turkey or chicken and just toss them.

Please if you can find pictures of this tradition you speak of, send it to us.

BTW did you know there is a growing business in Poop.

We have companies that sell Moose Poop as jewelery.  Yup, any animal that poops little balls is up for this.

Some how these companies have people in the field looking for deer and moose poop, rabbit poop, anything that can be dried, sanitized and covered with a shiny glaze is sure to get the tourists interest.

Don't you just love it that this jewelery is often disguised as a gem of some sort.,  could be called Nebraska coal.  Or Great Plains living History. :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Oh my.

I wish I could do this more often, resurrecting golden threads, but I dare not.

As we know, shortly after this old thread, hippywife's cannibalistic husband Wild Bill obtained a full set of knives, scalpels, hackers, choppers, bone saws, and cleavers from a coroner's yard sale.

Shortly afterward, DUmmy hippywife disappeared into a stew pot.

To put this thread in its chronological time:

This was back (November 2009) when I was still admiring hippywife Mrs. Alfred Packer, saying nothing but nice things about her.

This was about three weeks before Tangerine LaBamba showed up here (December 17, 2009), spilling the beans about many primitives.  She spilled lots about Mrs. Alfred Packer, about how vile and disgusting she is, and so my former admiring attitude did a 180.

The hippywife primitive had to go, as she was a hindrance to the cooking and baking forum, but hippyhubby Wild Bill took care of it before any of us did anything, ordering her to quit hanging around with the primitives and pay more attention to him.

Despite what Judy grasswire says, franksolich had nothing to do with the sudden disappearance of Mrs. Alfred Packer; hippyhubby Wild Bill had everything to do with it.

Make Your Own Dinosaur out of Chicken Bones: Foolproof Instructions for Budding Paleontologists. Donated it to our local library/art gallery/museum where the local kids promptly manhandled it back into extinction. (http://members.socket.net/~mcruzan/avatars/banghead.gif)
