WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama plans to announce a redrawn battle plan for Afghanistan, including what the military says could be a roughly 50 percent increase in U.S. forces, in a national address Tuesday night from the U.S. Military Academy.
Although military and administration officials cautioned that Obama has not settled on a final figure, the military is planning for an increase of up to 35,000 troops begin next year. Military officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the president's plans.
The addition forces would come atop a record 71,000 U.S. troops in the country now and would represent the largest expansion since the war began eight years ago.
Obama will be speaking to a war-weary American public, with the Army's storied academy at West Point, N.Y., as a backdrop and cadets entering the service most stretched by two wars on hand. Polls show support for the war has dropped significantly since Obama took office, with a majority now saying both that they oppose the war and that it is not worth fighting.
Congressional Democrats may be an even tougher sell. The administration is deploying two Cabinet officials and the nation's highest-ranking military officer to explain the new Afghanistan plan in Capitol Hill hearings to begin Wednesday.
The president promised this week to "finish the job" begun eight years ago, and press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday the announcement would include an exit strategy. But the surge in troops would be Obama's second since taking office, and liberal Democrats already are lining up against it, in part because of the also-surging cost — up to $75 billion a year.

Just speculating but perhaps this has been his "plan" all along.
Dither without a directive so as the whole thing takes on an air of pointlessness then allow Congress to go Vietnam and defund it.
He doesn`t get the blame for surrender and will always campaign that it was Bush who "messed" it up.
Meanwhile men who have volunteered to defend this country have died while he has been playing a political game with their lives and service. :censored:

Hi,
As Steve Forbes said tonight on Greta's show the congress will use any excuse they can to raise taxes to support their domestic agenda and grow government. In the Kennedy administration the military was darn near 60% of the budget, now it is 17%...... What a telling figure that is.
Bo has dithered not because of concern for the troops or winning the war, but rather his entire decision is based on the political consequences.

Our hero, Lord Zero, the most merciful moron....
Piss be upon him....

IIRC, Benedict Arnold also betrayed the American army at West Point. A simple case of history repeating itself.

He gave the British the plans for the fortifications at West Point.

So we can look for Lord Zero to give specific troop deployments and movements in Afghanistan if history is going to repeat itself.

I'm so glad that we have a president who has to be on T.V. every time he signs something. :whatever: Honestly, why the hell will he be broadcasting his war plan to the entire world?

Because he has no clue what he is doing I think

God forbid the teleprompter breaks downs.

Benedict Arnold was also
A A leader with real military experience in the service of this country; and
B At one time, on the side of America
That puts him head and shoulders above Lord Ø.

OMG that is hilarious and sad at the same time.

I just hope in the next election America wakes up and gets him out of office.

That's the only "hope" that he has brought to the office.

Ya know what the worst part of the Obamessiah's speech is, if you've got little kids?
He's pre-empting A Charlie Brown Christmas on ABC. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :censored: :censored: :censored:

It's just too bad that the future ringknockers have too much self discipline to make evident what they think of this asshole using them as props to lend credibility to the utterly incredible. That might be fun to watch.

It's all he knows how to do. He sure as hell doesn't know how to LEAD.

That is for sure he is the biggest mistake I think this nation has seen since that goober Carter

Increase by 35K but out in 3 years according to the Ministry of Truth outlet, CNN. It's a recipe to give lip service to the field commander, secure failure, and minimize US casualties while failing. Oh yes, and then blame Bush, of course.
What sane Taliban commander or sympathizing chieftain or hetman isn't smart enough to see all they have to do is out-wait us, and not all that long?

I know this is probably a dumb observation.....but other than "photo op opportunities" for himself....why does this announcement need to be made at West Point.
3/4's of the students he will be addressing....have a minimum of 18 months left of school....they won't be shipping out in 2 or 3 or even 6 months.
If he had such a burning desire to talk in front of the military...why not go to an Army post or Marine base where they are the ones who are going in the next few months? A group of Marines from here just left Sunday, and an Army group left last week to go prep to leave in early spring.
Not only that....just how much is this announcement going to cost? and what was wrong with doing it from the Oval Office?
He can't honestly believe that West Point cadets....who are being trained on a daily basis for four years to lead men and women into combat and are willing to die for this country....are going to be overwhelmed by the priviledge of having him announce that he's continuing a war that should have been over years ago....if the damn liberals would have allowed it!
They are smart enough to have learned lessons from Vietnam....something that the liberals still haven't heeded.
-

Haven't finished reading your post yet. :-)
It's nothing more than a photo-opp. The damned "announcement" could have been done via a memo.
Oh. And because the West Point students are youngin's...

There isn't any reason for him to even do this speech/photo op since the major points have been leaked.

He's doing it there because it's an audience that is constitutionally madated to be respectful. The cadets are props/tools for his image. Nothing more.

Try Franklin Pierce, and you'd be closer.

Per Beck, the General requested 60k soldiers, with a minimum of 40k.
Obama is sending 30K... in the SUMMER OF 2010 (per fox news) :banghead:

Funny... the local CBS and Fox stations here are only showing the first 30 minutes. The other networks are showing the full hour.
Thank God for cable.
