Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill., has defeated Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., in Vermont's Democratic primary -- a win that was expected by both candidates and credited to the states sizeable population of liberal and Independent voters who have typically gone for the Illinois senator.
In Vermont, Obama beat Clinton among senior citizens as well as among white women, two of her core groups, according to preliminary exit poll results. His focus on "change" prevailed over "experience" by nearly a 40-point margin.

I'd always though that "independent" was what people in Vermont called socialists - I know that one of their national Senators is one. By their standards, Obama is really independent.
