Oh my.

The cyanide primitive.

It's a Wal-Mart-bashing bonfire, with a whopping 364 primitive comments thus far.

I don't have the luxury of standing on my principles by not shopping at Walmart...

Some people live on a tight budget. With the husband hurt from his job, my going to school to try to finish my education and a little boy at home we have to support, money is so tight that we have to pick and choose what we buy from week to week. My mother can give the guys haircuts for free. I on the other hand have to wait on having the money for a haircut before I can get one. I trust my mother to give the men here haircuts. That's it.

Anyway, in order to have decent holidays we're having to do two things. Carefully save our money without using the only credit card we have and scour the ads to find the sales. One of the black friday ads leaked out. It was a Walmart ad that advertised Magnavox blu-ray players for $78. I passed it on to a few other online friends who I knew would be interested. One of them went off on me like I had committed an atrocity for posting it.

I know a lot of folks don't like Walmart and there are a lot of good reasons to not shop there, but we don't have the luxury of standing on principle. There are some things that are cheaper at Walmart. Something things you can get cheaper at other stores as well...if one is careful.

It's just upsetting to be treated like I committed a crime because we do shop at Walmart sometimes.

Because of so many primitive comments, only the PoP are quoted here.

2. I just moved, money is tight, and I have shopped at Walmart a few times, too. Don't let anyone make you feel diminished; they're not walking in your shoes.

And P.S., another rumor has leaked. Target is supposed to be having small appliances on sale the day after Thanksgiving for muy cheapo.

158. There is no union grocery store for at least 100 miles from here. Likewise a Target or K-Mart.

I won't buy meat at Walmart because of what they did to their butchers. But they have the freshest produce in town. Most groceries and toiletries are enough cheaper there to make it seem like throwing money away if you buy it somewhere else.

One does what one has to do.

(My father was a union organizer, so don't come down on me about this.)

237. Our Wal-Mart doesn't seem to be like that.

I haven't talked to anyone who works there who doesn't like his/her job.

My cousin worked there for five years (until retirement).

38. I confess to going there for a few things

tea, dog food, mostly and don't fault anybody who has to go to stay above water, but for me personally...$78 for more consumer garbage vs. homemade baked goodies is no contest. I know a lot of people don't have time to do things like that, but sometimes I think all the toys are what are really killing us...

135. I've shopped there hundreds of times.

Never felt bad about it, even once. Nor did I feel like I was so far above any other Wal-Mart shopper as to publish an internet site showing overweight, shabbily dressed people or ugly cars and expect everyone to think that no Democrats could be found who look like that.

And for that matter, I hate how hypocritical people here can be sometimes. DU'ers do business every single day at places that don't provide medical insurance or collective bargaining to their employees, with nary a second thought.

Wal-Mart though? Oooooh, boogyman!

153. Aldi's, Craig's list, eBay, thrift stores, garage sales, Freecycle

I've been unemployed for most of the past year and I get by by shopping at places that are MUCH cheaper than Walmart. Don't buy the hype. They do NOT have the lowest prices out there. I've purchased books and CD's that were "used, like new" on Amazon for 0.01. Yes, there's $4-5 shipping, but Walmart can't compete even then. I've seen a Sony Bravia 52" TV on Craig's list for "$675.00 or best offer" because someone lost their job and was losing their home, too. Freecycle? It's FREE. Can't get cheaper than that. A little shopping around will slash your costs in half-and you'll be helping other Americans who, in many cases, really need just about anything they can get right now.

Walmart has done more to help the average American family than all of the government fiascos since FDR.

That is the main reason that the DUchebags hate it so much.

I could be wrong here but isn't 'loss-leader items' a misnomer?  Isn't it against the law for companies to sell below cost?

From what I read, it varies from state to state and is legal in most when done as part of promotional sales.

The only thing that bothers me about Walmart is the people that shop at the Walmart.  I go to a posh one in a posh neighborhood at 7am. (this one sells sushi, so it is posh)  NO ONE is in that Walmart at 7am on a Saturday.  I am there alone with the stockers.  No wait to check out.  That is the best time to go to the Walmart.

I used to work at ours as an overnight cashier....

You should see what comes in at 2:00am....

Right after the first of the month, welfare brood mares and queens, dressed in PJ's usually (the ones that bother to dress), with a buggy full of kids, a drunk husband/boyfriend/sperm donor, and another buggy full of frozen chicken strips, sodas, and junk food.  Near the end of the month, the same "crew" would be in for cigs and Ramen noodles.  I'm not talking a few packs of noodles, I'm talking a whole case....

Wednesday night would be the guys from a truck trailer factory coming in to cash their paychecks....

Always present is the goths and other circus sideshows milling about....

Friday and Saturday nights are the "normal" teenagers, and the redneck wannabes in their hot rod diesel pickups cruising the parking lot and raising hell, along with more than a few clouds of diesel and tire smoke....

Just a typical small town Walmart....   :-)

But you're right, between 4 and 7 am, there are very few people in Wallyworld....

Diesel Driver, that would have pissed me off to see a buggy full of kids at 2:00 a.m.  Why aren't those kids in bed, and did the drunken sperm donor give everyone a lift there?

Anyway, I have a hard time conjuring up tears for someone so destitute that she scours ads for a blue-ray player.  Come on.   That said, I believe everybody should shop whereever the hell they want to, and it's no business of mine or anybody else's.

I went one time when I had a bout of insomnia.  About 3-4 am.  I will not.  Not ever. Ever.  Do that again.  6:30 or 7:00am is perfect.

I've never been impressed with the Walmart food side of things.  The produce looked tired, the meat looked unappetizing.  WM is good for household staples and maybe a pair of shorts, that sort of thing.

We've found that the food prices at Walmart are generally slightly lower than the local supermarket, but I agree with their meats.....they are pretty second rate.....

That said, we buy our meat from Sam's Club, and it is terrific.....same company, different source apparently, and lower prices as well.

I have a Wal Mart right down the street. I refuse to shop there less than 8-10 times a week. :-)

Our Sams Club is perfect for a Saturday afternoon grazing/lunch. They have some great samples to be had. Truthfully we joined for the gas station. There's a Pilot station across the street that's always been the low price leader in the area. Now Sams feels the need to beat them by 4 or 5 cents a gallon. Who are we to argue?

The beef is "enhanced" with some sort of vile solution. It used to be listed on their labels, but last time I was in there the labels didn't show that information. However, it had the same look. Good beef will have a flat look, sort of like clay. When it's injected, it will look shiny, almost translucent and slimy. Occasionally, you'll get a piece of beef that will look that way naturally. But when all of their beef looks that way? They're mucking about with it.

And good grief, their ground beef flat out stinks when it's cooking. Even the better types such as the chuck or sirloin just don't smell normal. Working in a meat market has made me picky.  :-)

The closest Walmart we were stuck with, until recently, had a crappy produce section. It didn't seem to have any care given it. Now the new Walmart has a wonderful produce section. The regular groceries are almost always cheaper than everywhere else too.

That would explain the sorry cuts of meat I've gotten from there.  Whatever brine they're using, it's nasty stuff and doesn't cook worth a damn.  I had to cook my last Wal-Mart steak to well-done to get any flavor out of it and I've cooked enough beef to know a waterlogged piece of meat when I taste it.

I had the same experience when I ordered a "steak" at IHOP.
