Oh my.
I dunno.
"Vegetarian meatballs" sounds something like "fake real stuff."

Anyone have a good vegetarian meatball recipe? I've searched and there are literally hundreds. Because ingredients are so varied with each recipe, I hate to just pick one and hope for the best. So, does anyone here have a tested and approved meatball recipe?
First up, the always helpful, always cheerful, Grandma:

1. Hmmm. I've never tried to make them, but I think if I were going to attempt it I would probably try to use Quorn crumbles and see if I could get them to hold together with my real meatball method of egg, parm cheese, and seasonings. Now you've tweaked my curiosity to try this.

It does contain egg, so it will depend on what stripe of vegetarian they will be for.
Or, what the heck, the actually make a meatball product that you can adapt to any recipe it seems:

2. LOL! I never thought to look to see if there were "pre-made" vegetarian meatballs. Thanks for the suggestion. Will have to look at my local stores.
I want to make my fabulous buffalo wing meatballs, but one in our group is a vegetarian, so we all go v****e too.

3. Is your vegetarian friend ova-lacto v****e?
If so these will work, if not, I would look for a vegan product in the freezer section of your local Whole Foods and health food stores. Even the local family owned grocery here carries Quorn products and we're in Oklahoma, so hopefully won't be too difficult to find.
Good luck!
ETA: You may want to ask this person, too, about food allergies or if he/she is familiar with Quorn products. It can be problematic to introduce a new food product sometimes. I always hesitate to do it unbeknownst to guest.
Grandma's the only person besides franksolich who uses "unbeknownst."
Cool.

8. Quorn meatballs have a good texture but they're bland, bland, bland. You'll need to compensate by making sure there's adequate kick to the sauce.
I always made mine by guess and by gosh: tofu for protein, a little soaked bulgur for bite, seasoned with soy sauce, onion, mushroom, finely chopped raisins (yes, dammit, RAISINS), and oregano. Since they were egg free, I'd oil them and bake them rather than try to pan fry them. I'd sauce them at the last minute so they wouldn't fall apart.
People swore I'd cheated and there was meat in them.
Well, as we all know, the unfrocked warped primitive cheated, but not with a recipe.

4. Here's my vegetarian meatball recipe
I get rave reviews even from my meat eating friends.
1 package of Morning Star Crumbles
1 package of Morning Star Breakfast Patties, crumbled
3/4 cup of Italian Bread Crumbs
1/2 cup of Parmesan Cheese, grated
2 teaspoons of Basil
1 teaspoon of Oregano
1 teaspoon of Parsley
2-3 cloves of Garlic, minced
1/2 of medium Onion, minced
2 eggs
1/4 - 1/2 cup of Tomato Sauce (or ketchup)
Mix all ingredients well and shape into the size balls you would like. Place on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for about 20-25 minutes until browned.
I bake them rather than frying because they stay together more easily.
I have tried some of the prepared ones in the market, but they always seem to have a bland, mushy taste to me. These have a bit of a texture to them.

5. So, it seems it is doable, then.
Thanx for the recipe. I might try this then with the Quorn ground product.
ETA: The MSF products also contain eggs, and they are primarily soy protein so unless you get one of their organic products, it could be and most likely is GMO.
See last question in their FAQ: http://www.morningstarfarms.com/faq.aspx

7. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I can't resist their chik'n nuggets and Bill likes their new riblets, but we definitely keep it to a minimum.

Sounds like an enormous pain in the ass just to get some meatballs.

Fixxed!
No meat makes them just plain old balls. Something DUmmies love.

Haha, grandma suggested they look at Whole Foods. :evillaugh:
Generally I agree that fake meat stuff is to be avoided, but with two exceptions. I have had a tofu hot dog that was pretty good. There was also a tofu place in Santa Cruze that used to make a "Veggie Tofu Burger" that was pretty damn good. They were a little pricey, but I had a housemate who worked there and would bring home bags full of the burgers that didn't come out of the pattie shaper perfect.

I'll have a BLT. Hold the bacon, lettuce, and tomato.

That would be three slices of toast with mayo?

What the heck is a "Morning Star Crumble?" :lmao:
I thought something from the Al Gore thread had somehow gotten cyber-hiccuped into this one!

Meatless meatballs? :mental: The Good Lord didn't give us incisors and canines so we could chew on lettuce.

Didn't want to start a new cooking thread, but here's one DUmmie's favorite meal of the week. It sounds like roasted leftover Halloween candy:

bake as normal
400 for twenty minutes or so.
in a separate pan
A regular bag of baby carrots
A squirt of sesame oil(maybe a tablespoon or so)
a squirt of pancake syrup(maybe a tablespoon or so)
salt and pepper.
mix well the carrots and the mixture,
bake along side the chicken ,same time same temp
I serve it with white rice.
I have made this a few times and its been a big hit.

I think it sounds dreadful, but then again, I have no sweet tooth.

MorningStar makes "meatless" products: fake burgers, fake chicken nuggets, fake sausage, etc. Crumbles would be fake sausage in crumble form, instead of patty or link form. When cooked, it should resemble browned sausage, but I highly doubt it tastes like it.
-
Even something as revolting as "vegetarian meatballs" complies with the Homer Simpson Rule: "There is no food that cannot be improved by adding bacon bits and melted cheese."

DUmmies turn into rabbits in 5.......4.........3........2.......1........
I EAT meat! Stinkin' rabbit food! If we hadn't turn carnivore, we would still be living in the frikkin' trees!

It should be against the law to call the crap they are talking about "Meatballs" at all.

I'm wonderin' why the V****e police aren't complainin' about the word "meat" being in the recipe to begin with.

Why, if a person is vege-whatever would they want to eat fake meat? Kind of... well, I can't think of a nice way to put it.
Kind of a rheotorical question. Just thinking.

Agreed. It truly doesn't make sense.
-
Quorn? Queer corn? It would make sense for the dummies.
I've encountered Morningstar Crumbles, unfortunately. It was during an attempt at a meatless Lent - entire Lent. We made it, but myself just barely. The only way to eat crumbles is to hide them in strong seasonings, then trying one's best to not pay too much attention while eating.
-
I have never understood the concept of meatless meat. WTF? If you want a ****ing hot dog, eat a ****ing hot dog. If you want a ****ing meatball, eat a ****ing meatball! If you want to be a vegetarian, eat some real vegetables, not some vegetable "product" that resembles and tastes like meat. :thatsright:
My sister in law decided she and my (then) three year old nephew should be vegetarians. She'd buy him stuff like "chik'n nuggets" and veggie "sausage." Well eventually my nephew started porking up, at 4 1/2 he was into a 7X jeans. Turns out he was eating too much "chik'n" and macaroni and cheese and next to no fresh vegetables. She went back to meat a few months ago and the kid has already slimmed out a bit.
-
Making lawn clippings resemble meat in an attempt to replace meat sorta concedes the point we should eat meat doesn't it?
-
My son is bringing his girlfriend home for Thanksgiving.
She's a vegetarian.
I asked what I was supposed to feed her, his response......."Don't worry about it Mom, she can have a grilled cheese...." Oookkkkkkkkkkay...
He then added that he expected to be eating meat....and wanted to know what I would be cooking for him.... :uhsure:
