Title: EEEEK BUGS
Post by: vesta111 on November 15, 2009, 03:38:07 AM
I don't know where to put this post  so I'll drop it in your lap here.

With the cold coming on, lots of varmints are trying to find a warm place to winter. We have no problem with ants or roaches but for 7 days now we have been battling these things I think of as fruit fly.

Just in the kitchen and around the sink area.   These darn things are about the size of a grain of salt and fly about, they thank heavens don't bite they just seem to be increasing every day.

We have moved out the refer. and stove, cleaned the drains, cleaned under the sink, we cannot find any place they could be coming from, or anything they could be eating.

I was just in time to stop Hubby from getting out the Raid, a No-No in my kitchen, What the heck are these darn things eating ?

I wonder if these buggers came in in store brought produce, we did buy Bananas last week but I threw them out when I first noticed the bugs on them the next day. If it was the bananas why are these darn things still hanging out with no food after 5 days.?

Any ideas on this, this time of year there are no local grown fruits of veges. all comes from somewhere else in the world.   I have heard story's of people finding BIG spiders on foreign imported goods but I have never had this  fruit fly problem in my life.

BTW---- I have a friend that worked with tanned hides imported in from Africa. She opened a shipment to find a Cobra alive and mad as hell.

They multiply and live in trash cans a lot. I drape a plastic bag loosely over my kitchen trash can... Seems to help some.. A lot off those critters hang out by doors and come in when someone opens the door.

check your sugar and flour containers. If you have canisters that aren't sealed well, or if you just put the semi-opened bag in your pantry, you could have problems.

They can live for a few days with nothing...but there is probably a piece of fruit or fruit skin in a trash somewhere, or sugar spilled somewhere, or something open as Eupher said.  Absolutely get fly paper or a strip.  Another thing that works is Malrin.  It's a blue fly poison that you can pick up in farm stores, like Orschelns.  I sprinkle some on a bit of fruit and that seems to work best for fruit flies.

It can be very frustrating to find the source of the problem, though.  The last time we had them, I finally found a rotten apple core behind my washer.  I don't even want to know how that happened.   :censored:

I say you take off and nuke your house from orbit.  It's the only way to be sure.

I keep a spray bottle of bleach water, and spray down my sink and counters when I clean the kitchen,...it helps.

I had those little fruit flies show up when I got some food stuck in a sink drain.  I cleared out the drain... no flies.

Also had a problem with crickets finding their way under the door until the apartment management replaced the doors and windows a couple years ago.  The new doors came with new weatherstripping which has kept the bugs out so far.

Look to termits. Real little, light grey or white bugs. Like damp places. Had a problem in my bathroom. Sprayed and sealed the cracks around the base boards.

Do you have any potted plants inside?  They LOVE to live in the dirt.  I had a problem a month or so ago.  Moved my plants back out, and no more problem.

Every once in a while, I get them with the bananas I buy for the other half. (just another reason to not eat bananas....they have bug eggs on them. :uhsure:)

Around here, they also come with peaches, particularly if I buy them at a market, rather than from the grocery.

I've already had one mouse come in.  :(

Four cats in the house, and I come walking downstairs and walk into the family room/kitchen and the little f'r runs across my feet....oh yeah....I did scream. Scared the poop out of the other half, who was sitting 10 feet away with his back to me, watching tv. :evillaugh:

All four cats were just sitting there watching it run around.  :thatsright:

Little devil ran behind the bookcases (10 ft of 'em) that I wasn't about to move out from the wall. Haven't seen him since.

Other half won't let me have the porch door open any more either... :(
