Australia
THE first bills revealing a nasty 22 per cent hike in electricity prices have sparked a surge in complaints from pensioners and struggling families.
Local MPs and the Energy and Water Ombudsman have been besieged by aggrieved householders who have been shocked by new energy costs, approved this year by price regulator IPART.
*snip*
In NSW, electricity prices rose 21.7 per cent in the September quarter, water by 14.8 per cent and gas by 7.4 per cent, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
*snip*
But more price hikes are on the way. Last week, the Business Council of Australia forecast gas and electricity prices would double by 2015 due to global warming policies such as emissions trading.
"Prices will be forced up by increasing domestic demand and huge investments in infrastructure to maintain reliable supply, plus compliance with the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme and rising international gas prices," said Scott Thompson of the BCA.
IPART says further price hikes are inevitable and could hit again by next July 1.

It seems to me that we have enough failed examples of Cap and Trade schemes to know that it will wreak havoc on the economy.

Wreak havoc on an economy that is still shedding jobs...and the healthcare bill will put the last nail in the coffin. Pres. O will have his spot in history, but there may be no remaining American historians to nail his name to the top of the "Worst Ever" list.

Im still debating with myself about wheather he'll go down as the worst president ever of the USA or the first/best communist president of the USSA.

The people of Australia have got the bill already. The electric cos are saying "You got what you wanted, now you have to pay for it." How long do you think the green legislation will last with 20% electric hikes?
-
I pay my electric bill on what is called a "equalizer payment". Because here in AZ, most of the electrical usage is from the AC systems in the summer, those bills can be over $350 a month. With the equalizer, they just average the payments for the whole year, which lessens the summer bills but raises the winter bills.
I have recently...
Replaced both central AC units - going from 12 SEER to 18 SEER units (more "efficient")
Replaced dishwasher with new "Energy Star" model
Replaced refrigerator with new "Energy Star" model
Replaced washer / dryer with new front loading "Energy Star" models
Replaced all bulbs in lamps with the new swirly bulbs.
Installed dimmers on all overhead incandescent lights.
My thanks for this?
My "equalizer" payment just went UP by $39 a month.

Did they recently raise the electric rates? Our electric company starts petitioning for new rate increases as soon as they are granted one.

I recently canceled my recycling service. I was told that recycling was important for the environment; to wit I responded, "If it's so important and good stop charging me an extra $216/year."
I like Christians, they only charges wages for sin, they don't penalize you for doing good. Liberals make it cost too much to be good.

My utility bill averages about $70 a month. We have tons of natural gas in this country. Why are we pissing money down the drain with all this expensive green energy like solar and wind?

Yeah they did, and they're already petitioning for more.
We have the nations largest nuclear power plant just 40 miles west of here, unfortunately, 90% of the electricity it generates goes WEST.

I hope you aren't expecting the CFLs to be super long life. It may work out that way in table lamps where the CFLs are upright and vertical. Inside the base is a little power supply circuit, not unlike the power supply in your computer (or the power adapter for your laptop). Its heat dissipation is OK oriented vertically, but much less so in other orientations. In electronics, heat is not your friend. For the technoid life forms here, if any, CFLs also are not power-factor corrected. The meaning of this is a bit technical, but it basically means that CFLs cause losses in the grid and your wiring that make them less efficient than advertised.

Mine's the 160 acres out back! We have our own compost. The only thing that goes to the dump is tin cans, which can't be recycled down at "Hide and Steele".

My first electric bill in this new house about stroked out the wife and I. There was a 108 dollar charge they rolled onto us from the closing of her last account. A 340 dollar charge for the partial month of August. Then the 290 buck September bill.
$738 first bill. They claimed to have sent us an August bill via email. Lie, no one was signed up for email billing. Luckily October was a cooler month. We'd had the windows open and the ceiling fans going. The bill was under $200. November we ran nothing. We suffered and got the bill down to 110 and managed to get everything caught up and stable.
New bulbs, new energy star fridge and a new 18 SEER a/c brought the December bill in at $93. Now that we're on the cheap they're jacking the rates up this month. But luckily we scheduled back before Christmas and Monday they're coming to inspect our A/C and Water Heater for the company controlled shut-offs that cut off our high power hogs during peek demand times. They say it's only a couple times a year but we get a discount every month for having the equipment ready if need be. There will never be a $300 power bill here again.
I have an unused solar water heater on the roof. I may find out why it's been disconnected or maybe see about replacing it with one of those new fancy roll up solar panels and running some LED lighting off of battries. Maybe hook up both. I hate FP&L :hyper:

Jimmy Carter is smiling at that thought.
