Title: What do you think of Quiverfull families (e.g. the Duggar Family)?
Post by: jinxmchue on November 10, 2009, 01:31:34 PM
Just curious.  The "Conservative/Liberal"/"Atheist/Non-atheist" refers to what you are, which should be obvious.

Funny, when I was a kid we had a different name for them: Catholics.

The neighbors across the street were practicing Catholics... huge family.

As long as the parents are supporting the children THEMSELVES or with the help of their extended family, I'm fine with it. i don't like funding lifestyle choices whether it's a ghetto queen or a family of conservative Christians. If you have the power to live by your convictions, you also accept the responsibility to fund the outcome of those beliefs.

IN theory though, I think it's wonderful. Children are a wonderful thing, but I do think one has to have a certain patience to deal with that many children. I also think it's not a good lifestyle choice for women who have difficult pregnancies.

What she said.  I think the Duggars look and act like a wonderful family.  Their children will all turn out to benefit society.  I wish I could say the same for more children.

Not exclusively Catholics......my (Protestant) mother-in-law has/had ten brothers and sisters........back then they were referred to as "farm labor"......

Wow.  I just searched Facebook for both "Duggars" and "Quiverfull."  There's a lot of hate for these families out there.

If I recall there is much hatred of "quiverfull" on DU, also.

And DU is populated by liberals and atheists.  Imagine that.

It seems that if you are a liberal or an atheist, you're likely to hate the Duggars.  Moreso if you're both.

I can't imagining having that many children but I tip my hat to those who can do it without any help.

I think they are crazy, but they can afford their brood so why not?   The kids seem happy and well cared for.

I have to question the sanity of a woman who is willing to put her body through that many pregnancies(more than 5 or 6). After doing it twice....and being fortunate to have one of each sex...no way in hell was I going to do it again!

That being said....if a married couple wants to have a whole bunch of children....can provide for them...house, feed, clothe, educate.., love them equally, nuture them....then more power to them.

It's a personal choice, and provided the above is being done....I don't think anyone has the right to criticize those that opt for huge families.

I think in the case of the Duggers....there is probably some sort of envy/jealousy involved. Not many people can have 19-20? kids and provide for them exceptionally well, and all of them turn out to be a pretty decent family. There are many out there, who can't do it for just one or two...

At least the Duggars are not on welfare. Got to give them credit.

There's a strong hatred for people who have kids in general.  I've stumbled across a couple of their websites.

They refer to women with kids as "breeders".

I think they are nuts...but shouldn't be judged because as others have said...they are able to provide for each of those kids.....And they have a buddy system where an older child coaches the youngest...so the older kids are also "parenting" the younger ones.

I think the kids must have loads of fun as they always have someone to play with...and I don't see any negative outcome on that end....but the parents, on the other hand, may have some weird need to always be needed...

I think more Christians should have large families.  We need to raise up a bunch of hard-working taxpayers, or we're all gonna starve in our old age.   :-)

Really, it's tough to give enough time to lots of kids, but older kids usually take some of the burden...and also learn how to parent before they're stuck full-time with their own littles.  It should greatly reduce the errors so many of us made with our first.

On an aside, have you ever seen video or pics of their house?  My kids would have LOVED growing up in that house!!

I was watching a show on this subject last night and I still shake my head because I can not imagine being in that kind of family. I don't mind the practice for that many kids it is the actual having and caring for that many children scares the hell out of me.

Yeah, it's not for everyone, but if you can pull it off, I think it's fantastic.  The Duggar kids seem pretty normal and well-adjusted, so the parents are doing something right.

I just can't imagine putting my body through that many pregnancies.

But I've never understood women who said they liked/loved being pregnant.

I truly believe that having a child grow inside of you is a miraculous thing....and the end result is wonderful....but the 9 months of incubation and the act of getting the baby from inside to outside world.....was not my idea of fun. The fun was over with about 10 minutes after the act of getting the potential baby from the outside world into the inside world.

That's cause she's bringing in a significant amount of money every year.....kind of like an annuity...

Yeah, I never got the i love being pregnant thing either. Really was a very miserable time--I felt like crap the whole time, but what makes it tolerable is the fact that one is bringing another life into the world. Plus, pregnancy and labor have an end. The pain and discomfort are finite so that is always helpful too. I agree with you, yet again, deb.  :cheersmate:

You can make that back with a profit if you sell the kids to Arabs...or off-shore pharmaceutical companies.
