House narrowly passes landmark health care bill

By DAVID ESPO

WASHINGTON (AP) - In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.

The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress.

A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later.

"It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it," said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.

In the run-up to a final vote, conservatives from the two political parties joined forces to impose tough new restrictions on abortion coverage in insurance policies to be sold to many individuals and small groups. They prevailed on a roll call of 240-194.

Let's look at Andrew Breitbart's take on this . . .

Quote
House Passes PelosiCare
by Publius
Just after 11pm EST, the House of Representatives passed the 2,000+ page Pelosi Health Care bill by a vote of 220-215. 39 Democrats were given the opportunity to vote no, in what will go down in history as the most ’structured’ roll call of all time. (1 GOP member, Rep. Cao from New Orleans voted with the Democrats.) The Senate is unlikely to take up any health care reform legislation this year. With unemployment expected to stay above 10% through at least the early part of next year, it isn’t certain the Senate will ever take it up.

http://biggovernment.com/2009/11/07/house-passes-pelosi-care/#more-27190

And, if they do, well, Sen. Tom Coburn is ready for that . . .

Quote
Why We Love Sen. Coburn, Reason #325:  Dr. No Threatening to Have Bill Read on Senate Floor

by Publius

From Politico:

Sen. Tom Coburn, the Oklahoma Republican who developed a close friendship with President Obama when they served together in the Senate, is threatening to have the entire health care bill read on the Senate floor.

Senior Senate Democratic aides had heard Coburn was considering having potentially thousands of pages read aloud in effort to stall passage. “If he did this it would be even outrageous for a guy who’s become known as Dr. No around here,” one of them told POLITICO.

Coburn’s office confirmed that he is indeed thinking about having the bill read.

“That’s a possibility,” Coburn spokesman John Hart said. “He wants to make sure everyone has a chance to read the bill.”

Coburn, who has a reputation for using procedural rules to block and delay legislation, has been an outspoken critic of the president’s health care overhaul. He recently told the New York Times: “My mission is to frame this health care debate in terms of the fiscal ruin of this country. … I have instructed my staff to clear my schedule for every minute that bill is on the floor.”

I quoted the entire post, because the important parts were in the last paragraph.  That link is at:

http://biggovernment.com/2009/11/06/why-we-love-sen-coburn-reason-325-dr-no-threatening-to-have-bill-read-on-senate-floor/

The Dems really think that destroying this country financially is the way to go, don't they?  :whatever: :hammer:

Thanks for that, Saint.
My brand spanking new moonbat creep Owens also voted for it.  Not only that, he voted against the abortion amendment.  Hmmm did he have a chance to read the 2000 pages?  In a district with at least 45% conservative?  OK this is war.

Although I am disappointed by this result, I was expecting it - However, the narrow passage in the house is heartening. It will probably die in the Senate.

sure, we voted, and so did they. but the difference is: it's their job to REPRESENT us in congress, not vote however the hell they want.  That's why the title is REPRESENTATIVE.

Over 50% of the nation doesn't want this bill, but they chose to shove it down our throats anyway.  That's not representation.  In fact, with the higher burden that this will place on the average taxpayer (not that you would know, because I doubt you have a job to pay taxes from), this bill is morally tantamount to strongarm robbery.

And the fact that 39 democrats voted against this bill just demonstrates the strong arm tactics (and possibly threats) from the Pelosi team didn't work on everyone.

There will indeed be a bloodbath in 010. Most districts, with the exception of liberal strongholds, will go R.

I watched Randi Rhodes on the Joy Behar show....she said the only reason McConnell and Christie won over their democrat counterpart is because they were moderates and didn't run on social issues.  I didn't follow their campaigns, is any part of this true?

Landslide GOP wins in 2010 -- this bill doesn't take effect until 2014?    Plenty of time to undo this disaster if the Senate actually commits political suicide and tries to pass this.

McConnell won because Deeds was a creep a-hole who openly admitted on tape that he had the most pork in Richmond. People chose McDonnell in spite of the negative campaign against him that dredged up his old college paper that talked about women in a less than enlightened way.

I think that it's more like 80% that DO NOT want this public health care option ESPECIALLY with the potential for fines and imprisonment. Quite honestly, I would like to see a public referendum on this legislation. It's obvious that our Representatives no longer represent their constituents. IF the US is going to go a further 1½ TRILLION in debt, I THINK that it's citizens really ought to have a say in the matter.
