Title: Taking Off.....
Post by: franksolich on November 06, 2009, 06:31:05 PM
*****ANNOUNCEMENT FROM franksolich*****

The Thanksgiving Holiday, during which time it is important to be grateful to God for all that one has, no matter what one has, is a mere twenty days away.

At our old home, there was a tradition, which lasted exactly one time, where, as members took off to join family and loved ones for the holiday--and hence would be gone from our old home--they announced it to one and all as they headed out the door.

It was a great tradition, and I wish it had been continued.

It's important because not everybody will be away for the holiday, and this moderator in particular has to hang around, to be sure everybody's following the rules.

This moderator of course celebrates Thanksgiving--it's the most important holiday of the year, to him--but at home, in solitude, taking time to be grateful for all those who went before him, pausing to reflect upon those suffering deprivation and want in the socialist paradises, thinking about the soldiers and sailors far afield, and thanking God he was born franksolich and not a primitive.

Besides sitting in front of the computer.

November, for statistics, is not likely to be as good as the record-breaking October had been, because members and guests have much going on in real life, around the time the holidays get going.

So there's going to be sparse traffic.

However, it's always nice to know which members are away (and not ticked off at conservativecave), enjoying the time with family and loved ones.

It's not mandatory--oh God no--but just a courtesy, so that we staying behind may wish those dashing out the door Godspeed.

I'll remind everybody again in about, oh, eighteen days.

Not going anywhere. Everyone is joining me, at my house, for Thanksgiving dinner. I'll probably be posting on here more sporadically as I start the planning and execution of the "the perfect dinner".

I can't abandon this place forever. I would go insane.  :-)

That's what happens, madam; real life interferes, but real life is more important anyway.

I'm on the road the next three weeks - home only on weekends. Thxgiving is 2 hours away, for a 1 hour lunch, with my Mom's family. I'll likely be at home surfing the web, working on the house and hugging my new floors.

I'll be working Thanksgiving, 2-10:30pm, so I'll be online.  I don't expect it to be busy that day which suits me fine.

I hope to be able to get online over that long weekend but we are moving into our new house and who knows if I'll be able to find the internet jack much less my laptop. :-) I promise to let you know though.....

Please do inform, madam, that week, Thanksgiving week.

I recall when this was done that one single solitary time at our old home, it was really great.

Out here in the Sandhills of Nebraska that particular Thanksgiving, it was lightly snowing, temperatures in the high 20s, the cats feasting on pure white chicken meat, the multicolored Christmas lights flickering on the William Rivers Pitt, it being warm and cozy inside the house, and for me, in solitude in front of the computer, it was nice, thinking of all beyond the great expanse of the Sandhills, having similarly good times with family and loved ones.

These "I'm taking off now.....", either as independent threads or tacked onto someone else's "taking off now" threads, bring one much cheer, even if one is already full of cheer.  I'm a sentimentalist.

I see you like to go all out with the decorations.  Very festive. :rotf:

Oh I too want to see the William Rivers Pitt donned in gay apparel.

What happened was that three years ago, the neighbor, who lives six miles up the road, the one with whom I'm always having these "experiences" (the cow childbirth, the wreck caused by the Ohio primitive, his red-haired wife, his bossy father, my showing up at his place all bloody as if I've endured massive gunshot wounds, &c., &c., &c.), decided the William Rivers Pitt needed decorated.

I told him I wasn't about to string a line of extension cords a block and a half, from the house to the William Rivers Pitt.

And besides, what about the cats?

He said no problem.

One night I awoke during the middle of the night, and looked outdoors, at the gently falling snow in the darkness, and there it was, the William Rivers Pitt, all sparkling and multi-colored.  He had plugged some light-weight fence-posts into the William Rivers Pitt, and strung cheap Dollar General lights powered from a little tiny portable battery in some metal case.

The lights, when they were lit, but not blinking, read "GWB."

I feel for you guys.  The only thing worthwhile in it was that packet of coffee.

Yeah, but theyr'e loaded with calories to keep your metabolism going. I have a very utilitarian view of food. I see it as an energy source to keep the body going. Nothing more. But I do loves me some Italian food!

And you will be in our Thanksgiving prayers.....along with all of your brethren.

I'll be here.

Doing dinner at friends, they eat early so I won't be on Thanksgiving morning as I will be cooking....but I will be here probably later in the day and throughout the holiday.

Frank....what a charming thing for your neighbors to do. They obviously think a great deal of you. As they should.

My experience with MREs has been in the field, not surprisingly. But one of the real problems of life in the field is dehydration. Regardless of the outdoor temperatures, the tendency for soldiers in the field is to avoid drinking water. Hence the dehydration and the inevitable constipation.

Besides, digging a cat hole or taking a dump in a porta-potty that hasn't been emptied in two weeks ain't entirely a blissful experience, worthy of reading 3 chapters in your novel and waiting until your legs fall asleep while sitting on the throne.     :uhsure:

They were a lifesaver during the ice storm last year.  I have a couple of cases in the basement, and one or two of those in the car as part of my kit.

As far as my Thanksgiving, depends on whether or not I'm working and who is serving up dinners for the needy--I'm pretty sure the Legion does every year, so I'm thinking I'll just help out there.

Outstanding. I volunteer at a homeless shelter about once a month when I have time. Some of these people are beyond down on their luck. They have drug and mental issues. Many should be forced to enter rehab and get mental evaluation and put on meds. Of course if that was done, the ACLU would be there in an instant arguing their case whether the homeless wanted them or not.

We have a tradition I started about 5 years ago for my family.  I set a separate seating with no name plate for our unknown guest.  They are the spirit of someone lost in battle in any American war.

We have a lively time deciding on who we want to share ThingsGiving with, I think last year it was Jim Bowie so we took away all knives from his place as we figured he would not part even in death with his Bowie Knife.

This year Hubby is going for Glen Miller, Me, I'm going to make my Yankee family  get all hot and bothered by putting up Robert E. Lee, a true genius and a gentleman to boot.

What ever happens this year if I am too ill to host the gathering, Hubby and I will sit with our unknown guest just by ourselves and dollars to donuts he will have a CD playing Glen Miller for most of the day.  Then I get to put on the Oak Ridge Boys and their rendition of Dixie.

For a crowd I put on , at my table,

The turkey,
Buffalo small roast,
Lobsters, shrimp and steamed clams.
If I can get it a small moose steak or deer.

Every kind of fix-en anyone can think of.

This is the Holiday I remember most and that dinner is the most important one for me as an American.
Time to reflect and think of our blessings .

Kids and friends thought I was nuts at first but most of them have introduced my tradition to their friends and extended family.

Mostly vacation but we are bringing along my MIL (flying her in from Cleveland) as she's all alone there.  At the end of the week, we're putting her on a plane to Jacksonville, FL to stay with her daughter and family through the New Year.

It could be a bit interesting this year getting down onto the island as the nor'easter that roared up the coast last week took out a portion of Hwy 12 -- the only N/S road that crosses over from Nags Head. However, a gravel bed has apparently been laid across where the asphalt was undermined or you can just drive on the beach a bit if you have 4 wheel drive (we do).  The Outer Banks emergency personnel are extremely efficient in cleaning up and repairing roads, etc. since they have to do it a few times every year it seems!

The husband and I will be driving to Biloxi, Mississippi to meet my sister and her husband and have some fun - maybe gamble, probably laugh a lot, and eat some very good and fattening food for a day or two.  We're homebodies so this will be a nice change of pace.  And maybe I'll even win something.

This is Thanksgiving week, so just a reminder and a bump.

If you're taking off for the holiday, and will be gone from here for a few days, please announce it--if so inclined (perhaps one might not be inclined, which is understandable)--here, so that we stay-at-homes won't worry about you.

Could some figure of Higher Authority here change the title of this thread to "Taking Off....." or something similar?

Thanks.

Most of my family "did" Thanksgiving at the Blackpowder/Mountain man rendezvous this past weekend.  I had planned to do the same, but ended up with some kind of stomach flu Saturday early morning...and after 3 hours of trying to manage with an unheated outhouse, I gave up.  Heated bathrooms and modern plumbing are frequently unappreciated miracles!   :-)

So, anyway, I left the pre-1840's canvas-tent city and went back to the modern city with great thankfulness - which was quite appropriate.

This means that we won't have any big family dinner this year, but I do have 2 daughters with 3 grandchildren coming home Friday, so will probably work Thursday and take a 3 day weekend.  I'll likely be on here just about as much as usual...in between finding Nick or Cartoon Network for my grands...   :-)

For all of you heading out, Safe Travels and Joyful Returns!

Ain't goin' anywhere either, but my butt will be parked in the kitchen pretty much all day Thursday. Mrs E wants to entertain 7 people, so that means I cook.   :banghead:

She'll clean the rest of the house, so it's a bit of a tradeoff. I don't mind chopping onions as long as she dusts.

Wednesday morning will see my girlfriend Kristin and I jetting off to rainy Seattle for the holidays. She's never had the chance to travel so we're going somewhere that I know so I can play tour guide. Thanksgiving day, we'll actually be in Vancouver taking in the sights and letting me get pictures for my portfolio.

I'm taking my laptop with me, so I'll probably be ducking in and out as time permits.
