Figures about Rape and Women in the Military
 http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronic...

(05-12) 04:00 PST Chicago -- Ninety percent of women under 50 who have served in the U.S. military and who responded to a survey report being victims of sexual harassment, and nearly one- third of the respondents of all ages say they have been raped. The incidence of violent assaults among female veterans, the vast majority of whom reported at least one ``severe assault,'' is much higher than in the general population and raises questions about the treatment of women currently on active duty and the 1.2 million veterans, researchers said.

The abuse may be responsible for an increased risk among female veterans of depression, anxiety and hospital treatment, Maureen Murdoch and Kristin Nichol of the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center wrote in the Archives of Family Medicine, published yesterday by the American Medical Association....

As one woman solider observed, "There are only three things the guys let you be if you're a girl in the military - a bitch, a ho, or a dyke."

Or – as it turns out – their prey.

A new study, Factors Associated with Women's Risk of Rape in the Military Environment, reveals that 1 in 3 women are raped in the military. That means that simply by joining the military a woman automatically increases her chances of being raped.

And that's not all. Researchers found that 37% of attempted raped and raped women also reported being raped more than once and 14% of them reported being gang raped....

http://www.veteransforpeace.org/Military_rape_awareness...

A 2004 study of women veterans from Vietnam and all wars since, who were seeking help for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), found that 71% said they were sexually assaulted or raped while serving.

The VA study (referenced in the title above) was funded by the Army Medical Research Department and found that 30% of women veterans said they were raped while serving. That is almost one in three.

Thirty seven percent of the attempted raped and raped women in the VA study also reported being raped more than once and 14% of them reported being gang raped. This study also discovered that 75% of raped women in the military failed to report it.

Although this is an epidemic, it is not being treated as one....

It's all those gang rapes on military bases that are not being reported...

6. And some stupid men want us to be drafted
into this horror show. They must be wannabe rapists who want to widen the selection of victims or just stunningly ignorant.

Yes, this makes me angry. The "boys will be boys" attitude of the military is infuriating.

I wonder if they'd have been so tolerant of lynching when black troops were brought into the service in large numbers in WWII.

racism, reaching for conclusions, and seperated from reality, Warpy makes a statement.

7. The other option, of course, is all female brigades, who do everything but combat.
That may seem discriminatory, but it might actually work.

Segregation? I think the Army already tried that...

17. When I went into the USAR.......
Edited on Sun Nov-01-09 04:03 PM by AnneD
That was the first thing my girlfriends cautioned me about. I had 2 ex-military gal pals and one had not 1 but 2 incidences happen to her and the other had friends that it had happened to. They read me the riot act and I will forever be grateful. I was overly cautious and I might have missed out on some experiences, but I just didn't want to take the chance.

The Army has gotten a little bit better-but they advance at a snails pace. They just haven't really dealt honestly and fairly with women yet. They try but they just are not there yet.

The Army Reserve is not the Army. It lacks discipline, as seen by the retards in charge of Abu Garib.

43. It is not just the men....

it is the whole culture of the military. How can you sensitize the men enough not to attack their own forces, but not so much that they will still attack the enemy. Frankly, I'm for doing away with military all together but that does not seem a possibility any time soon.

When I joined the military-I though my biggest worry was the 'enemy'. What a shock that my greatest danger lie with some of my brothers in arms.

From joining the Reserves to doing away with the military, all in three posts...

Now- notice that the results in the OP (90%) are for sexual harrassment, not rape.... 33% say they've been raped. 14% say gang raped.

The RESPONDENTS.  Look at that word again, DUmmies.  Not "ALL WOMEN".  Just the ones who bothered to write back.

Lemme tell ya, as a former AD member, you look at a woman cross-eyed, your ass is grass.  Period.

That's the one thing I miss about infantry units.  Ya never had to worry about something you say being taken the wrong way, and even if it was, the offended party would just beat your ass instead of file a report.

Sexual harassment is in the eye of the beholder.  We were told at work that someone could claim "harassment", just by being a witness to something that made them uncomfortable.

Maybe in the old days but if your spouse is in Iraq or Afghanistan they belong to others. They can't keep condoms in stock over there.

Durring my 8 years of service, part of that time on a large ship I never had a problem. Of course I am not that uptight either.
Of course I met my husband while on active duty and I know that some of the more unhinged ones would consider than rape. :whatever:

Where are you getting this statistic from?  I'm on my second deployment, and I am the person responsible for ordering of medical supplies for my unit.  I have yet to order a single condom, nor have I had anyone ask for them.

Do these things happen? Sure, people are people. But what you said makes it sound like we haven't found OBL because we're all busy knocking boots.

Girls will be girls.....and girls just want to have fun.

....and then change their minds.

Wonder what percentage that covers?

I have a friend who was gang raped while in the military, she reported it, and all three men were dealt with accordingly.

College campuses tend to have fairly high rape statistics as well, should we not encourage women to go to college because of that as well?

No matter how stringent the requirements and expectations in the military, some bad guys are going to slip through.  I don't know if that would increase if more of the military were drafted rather than voluntarily enlisted.  However, I do have major issues with mothers being drafted.  Granted, I don't particularly like the idea of the draft in general.
