If you own a cat, is it for purely ornamental or egotistical reasons, or do you manage to gain some sort of utility from it?
-
I love my cat!
She is an affectionate lapcat and she makes me laugh daily with her antics. She's a calico.

I use mine as guard dogs.
They're trained to alert me if something isn't kosher.

Cute kitty. I'm allergic to cats, so I'm still on the lookout for a fuzzy little lapdog that needs a good home.
The seller I bought my Datsun from had a short-haired calico. He was an interesting fellow (the cat).

That's not MY cat, but looks exactly like her. I have pics of her at home that I will post.

People don't "own" cats...........
-
Our oldest cat just got killed by a coyote after slipping out the back door. We'd adopted her stray about 10 years ago, turned out she was pregger and infested with fleas at the time - that sucked.
-
I have little saddles for mine and I put G.I. Joes on them and watch them play Buckin' Bronco! We laugh and laugh.
-
We have 4.....they really don't know they are cats.
They come when they are called, they want to be whereever we are, they lay on us, sleep with us, each have distinct personalities.
I have a question for you other cat owners.....do any of you have cats that play with toilet paper. We have 2 that unroll them, if they can....if they can't they "fang" them and semi shred the rolls. Don't know how to get them to stop either.....
RC....I'm so sorry about your kitter-kat..... :(
-
I totally don't get the "cat thing".
-
My cat's main purpose is to keep the cat food industry going by eating only the gravy from her cat food. She's getting up there in years, I've had her almost 13 years now.
-
Does permanently scaring myself, and friends count as a useful purpose?
We're actually getting rid of our cat. Giving her to my mom.
-
My girlfriend has three cats. They're pretty much for decoration, though they do a pretty good job of keeping us warm at night.
One of them thinks he a dog though, so that's pretty funny.
-
Mine is a bed heater, and occasionally he catches a mouse.

We come home to dead snakes every now and then. Last night was one of those times.

Nope, my kitty doesn't do that....my cat acts like a dog too...she comes when I call her....she very affectionate, sometimes too much. My cat who died a few months ago, (17 y/o, died of old age) also a calico, was an anti-social attack cat :mental:. this new kitten is quite the opposite.

Cats are more interesting then dogs, my 2 Maine Coon cats are bigger then my dogs and fearless.
They are house cats, never go outside so no need to be walked, cleanup is nothing with the electronic litter machine. No fleas or ticks very clean.
Smart also, they have learned by watching me how to open doors, they like to play in water so they now can get a drink from the kitchen sink--problem, they can turn the water on but don't know enough to shut it off. And I followed someones suggestion and removed the knobs on my gas stove as they were playing with them. I see a problem on the horizon here, if they get any bigger, they love to place with ice and are just about big enough to reach the handle for the ice maker on my ref. door.
Nurses at times, when I have a bad day they will run off the dogs and stay on my bed as I sleep, they both love a balled up small piece of paper to chase after and they return it to me.
Inspectors of the house, any and all shopping bags must be inspected when brought into the house, all empty boxes no matter how small must be examined for size in case they can fit into it.
The male at 28 lbs. is too big to be a jumper, but the female at 20 lbs. sails of the tops of door jams and can jump to the top of my cabinets if she so wishes.
They say these are one man cats and I tend to believe it. The male adores Hubby, and the female follows me where ever I go. Neither meows, they chirp sort of and we have counted over a dozen different chirps and can somewhat tell what they are saying.
Don't get me wrong, I love my dogs but nothing beats sitting before the fire on a snowy day reading a book with a cat purring away in your lap.
-
My cats are entertainment, and lap warmers. I love them to death.
-
We have two. One is the sweetest cuddliest little pookiebear in the whole world. The other is cute and soft but not so cuddly. They are both incredible mousers! No mouse, chipmunk, or mole is safe even near our house. My sweet kitty also thinks he is a dog. He goes outside to go potty, plays fetch, and humps everything that will stay still long enough to hump.
-
I have two. They keep the mice away and also serve the purpose of keeping my ego in check. One superior stare from them and I'm back in my place. Also, they keep the vacuum busy.
-
ex-girlfriend has my cat. She was watching it when I was traveling for work, and she never brought the cat back. Oh well - she loves the cat and I still travel a lot, so it works fine.

This is our big fat chunker cat Molly:

She serves no purpose but to be cute and sweet. Despite being spayed, she's a momma-cat through and through. She loves to grab some little stuffed kids toy or another and walk around with it in her mouth "mrow"-ing.

Oreo, our cat, served the purpose of helping me keep my sanity while my wife was in the final push for her master's a couple of years ago (so I answered "yes" above). Oreo could now be called "Double Stuff," as she is rather well-fed. However, she does come when called (but only if I am the one to call her) . . . sometimes. The Heiress absolutely loves Oreo, and Oreo tolerates The Heiress rather well. My wife and Oreo get along well, too.
-
No cat in our house. We have two parrots. I've heard that birds and cats don't mix well.... :uhsure:
-
I have a grouchy orange tabby who thinks the world revolves around him. He is Mr-A number one asshole to all but his people. Those he chooses of course. Then he loves them to death.
In all honesty he's a sweet little lover, but he's got a mean streak to him.
-
I totally don't get the "cat thing".
Ditto. I tolerate them.

Yes, turn the roll around. They may still shred a bit, but they can spin the roll all day and it won't unravel.
-
Two cats infest the inside of my house, and we have one useful cat who lives outside. The inside cats are just poop & hairball factories. The outside cat keeps the mice out of the garage/workshop where she sleeps at night.
Can you tell I'm a dog person?
-

Already have done that.
If it's on the right way...they unroll it. If it's on the wrong way they shred it with their teeth, as they only have back claws...they can do a number on the TP. ::)

cats have utility other than a convenient way to spend my paycheck at the vet? (one of ours has a liver shunt, needs special food and frequent checkup due to suppressed immune system)
the other one is pretty funny. she talks back when you talk to her.
but, utility... no.

As opposed to other cats who don't?
-
Remember, Frank is not a cat person. :fuelfire: :-)

I have a species confused dog. He acts like a cat. He started this, when he stayed over at a friend's house while I was out of town. He now cleans himself like a cat. Not cute. He gives himself gargatuan hairballs, as he is 59 lbs.
I am a dog person. I am allergic to cats and loathe litter boxes.

If other dogs pick on him, it's a hate crime.

Wow. I didn't even think about that. Good to know. :II:

As opposed to other cats who don't?
OK let me rephrase that...He not only thinks but demands the world revolve around him.

There's violence and bloodshed well beyond normal?

There's violence and bloodshed well beyond normal?
Saddest thing in the world is to see a Pit Bull or Rottie with a cat planted on their face.
I have had cats that would attack any dog that wandered into the yard. they would leap up attach themselves with their claws to the dogs head and ride the poor thing down.
I have seen on You Tube little house cats attacking and running off bears---funny as Hell.
We have to remember that of all species the cat has never changed its instincts. A full grown cat is no different from the large cats in the zoo---size makes the difference.
Dogs have been breed for different instincts, some hunt, some are house pets. Cats of any size are just all alike from the Lion to your Tabby cat.
We cannot handle a tiger in our home but we can love and be loved by a smaller cat that is thinking as the big boys do.
