Title: The Facebook Curse?
Post by: Hawkgirl on October 29, 2009, 05:33:01 PM
Ok, so I was being dramatic in the subject header...but have people from your past (that you'd much rather forget) contacted you?
I got a message from a boyfriend of 13 years ago.  It was what you would call a rough rollercoater ride (our relationship).  While the message was nice and short and didn't really bother me, I still don't know if I should respond.
I guess you could say it ended badly...not that it had any profound affect in my life...he wasn't "the one who got away".

Admittedly, I have searched for old friends and even dates on Facebook, I never contacted them because well, the past should stay in the past.

Anyway, I have no real question....just thoughts...

The Facebook Curse also comes with the Facebook BLOCK feature.  Simply ignore his message if it makes you uncomfortable, and through up the block, so he can't contact you again.

You'll notice there is no feature that tells you who - or how many people, for those especially dense ones - is blocking/ignoring/hiding your messages.  You simply go on with your facebook existence blithely unaware, or step up the level of cyber stalking.  :hammer:

That's what gets me about these social networking sites... you have plenty of opportunities to block/ignore someone before they become a problem.

I never thought about blocking someone I haven't even thought about in over a decade.

He made a comment about my profile picture and asked if she was my baby...I'm uncomfortable having him know ANYTHING about my personal life.  You're right, it's cyberstalking....and he's IS definetly the type to do that.

Sigh....

A toe ain't chit.  Get back to me when it's showing a camel's ankle.

In my FB friend list, I have one ex-husband, 4 ex-boyfriends, and a dude I was a penpal with after meeting up in Park City skiing when I was 16 or so.  I didn't request any of them, they found me, but, I don't have any animosity toward them either.  Shoot, all the boyfriends were in Jr high and High School, and my ex and I divorced in 96, and still end up in the same social circle.  I know, I am wierd.

I don't mind old flames or even enemies looking me up.  I am really happy with my life now and there is nothing they can do or say to make a dent in that.

I'm kind of the same way, except I have a bunch of ex-girlfriends (mostly college) who are my friends.  No animosity, just a place to read about what's going on in our lives, if anything.

I was also able to reconnect with a bunch of high school friends, which has been a total hoot.  I even started dating one. :thatsright: :-)  We get together every so often, last weekend was the most recent gathering.  One of the gals (who is now a doctor) said to us after she had a few cocktails the other night that she's so happy that we've all gotten to know each other.  Because in our little group, we all weren't close friends in high school.  It has been an interesting experience.  I've only been on since January or February of this year.

I can understand being wary of the stalker-ish types, Hawkgirl.  I blocked one ex-girlfriend, because I was afraid she'd start semi-stalking me again.  It is partially why I still post as invisible both here and at CU, because she used to check and see if I was on-line, then pound on my door a few minutes later. :banghead:

I don't think it is a curse, it can be whatever you want it to be.  You can reveal as much or as little as you like, just like the Cave.
