Coyotes kill woman on hike in Canadian park

TORONTO – Two coyotes attacked a promising young musician as she was hiking alone in a national park in eastern Canada, and authorities said she died Wednesday of her injuries.

The victim was identified as Taylor Mitchell, 19, a singer-songwriter from Toronto who was touring to promote her new album on the East Coast.

She was hiking solo on a trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia on Tuesday when the attack occurred. She was airlifted to a Halifax hospital in critical condition and died Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Coyotes, which also are known as prairie wolves, are found from Central America to the United States and Canada.

Wildlife biologist Bob Bancroft said coyote attacks are extremely rare because the animals are usually shy.

A .22 LR probably could have helped . . . At the deer camp I belong to, we've got a coyote mount of one that the oldest brother of three of our members shot six years ago.  Full body mount.  Damn thing is pretty big.  The teeth sure are.

They are getting pretty bad here in WV. I don't go up the hill or out on the ATV without one of my pistols, uh, I mean handguns for the politically correct.

I don't care if it's "allowed" or not, I don't go into the wild without the ability to use lethal force to defend myself and whoever I'm with.  My wife and I go camping a lot, and I refuse to be defenseless.  Stories like this one just confirm the wisdom of being armed when you venture into another animal's habitat.

They get up to around 70 lbs. around here. You can hear the pack that roams around here howl and yip some nights. We killed one, with me serving as a spotter, about a month ago on the farmland, which is a good clip from here. 'Bout a 400 yard shot with a 5.56mm, JHP near mid-afternoon. Called him out of the tree-line...

The one that is in the camp was killed by a .30-06 at about 40 yards.  One shot in the boiler room.  When I noticed that one of the rear legs was gone (probably from a trap that the 'yote had chewed itself out of), the guy who shot it was shocked.  It had apparently come down the hill like Wile E. Coyote with AcmeTM Jet Skis on.

I grew up on a farm that was 30 miles from anything like a police station, fire station,  hospital or grocery store.  We had coyotes everywhere.  My dad actually got a video of one snatching a chicken right out of our yard.  (He happened to be taping the dumb little rooster crowing.)

That said, I have never in my life heard of a coyote attacking a human.  Occasionally, there would be one assumed to be rabid that didn't run off fast enough...but it always ended up with a swift case of dead.

Of course, that may be WHY I've never heard of them attacking a human.  Where I grew up, if you saw them, you shot them.

When are all the liberal whackos going to figure out that humans just don't have any natural defenses?  If we allow the wild things to figure that out, they are going to eat us.  Duh!!  :thatsright:
