Comedian Soupy Sales dies at 83

Soupy Sales, the rubber-faced comedian whose anything-for-a-chuckle career was built on 20,000 pies to the face and 5,000 live TV appearances across a half-century of laughs, died Thursday. He was 83.
Sales died at Calvary Hospice in New York's Bronx district, said his former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher. Sales had many health problems and entered the hospice last week, Usher said.
At the peak of his fame in the 1950s and '60s, Sales was one of the best-known faces in the United States, Usher said.
"If President Eisenhower would have walked down the street, no one would have recognized him as much as Soupy," said Usher.
At the same time, Sales retained an openness to fans that turned every restaurant meal into an endless autograph-signing session, Usher said.

RIP sir. :bawl: Loved the slap-stick routines.

RIP...he was one funny guy.

Heard this on the radio this morning..... Sales was born in Franklin N.C. to the only jewish family in town. They ran a dry goods store and sold bedsheets to the KKK....hey, you gotta make a living.

Soupy's famous quote - "Be true to your teeth and they won't be false to you."
And the infamous bit when he "instructed" his audience to go into their parents' wallets and remove those "funny green pieces of paper with the picture of U.S. presidents on them and mail them to me."
That one went over like a fart in church.
But the pies. OMG, the pies. One stat I read said that he'd been hit with something like 20,000 pies in his career.

I thought it was pretty damned funny, myself.
Then there was this:

Make sure you check out the OTHER camera angle.

I can't see the vid due to the firewall, but I think it's the one where there was a topless stripper on the other side of the door.
Soupy's staff pulled this stunt on him in an effort to see how he'd handle it.
Kinda wonderin' how it ended up after the cameras went off! :lmao:
