Title: primitives discuss treats for Halloween

Oh my.

I had almost forgotten that the primitives' favorite holiday, Halloween, is almost upon us.  That's when all these 50-somethings, 60-somethings, dress up trying to act like little kids again.

COSTCO and Halloween

I always cringe when I distribute candies. I really wish that I could give something different, that will be sealed and pass inspection by the parents for any tampering.

Thus, I was glad to see a large jar at COSTCO containing small packets - covered with Halloween theme - containing pretzels. Similar to the ones that the airlines used to give free during flights.

A large jar of about 70 pretzels packets was selling at $6.89.

When franksolich lived in inhabited areas, he always gave out 50-cent pieces; I have no idea why, other than that it seemed a good idea at the time.

7. To stick in another child's eye?

Do NOT give out pointy sticks on Halloween. The little darlings will kill vampires with them.

19. Hey, little plastic spider rings and little stuff are great!

We found a party pack of these funny lip-shaped plastic whistles - more like squeakers the way they actually sounded. EVERY kid who grabbed one LOVED it! Including some teenagers who thought those little gizmos were cool! They headed back down the sidewalk with the whistles clenched between their lips - and squeaking!

Her Stoutness the silly primitive:

6. PS. For a kid to get a small pack in their trick-or-treat bag instead of high sugar candy is good.

Just saying.

5. That's really cool.

Baked and low in fat, yet tasty for the kiddies. In this day and age that's an awesome thing to see offered.

8. So many parents let the kids eat that night, then toss the candy when the kid isn't looking

So giving out all that candy feels like a waste of money.

I've purchased those Costco pretzels before.

16. If Swine Flu is such a concern, wouldn't it better to not participate at all?

Seriously, if that is the major concern, then avoiding contact with people completely seems to make more sense than anguishing over a non-existent threat.

This idea has been going around since I was trick-or_treating back in the 60's and it is complete and utter bollocks. A child is more likely to choke to death on a tater tot at the school cafeteria than come to any harm eating candy collected on Halloween.

18. Any chance Chimpy might be trick or treating in your neighborhood?

If he does, give him all the pretzels he wants.

The Halloween franksolich was 8 or 9 years old--I disremember my age, but it was the Halloween I went around dressed up as Henry R. Luce--he went and knocked on the door of a house where no kids had ever knocked before.

The house was inhabited by a crazy old woman, or allegedly crazy.

Upon seeing me, she acted very surprised, and let me inside.  She had me sit in the kitchen as she prepared a grilled-cheese sandwich for me, as a treat.  The stove was natural gas, and so I was a little leery, moving the chair to the furthest corner of the kitchen.

The cuisine was excellent, but it was all very sad anyway.  She talked a lot while she prepared the dish, but myself being deaf, I had no way of hearing her.  To this day, I am convinced I missed out on some good stuff.

When I was young enough to trick or treat, if someone had given me a pencil he'd soon need to visit the nearest emergency room to get it removed.

The local TV channel was reporting on the local showing of the "Walking with Dinosaurs" show, the person in the velocoraptor (actually Utahraptor) suit was messing with the lady reporter, pretty funny. But the costume was awesome. I could imagine if I dressed up for Halloween, I'd want one of those. Probably get shot for freaking people out though.

Trick-or-treat kids talk to one another. Word gets around very quickly. Any DUmmies giving out pretzels, or pencils, or toothbrushes are going to have a lonely evening. The day after Halloween they're going to have a lot of left over pretzels, or pencils, or toothbrushes.

My aunt always gave out full size candy bars, and I'm tempted to do the same.  We don't generally have a ton of kids coming to the house, so a bunch of those, and maybe a smaller package of fun size candies if they run out.

What mean person gives out non-candy on halloween  :bawl:

50-cent pieces would be a great hit, but you'd have to explain what they are to today's kids.

We had a nice old lady that gave out quarters which was quite a lot to kid in the early 70's.

I remember we would get candied apples.  We weren't allowed to eat them, and my mom would have to search all my stuff for razor blades.  And then all the Butterfingers disappeared.  Imagine that.  My mom's favorite candy.  I hated it when I would get candy corn, and the generic candy.  Or plastic spider rings.  Really?

I haven't had trick or treaters in years,  guess I will have to get something.

Last time I tried to spend a 50-cent piece, the old guy at the store refused to take it.  Said he had no way to account for it.
What kind of miserable bastard gives out pencils and pretzels on Halloween?  Typical DUmmies think they know whats best for everyone else.  I bet it doesn't stop them from sucking down chocolate bars every other day of the year.

I figured they'd hand out something that was made of hemp, like a hemp pencil or a hemp toothbrush.

Of course, the primitives would probably try and smoke it before they handed it out.

Halloween is but once a year, let the kids eat candy for christ sake.  Geesh.

The previous owners told us that Halloween in this neighborhood is HUGE.  We will get hundreds of kids (like 700).  All the neighbors sit out on their porches, they block off the street and have a party.

Ah, the good 'ol days!

I remember me and a coupla buds made a sling shot outa surgical tubing. One guy would hold one end the other would hold the other end. It reached clear across the street! The pouch was just big enough for an egg! We could launch 'em 4 frikkin' blocks! Much to our parents dismay! They tried to hide the eggs! Didn't work, as we had saved our money for just such an emergency! shit eatin' grin!

We spent part of the night launching eggs, the rest, running for our lives!

In my old subdivision....we had a ton of kids. Most everybody knew or sort of knew the kids, or the entire family.

The moms would sit on the front porch handing out candy while the dads took the kids around to all the houses.

There were two real short streets behind me that were dead ends one went downhill, and the other uphill...so the parents all got together at the first corner (one house over from me)...set up tables and lawn chairs with the candy for the kids and refreshments for the children.

People used to bring their kids into our neighborhood because it was large, safe and everyone gave out the "good stuff". Plus the couple that lived across and a couple of houses up from mine would do a haunted house. They have this breezeway between the house and garage with a pass door at the back of the garage. She would block off the front where the garage door is with a big tarp so the kids couldn't see in the garage and make the breezeway really dark and creepy with hanging down stuff.

She would wear a witch costume with her face all made up too.

The kids would walk down the breezeway, into the very low lit garage filled with spooky stuff, creepy music, and "smoke" from dry ice....and her husband would pop uo out of a fake coffin. He's always been really skinny and he'd be in a skeleton costume.

All the kids would scream bloody murder....including a few adults.. :uhsure:

We don't have trick or treaters where we live now.....

It's going to be interesting to see if trick or treat night gets moved to Friday night here. UT plays SC here at 7:30....so a lot of people won't be home. If Halloween falls on a Sunday night, trick or treat night gets moved to Saturday. We're going to our friends' subdivision on Friday night ....they are doing a street party for all of the kids and neighbors with adult food, and candy for the kids. It's a one street subdivision, and will be easy to do.
Their plan is to sit bowls of candy out on the front porches on Saturday night, none of the neighborhood kids will be out that night.

Fifty cents would have bought a whole sackful of goodies when I was a kid. Back then there was still such a thing as "penny candy": Mary Janes, peanut butter logs, Tootsie Rolls, root beer barrels, bubble gum, all kinds of stuff, all 1 cent each. Some two for a penny.

Heck, when Granny would give us a quarter we'd be all set for a sugar frenzy. :hyper:

Oh yeah....remember "dots"....they were little multicolored dots about the size of a redhot and stuck to narrow sheets of white paper?

Look at those clucking nanny do-gooders.  Pencils?  Really?  I hope it rains later that night so the TP is really fun to clean up.  Oh, also somebody had to chirp up and say "pretzels are no good, too much salt."

We go all out for Halloween.  We have a big spooky old house with a dancing ghost in the attic, visible through a large fan-light.  We also have a real ghost somewhere.  Our signature treat are boxes of Freihoffer's chocolate chip cookies.  The parents love 'em.  And, Gobux is exactly right about word of mouth spreading like wildfire.

I can't wait!

Pixie stix, yeah! Everybody loved those. Squirrel Nut Zippers. The little individual sticks of Chum Gum. Good eats.

Oh, and lest I forget, candy cigarettes and bubble gum cigars. Everything a growing kid needs. :-)

I knew they still made the candy cigars, some people pass them out when they have babies.  I didn't know that you could still get the candy cigarettes, though.

At Christmas....they came in a little colored plastic case and were chocolate wrapped in super thin white paper.

When we lived in Spokane, "Toots" always went all out! She did the wicked Witch thing too, including some gnarly teeth, green make-up, and a fake nose! She's great at it! She still travels into the city to take my grandkids out. Her latest thing is Medusa! She wants me to "invent a way to make those rubber snakes wriggle all over out of a wig. I figure I might be able to use a "stamp processor" and that wire that expands and contracts with how many volts you give it. It will be my paste of resistance!

Way back when, during my "egg slingshot" days, there was an old gal that cooked us peanut butter cookies! She would bake at least 12 dozen and be out by 8 pm. We always hit her place at least three times! After that she would tell us "that's enough! Save some for the other kids!". She made the best cookies I have ever eaten. I delivered her newspaper, too! The tips were always coooooookies!!!!!!!!!!! I actually delivered newspapers longer than I wanted, 'cause she told me I was the best paperboy she ever had! Man! Those were good cookies!!!

I only had three kids come to the door last year (they were together). Wonder if they will be back this year...
