Florida plan advises hospitals to bar some patients in event of severe flu pandemic

Florida health officials are drawing up guidelines that recommend barring patients with incurable cancer, end-stage multiple sclerosis and other conditions from being admitted to hospitals if the state is overwhelmed by flu cases.
The plan, which would guide Florida hospitals on how to ration scarce medical care during a severe flu outbreak, also calls for doctors to remove patients with poor prognoses from ventilators to treat those who have better chances of surviving. That decision would be made by the hospital.
The flu causes severe respiratory illnesses in a small percentage of cases, and patients who need ventilators and are deprived of them could die without the breathing assistance the machines provide.
In June, Florida Surgeon General Ana M. Viamonte Ros sent the draft guidelines — which had already undergone a series of internal revisions — to 16 state medical organizations for their feedback.
But the state has not yet publicized the guidelines or solicited input from the general public. The Florida Department of Health released a copy of the draft plan at the request of ProPublica, a nonprofit news organization, which provided it to the Sun Sentinel.

Someone else will get to decide if you are worth saving or not. Welcome to a hopey changey world.

The only part of this I blame on Hopey McChangey is all the hype for swine flu. This is basically a form of triage, in my view.

All the hospitals I work with have plans in place for handling the extra load, not how to reject certain patients.

Swine flu is killing far fewer than regular flu so far. It might be a bit worse for children but not as bad for seniors.
So the RATIONING begins.

Looks like the Dems are pushing what they accused the Republicans of..... just go away and die. Here it is in one's face.

Remember back a couple of years ago how the Democrats were running around screaming that we didn't have enough Flu Vaccine because of Bush? Did we have a huge flu pandemic then? Why isn't anyone running around blaming Obama for the swine flu vaccine shortage? You can't blame that on Bush because it has taken scientist only about 4 months to develop and make the vaccine. Why does Obama hate the American People? :p
-
The way I understand it, at least here, the H1N1 vaccine is being given to toddlers up to people age 49, and anyone in the health care field.
I wasn't planning on getting one...but it doesn't look like I would be given one even if I wanted it. I'm too old.

I was supposed to get a seasonal flu vaccine at work. They cancelled, and we were told that they had to because the gubmint has decreed that all the manufacturers must stop making the seasonal flu vaccine and make only the pig flu vaccine. Just wait....now we'll have a zillion people sick with the seasonal flu because not enough vaccine was available.
No ponies either. Ooooooobama really does hate us.

They were doing the seasonal flu vaccine at my office last month. My office has a broker, an office manager, and 2 admin assistants.
Of the four....3 got sick....2 enough that they were in bed for 3 days.
Prior to the shots being given...one of the ones who had to stay in bed, was giving me a hard time because I wasn't going to get one.
While I extended sympathy to her for being sick....I also did a nanny-nanny-boo-boo too....

YOU won't be getting one either, Big Boy! :hammer:

Hi,
Here is the letter I sent to our good FL governor.
regards,
5412
Dear Governor Crist,
I read in the paper where the state of Florida hospitals are discussing setting priorities if the system is overwhelmed with Swine Flu or some other similar problem. While I understand that triage is a common practice when the system becomes overwhelmed and the resources are limited, I do have a question.
How sir would you explain to a Florida resident, particularly seniors and spouses who may well be medal of honor winners, silver or bronze star winners, may well hold multiple purple hearts and have indeed defended our nation that they are being turned away because hospital beds are occupied by people who are in this country illegally?
Governor this is an issue you must speak out about and NOW! I have no problem with triage, it is fair and humane. At the same time it is immoral to deny any US citizen treatment and proper care because those resources providing care are being utilized to provide care for non-citizens; particularly those in this country illegally.
Enough is enough governor! Are you going to sell out the seniors in this state that hired you like senator Nelson? If you do not speak out and provide direction for the hospital board, and do it NOW, one must assume you are placing care for illegals in this country ahead of those who are citizens and hired you.
Regards,
-
So the RATIONING begins.
Death panels.
