It's that time of year again, when the field mice decide a life of warm comfort feasting on "toaster leavin's" is preferable to the cold stark reality of winter in northern Vermont. I've nailed two in the last two days. I have five more traps, hopefully the supply will outlast the mice.
I use the cheap Victor snap traps, and don't even bother to bait them. I just put a set trap in the pathway of where I have seen one running. They always follow the same routes, and they will just run right over the thing and spring it.
The dog gets very excited when she hears the snap and the squeaking. She's a pretty good mouser herself, but these mice seem to be smart enough to avoid places where she can get at them.

Offed one with a BB gun...got him right under the left armpit. He rolled over, twitched and--I shit you, not--2 little spurts of mousy blood came out. It was ****ing awesome.

I reuse the traps. They get all mousey and safe smelling after the first kill. The victims prefer them that way :-)

My wife keeps killing mice. I think she's on the fourth one on her computer, and on the third keyboard.

Our new dog seems very interested in rodents. She is a beagle and cute as can be. I'm hoping she'll terrorize the local rodent population :evillaugh:

If I let Oreo out, she'd clean up on the local rodent population. Squirrels, chipmunks, etc. Problem is the things called "cars."

I had a little wood rat problem out in California. I have one of those Crosman C-40 CO2 pellet pistols with the rotary magazine. Emptied 8 shots into one I caught out in the open on the back porch. They all penetrated too. Bastard was still able to scamper/crawl away.

I tend not to reuse the traps, but actually did recover a trap on this particular kill. I had two set to cover alternate adjacent routes of egress. The mouse hit the first trap, was caught by the leg, and scrambled into the second one, which got him across the neck and abdomen. I saved the one that broke his let and set it up again... Have not seen another mouse in two days now.
The first one was pretty bloody, so not even an option to save that one. It cracked the bugger right across the snout. The edge of the trap was actually in his mouth, with his lower jaw on the bottom, and his crushed little face on top. He was spurting blood for a couple minutes, and his beady little eyes were bugging out.

The body count has yet to mount down here on the NH Coast. Last year many body bags were filled. The snap traps, weapon of choice, rarely get re-used. Carcass and trap go into a plastic shopping bag thence into the trash after which the area is sprayed down with a solution of bleach and water (flea an tick prevention).
( I use peanut butter on the traps, let the condemed mouse have a hearty meal as with those traps it is sure to be ). I also have begun to enforce a no bird food storage zone in the garage.
I was forced to undertake this campaign when I took the 'Cuda ('68 Fastback) out and discovered a nest in the headliner. Not a pretty picture nor smell. We had lost our last mouser that winter and apparently things just got out of hand. Prior to losing the ***** gato there had never been a problem with mice inhabiting the garage.
There are also moth balls in onion bags all around the garage, so much so that the place is starting to smell like a maiden aunt's closet, but, so far, it is working .

We haven't had any yet, but we've gone from decently comfortable weather to a heavy frost this morning.
With 4 cats you wouldn't think we would have any even venture into the house......oh no....not our girls.
They corner the little suckers and then play with them. ::) We know they have one when the girls are all in a circle with high pitched squeaks coming from the center....
We usually end up putting on a pair of work gloves, picking it up and releasing it way down in the back yard.

I have come to the conclusion that 'catch and release' won't work. Had a neighbor who use to do it with skunks, drove them across town, a few days later I swear they were right back ready to go for another ride. :doh:

My cats have offed at least 20 mice/moles in the past month. I don't know where they are getting them. They did it all outside. I think they may be in the neighbor's shed because the door doesn't close all of the way. I DOUBLE DOG DARE a mouse to come in my house this year.

My kitter-kats don't go outside. The furthest out the get is the screen porch.
They were really protesting not being able to go out there today. They couldn't understand that just because the sun was out...it was too cold to have the door open.

The last time the beagle sighted a mouse she looked at me and ran up stairs. Said mouse was captured in a Yodel box for transport to the mulch pile but I suspect it was later the victim of a snap trap. Yet another novel capture was attempted with the shop vac. That too, resulted in "sudden mouse death", who knew they couldn't stand the sudden impact ?? ::)

so far, I've seen them only outside. I had foam sprayed in the joists this summer as a deterent to seal all potentially openings.
If I were ever to build, I'd do the same thing, but first line all the areas with metal screen. I hate mice... I have an irrational fear of them. I admit it.

Mice and lizards (we have blue tailed skinks all over the place outside) don't bother me too much.
Spiders are not good.
Snakes terrify me. We had a couple of baby copperheads in the pool back in the spring. Those little f's can swim.... :o
