Title: Boy Floats Away In Balloon
Post by: IassaFTots on October 15, 2009, 01:46:55 PM
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A 6-year-old boy is floating over northeastern Colorado in a homebuilt balloon and authorities are racing to try and rescue him.

The balloon, in the shape of a flying saucer is covered in foil and filled with helium. It has a compartment for a passenger underneath. It lifted the boy into the air near Fort Collins Thursday morning after the balloon became untethered at the boy's home.

The father and son had apparently been working on the aircraft for some time.

Fort Collins police and other authorities have been alerted and Airtracker 7 has launched in an effort to locate the boy.

Airtracker 7 located the craft at 12:35 p.m. at about 8,000 feet in Weld County. It appeared to be slightly tilted.

It's on CNN HLN right now.  Weird.

If you'll hold my hand we'll chase your dream across the sky
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
Balloon...
Up, up, and away.....

I just keep repeating HOLY CRAP.  I just read that that dang balloon can get up to 10000 feet, and they are worried it may interfere with Air Traffic at Denver Intl.

HOLY CRAP?

Oxygen and THE COLD at that altitude could be a real problem, not just a 747 whizzing by.

It's on Fox now.....it's going at a rate of 25mph!!!

According to Shep Smith...they have no idea how they are going to get him down.

Shep Smith just said authorities are hoping that maybe the little boy accidentally untethered it and is hiding somewhere on the ground....but it's not looking hopeful. I guess praying would be a better word.

Dear God, please watch over that little boy....

I suppose a chopper doesn't fly that high?

The 10K foot level is ASL, not AGL.  Right now they only have him 3500-4000 feet AGL.  Weather is in the mid-60's so even at that altitude, he's not in immediate danger of freezing or hypoxia.

Falling out or crashing, OTOH....

Apparently there is a chopper flying along side of it....well about 2 miles away actually....they are afraid to get too close to it, because of the winds created by the helicopter....

Get to da choppa.

They can't get a helicopter near to it, because the rotation of the blades will suck the balloon into them...that's what some astronaut guy just said.....

the balloon builder is the boy's father....he is a "weather chaser" and this was meant to be a type of weather balloon....

the kid's mother is going to kill the father.....

Quote
The 6-year-old boy who was thought to be in a mylar balloon speeding high across Colorado Thursday was on the ABC series 'Wife Swap,' according to multiple reports.

Falcon Heene is the son of Richard and Mayumi Heene of Ft. Collins, Colo. His parents are storm chasers, and their chaotic parenting style was criticized by their swap family.

Richard and Mayumi Heene of Ft. Collins, Colo. have two other boys, Bradford and Royo.

The family was on the show because of their risk-taking ways. According to the ABC 'Wife Swap' website, the family  sleeps in their clothes so they can leap from bed and run after a storm at any given moment.

The site also describes the balloon that sounds like the one being tracked Thursday.

"When the Heene family aren't chasing storms, they devote their time to scientific experiments that include looking for extraterrestrials and building a research-gathering flying saucer to send into the eye of the storm," says the site.

"At this point, we are thinking that he did not fall out of the balloon and is somewhere on the ground," Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Eloise Campanella said. "The basket itself was not breached. It does not look like he fell out of it, but again, this is all conjecture."

If the sheriffs cleared the home they have some 'splainin to do.

I saw this family on Wife Swap and came away thinking these parents were friggen nuts. I think the dad has a bad case of ADHD and a terrible temper. When I first found out it was this family I immediatly felt it was a hoax, even before they found out the kid was not in the balloon.  The dad is a total ass.

They were interviewed on The Today Show this morning.

The father explained the kid's remark.

Apparently, about 30 reporters persuaded the kid to re-enact how he climbed up into the garage and hid, while someone filmed him doing it "for a show".

One of the older brothers was with the kid and the reporters, and the father walked in on it happening.

He didn't seem too happy about the reporters asking the kid to " climb up in the garage trusses" .....probably wasn't a real safe thing to do.

According to the father...that was the "show" the kid was referring to.

Sorry, but I saw part of that TODAY clip--right after the kid barfed.

Daddy has a look in his eyes like he knows he's gonna be spending a little "up close and personal" time with Bubba down in Canon City.  And given the FAA involvement and flight disruptions around DIA, methinks there might be some federal involvement.

Says I?  GOOD.

I only saw a later clip of it...I didn't see the kid throwing up...just heard about it.

I agree that it needs more investigation....especially after I heard late yesterday that the family won't be billed for anything.

Which the father probably already knew.....

There's talk of potential fines and restitution being levied against the parents. Someone made a "false statement to officials" as it has become clear that the parents and one of the siblings KNEW that the 6 year old was at home, safe and sound. I think that the mother also made a false 911 report. I hope that they get their just rewards.

I rest my case! This guy is a danger to his boys, pure and simple! What's the age of the oldest, 8? What a good idea! "Hey boys look, we're going to see a tornado up close and personal!" " Never mind that a cat 4 can throw a semi around like a Tonka Toy and we're in a POS SUV!"

Sheesh what an idiot! He needs some Psyche eval! To say nothing of a mother that would go along with this, though I doubt she has any choice after watching his temper on Greta. It's been my experience in domestics, that the weaker sex will actually put themselves in danger to please the abuser.

Pretty sure Children Services needs to get involved with this family.

If they had the kids in the car while chasing tornadoes there is a possibility of child endangerment. I think the sheriff should have investigated that some more before turning it over to CPS.  Once CPS gets their hooks into a family, they generally screw things up.

Since this seems to be the only thing CNN's Headline News Channel thinks is important enough to report on today, here's an update.  Daddy Dumbass might be in trouble with the Feds, too.

"We do anticipate at some point in the future, there will be some criminal charges filed with regards to this incident," Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said.

"We certainly want to talk to FAA officials and federal officials to see if perhaps there aren't additional federal charges that would be more appropriate in the circumstances than what we're able to do locally," he said.

If they had the kids in the car while chasing tornadoes there is a possibility of child endangerment. I think the sheriff should have investigated that some more before turning it over to CPS.  Once CPS gets their hooks into a family, they generally screw things up.

I remember watching them on wife swap and wondering when CPS would be called that is how utterly crazy the mom and dad are. I highly doubt it is just because of the hoax that they called CPS.

My sentiments, exactly. There is the possibility of child endangerment, but read my new sig line.
