Title: Technical Question About Moles
Post by: SSG Snuggle Bunny on October 09, 2009, 09:12:57 AM
I've had a couple of moles banned from my home address.

My current mole is doing quite well. So well in fact that some of the all-star primitives have PM'ed my mole with glowing commentary. Yet, I have made sure to use my current character only while I'm at work because I've been afraid my home IP is on some sort of list.

I want to post this weekend but I'm afraid of my home IP getting busted.

Is this concern justified?

Would they notice old posts from 1 IP while noticing posts from a second IP or is an IP address only detectable from where you're logged in at the moment?

You know, you got me, sir.

Since I never know, I'm always very careful to have my mole log on to Skins's island ONLY at the personal computer of a computer expert eight miles away, never from my own.

It's an interesting question.

I have no idea. I do know that they seem to pay attention to the sites you visited before DU, and where you came from.

Moved to this forum to see if we can get illumination from computer experts.

I dunno. Even way back when I used geocities I knew where the visitors were coming from, it gave a URL link.

So be careful.

MSB, it kind of depends on HOW they banned the previous moles. People are often banned by user name, email address, and IPs used. They may have chosen all or some of them. The best way is to sign on through some proxy, like AOL or MSN, etc. Typically, as an Admin, I look for proxy IPs when a member signs up as we receive an email for every new member. When I see one, it alerts me that they might be problematic.

If I click on a link from the DUmp that takes me to Skin's Island then this site will show up as the referring url, right?  But if I have DU bookmarked and use that, will it just show my IP without any referring url?

Use a proxy server. It hides your IP address.

Go HERE (http://www.youhide.com/), enter the URL you want in the Enter a URL to visit securely box, click Proxify and viola! You can go to most sites and your IP will be hidden.

DU will have tools to "track IP" - so you can list the posts that come from that IP.

Skins etc essentially click a control and it displays posts made from that IP , and who made them.

So - if you've been banned on that IP with another user(s) and you post from it they will ALL show up.

If you want your mole to live long and prosper - use a proxy. They will still notice that your mole is connecting from a different IP ; but it won't be the IP that's associated with the dearly departed.

Unless you have aroused someone's suspicions there you're fine even without a proxy.  They don't check IP addresses routinely, but if your posting name, signup date (especially after a mole has been busted that particular day) or posting style seems suspect by a member who alerts or a Mod they will.

It's been several months since my last effort and with my writing abilities I have a mole with complete history, family, job (although that may be a give away) etc

Like I mentioned in the OP, I've gotten some A-listers to PM me in sympathetic tones. In a couple more weeks I should have 1000 posts then I'll drop $5 for donor status.
