I just had an interesting conversations with one of my bosses about guns.
He is an avid hunter (hardcore Republican voting fundie) and had shown me a cartoon of a deer sniffing at a giant mouse trap. The quip underneath said that this is what hunters would be reduced to using once Obama had taken all their guns.
I asked him if he had heard anything serious about Obama wanting to take any guns away. He had to admit that he hadn't but he did "know" that they were going after ammunition. I said that I had heard rumors to that effect and that I had heard reports about sporting goods stores and others were having a problem keeping bullets on hand, but was there any real evidence to show that something was going on other than people stocking up because of rumors.
It seems that he hasn't researched it, but he's sure that there's something to it because he "knows how Democrats are" and that it would have been even worse if Hillary had been elected. I told him that I had researched it and couldn't find any reliable information about anyone trying to take guns or ammo and was just wondering if he knew about something that I had missed.
I know that I'll never convince this man that Obama and the Democrats aren't out to take their guns, but it does show how they are so eager to latch onto a rumor and scare themselves silly without every trying to get to the truth of the matter.

2. Bet him money.
Bet him money that Obama will not even try to take away his firearms.
Easy money if he bites.

16. Yeah, no sense not making a buck off this
Get specifics from him: The how, the what, and the when. Most especially the when of this confiscation. Six months? A year? Five years? Write it down to his satisfaction, date the chit, have him initial it, and put some money on it: Twenty bucks seems a fair amount. Wait until the requisite time has passed (put a reminder on your cell phone or something), and go collect. After you have the money in your pocket, ask him if he'd like to double the bet for another three months or six months or whatever.

4. Probably heard about the microstamping..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firearm_microstamping
There are proposals in 5 or 6 states to implement this technology, which could double (or more, depending on caliber) the price of ammunition, and would necessitate the stopping of the practice of 'reloading' to have any real value, after a majority of weapons were so equipped. It would also necessitate making barrels, firing pins, and extractors regulated items. (Imagine having to get a registration tag for every tire you put on your car so that the police can trace your car by the tires.)

5. He didn't mention anything about this. He is just convinced that Democrats in general, and Obama in particular, want to take guns away from the general public.

7. *nod* it's like a game of 'I have a secret'
Person to person to person, the cause for alarm mutates, explodes, goes sideways, etc.
If you put together statements made by then-Senator Obama, with votes he made in the Senate, quotes from speeches in Chicago years ago.. then add in the support for renewal of the 'assault weapons ban' on change.org then whitehouse.org (since removed from the whitehouse site), statements to the same effect from SoS HRC, DHS Sec Napolitano, AG Holder.. it's understandable how one could expect support for more regulation from the administration.
Good news for folks like your boss, though, is that the administration has seen the writing on the walls, and realized that they have much bigger fish to fry, and the political capital they would have to spend to enact more restrictive gun legislation would cost more than it's worth.

9. As well as our attorney general saying publicly he wanted to ban a bunch of guns
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Holder
When questioned about weapons regulations during a news conference to announce the arrest of Mexican drug cartel members, Holder stated that the Obama administration would seek to reinstitute the expired Assault Weapons Ban, which he strongly supports.
Only the current form of the proposed AWB is much more restrictive.

Then there are bills relating to firearms in congress considered anti gun...

But the proposed new AWB back around election time was a the big doozey, it allowed Holder to basically ban any gun he wanted to, and he publicly came out saying he was strongly in favor, and did not agree with the Heller case decision.

12. Parlty it is the NRA... but I highly recommend Deer Hunting with Jesus...a good book and his chapter on guns will 'splain some of the errors our side has made.
After readying that and doing a lot of thinking... we need gun control, translation, we need to keep guns away from those who should not have them... and the most avid hunter or gun owner will agree to that. But after that... the words themselves have been twisted, to the point that they have lost any original meaning and that alone makes it impossible to deal with.

13. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Limbaugh, Beck, etc. promote a total lie on air, i.e., "Obama wants to limit ammo," so every peabrained nutjob heads to the gun store to stock up on ammo, wiping out almost the entire supply.
The next wave of ammo purchasers go to the gun store and notice the shortage and think that Beck and company were right, that Obama IS limiting ammo.

14. Obama isn't out to take away guns but there are a lot of Democrats who'd like to.
Many of them are right here on DU.
I fully expect to be snitched on for saying this because I've been reading posts here for a couple years but that's okay...I've discovered the 'big tent' is a 'big lie' and I am NOT a freeper or a republican, just a longtime Democrat who takes the Bill of Rights very seriously.

18. Tell him the ammo shortage is over
Plenty out there now and it was the idiots hoarding ammo believing the crap the RW & NRA spread that caused it. Probably the same idiots who stocked up for Y2K.
And they are still spreading this crap. On billboards for a local gun show it says "Get your guns while you still can".
As a liberal gun owner the stuff I hear spouted pisses me off. I was ticked over the weekend at a local IDPA match when a couple of safety officers decided to free lance the reading of the stage descriptions throwing in crap about socialists and ACORN. If they do it again next season I will bitch to the match director & to the national organization. Course I may be told to go take a hike since most of them are probably RW.

Liberals want to ban you
Thats the difference with conservatives

It's still hard to even get .22LR in the peoples republic of kalifornia. If you can find it, you will pay four times what it was a year ago. Larger Calibers are in short supply. The only thing plentiful and still the same price is 12GA game loads.
-
Yeah they are not banning guns :mental:
California has banned anything in .50 cal plus most assault rifles by name and some handguns.
Its almost impossible to get a permit to own a gun in NYC
Chicago has a ban on handguns right now and a case is in the SCOYUS to see if that ban is legal.
Yeah they aren't banning anything.****ing lying bastards.

I bought Arguing With Idiots yesterday. Beck has a great, confusing flow chart about how to get a concealed handgun permit in NYC.
