Title: DU Religious Survey
Post by: Celtic Rose on September 29, 2009, 10:06:38 AM
As usual, we have plenty of religious mocking and bickering in the comments.  Atheism beats out all other religions.

15. Christian atheist

One who accepts the social teachings of an itinerant teacher and healer of the late Roman Empire, but who does not believe in fairy tales.

If you are atheist, you are not Christian.  Sorry buddy.

65. Oh for god sakes why is it always the christians who complain about everything?

FTR, I used to be one. I'm so ****ing sick and tired of the requested special treatment and constant whining that I can no longer associate myself with them.

If christians didn't separate themselves into so many disparate groups, then we probably wouldn't have as many wars among the different factions.

For ****'s sake, answer the god damn poll as it was posted or post your own.

In response to a member asking why Christian was divided into 3 options, then in response to him...

42. I understand why some atheist may feel the need

Edited on Mon Sep-28-09 05:06 PM by demwing
to denigrate the religious, because so many of the religious in the outside world have an unabashed hate for atheists.

I apologize for the behavior of those out there, who hold in one hand a flag of peace and forgiveness, and in the other a flag of hate and vengeance. They suck.

But is that the case here?

Do atheists really need to be rude to the religious on DU?

Yes, by all means, be rude to the religious if they don't post on our precious website.   ::)

43. Had a hard time on this one...

Do I accept the Old & New Testaments? Yes. But I also accept the Book of Enoch, Apocalypse of Peter, etc to name a few.

Doctrine wise....I reject every single doctrine and decree of the Ecumenical Councils.

Even though I chose "Christian Other" I have hard time with the word "Christian", it depends on how its defined. I renounce the version that is incorporated with much bloodshed and politics.

By most "standard" Christian religions I would be classified as a certified heretic.

If you don't accept any of the doctrine of the Ecumenical Councils, then yes you are a Heretic.  Why would somebody bother calling themselves Christian if they disagree with all of the beliefs of Christianity?

Ah, lamenting for the good 'ol days of the Inquisition. I'd like nothing better than to get these pukes to renounce their sins. (by any means possible)

Um, Jesus lived in the earliest part of the Roman Empire.  Which if you don't understand history at all, you probably are not understanding other things very well either.

Hrm...  I'm a Baptist, but when I look at a Lutheran, a Catholic, a Presbyterian, a Charismatic or a Methodist, I see only Christians, not "disparate groups" or "different factions."

Non-theism has strong atheists, weak atheists, strong agnostics, weak agnostics, "Christian atheists," etc., so they are no less guilty of having "disparate groups" and "different factions" than anyone else.

Where I live....it seems as if there's a Baptist church on darn near every corner.

I was brought up to have respect for other people's religious views. I grew up in the Episcopal Church and when I was in youth group, our priest would take us to other churches to see how people worshipped. Course, back then in the mid 60's there wasn't much in Des Moines Iowa, but Protestant, Catholic and Judism. He always told us, the most important thing was to believe in God and His existence and that he was always there for us...but that we didn't all have to worship the same exact way to believe.

I'm Catholic now.

I can't tell you how many times I have been told I was a "heathen" because I'm Catholic......and have the other person say - "I'm a CHRISTIAN...."

 :huh?:

You just can't get in a discussion with people like that....

I don't agree with many of the tenets of the Catholic Church (e.g. praying to Mary, Church hierarchy, communion being anything other than a symbol, etc.), but these are secondary issues.  Your faith in Jesus Christ as God and Savior makes you Christians and I embrace you as brothers and sisters.

70 votes later and the tally hasn't changed much:

Poll result (508 votes)
Agnostic   (97 votes, 19%)
Athiesm   (169 votes, 33%)
Buddhism   (24 votes, 5%)
Catholicism   (54 votes, 11%)
Protestant   (50 votes, 10%)
Christian Other   (35 votes, 7%)
Hinduism   (1 votes, 0%)
Judaism   (9 votes, 2%)
Muslim   (4 votes, 1%)
Other   (65 votes, 13%)

And these clowns think they represent the mainstream of America?

That's how it should be.

My cousins grew up in a Christian church that didn't allow them to play cards, go to school dances, and obviously no swearing, drinking or smoking. They were forever in church. To say that they rebelled is an understatement!

My aunt was forever telling my dad that my brother and I were going to go to hell because of his(Dad's) behavior and our lack (according to her beliefs) of religious "training".  ::)  We're the 2 that ended up pretty normal...well...normal being a relative term... :-)

The point is....we should all RESPECT how another one worships God....it is not up to any of us to tell another how their relationship with God should be or that the way they practice their religion is right or wrong.

God doesn't care how you worship him....just that you do.

Plus, I love the Catholic Church's devotion to protecting the lives of the unborn.   :-)
