Lawmaker's bill would help poor with broadband costs

New legislation in the U.S. Congress would expand a program that helps low-income people who get telephone service also get broadband service.

Representative Doris Matsui, a California Democrat, introduced the Broadband Affordability Act on Thursday. The bill would require the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to establish a broadband assistance program for low-income people by expanding the Universal Service Fund's (USF) Lifeline Assistance program.

The Lifeline Assistance program, which now provides discounts of up to US$10 a month for telephone service, has a budget of about $800 million a year. Matsui's proposal would add an additional $100 million, a spokeswoman for the congresswoman said.

"To fully close the digital divide we must address the affordability of broadband services for lower-income households," Matsui said in a statement. "Although these households may have some options for broadband access, they are underserved if none of these options are affordable."

Ann Coulter was right--liberalism is a luxury the average American can't afford.

I was just debating a liberal friend of mine on facebook a couple of weeks ago about the healthcare issue and told him that if we continue down this path we will be paying for shit like broadband for the poor.  He said "it won't happen"

They will do what they did with cash for clunkers then. Double it so more people can get in on it.

Like the "broadband in every school" initiative...the Libs will simply add yet another tax onto our already overtaxed telephone and cell phone bills.

Not after all the DUmmies apply for assistance to get a service they obviously already have and can afford.

Their goal is to give everyone everything they need and take all of their paycheck. What system of Government does that remind you of?

Of course, what are they going to do when "da gub'mint" decides they don't "NEED" plasma televisions, spinning rims on their POS cars, iPhones, and X-Boxes, and instead of food stamps for the purchase of steak and lobster at the local Stop N Shop, decides they should have "healthy" low-fat gruel?

On several boards I participate on, someone says that they were talking, or having dinner, or shopping, or somesuch with a "liberal friend."  I really don't think I could have a liberal friend, a true lefty.  I wouldn't want to spend precious free time with someone who made me angry and uncomfortable.  So, I never get this.  Am I just a misanthrope?  Narrow-minded and mean in some way?  I have a bobolink sort of BIL but we don't get involved with him.  I'd rather spend time with my SIL who says "Obama is the scourge of the Earth."

Am I missing out on great times or something?  What's with these "liberal friends?"

I have several liberal friends (not DU crazy liberal) and I think I would be missing out if I didn't have them as friends. Sure they piss me off on occasion but they are good people.

Only people in a first world western nation could bitch about being poor , when they clearly have a dwelling that has electricity and a computer. FFS.

These idiots have no idea what real poverty is like.
