Title: poll: can you rattle off your license-plate number without looking?
Post by: franksolich on September 25, 2009, 06:49:00 PM
Can you recite your license-plate number on demand, or do you have to go look at it first?

I've never paid attention to license-plate numbers I've had, as there was nothing unusual about them, nor was there ever an incident (traffic ticket or accident) demanding that I recite it.

If I would need to know my license-plate number, I would have to get up and go outside and actually look at it.

I know my father paid attention to such details, because after the family moved to Nebraska from New York, and ultimately lived in four different counties, while the first part of the license-plate number changed, reflecting the county in which the family lived, the last three digits, in all four counties, were always "485".

License plates--and this was before a thing such as "personalized plates" evolved--were usually given out at random, but apparently the paternal ancestor had some clout somewhere, so as to always get "485".

I don't think "485" had any particular significance to him; it was probably just that it was the first number randomly given to him upon his arrival in Nebraska, and since it seemed a good commonsensical number, he stuck with it.  Not in license-plates, but in other things, I'm like my own father in that way.

Every time I applied for a parking pass at college, and now at work, I have to write down my plate number on the application. I have it memorized now.

But I still write it on my insurance card so in case I forget it, I don't have to run out to the parking lot to refresh my memory.

No, not on any of the 3.  Back when you could choose to keep the same plate number for years, I knew mine, but they change too often now.

After 10 years of one license, we have to change ours, so right about the time I had mine memorized, I just had to change.

We used to have to give it if we used a credit card to buy gas, now with "pay at the pump", it doesn't ask. I have no idea of what mine is now....

Yeah, in Missouri you can get a specialty plate (mine's US Army, Retired), but then they also permit you to have your own "vanity" plate at the same time, meaning you get your own "number".

Mine's "Euphr1"

On the motorcycle it's "Euphr"

Years ago in Illinois, when plates were picked up every year from local banks (before the multi year plates with stickers) the first couple of letters were based on the bank. For instance CV was "Coal Valley Bank" and FB was "Farmers Bank"

What's scary is that I know the plates for every car I've owned since 1985 (my first truck).

I am uber-geek.  I also remember phone numbers for places I haven't lived since 1973.  But don't ask me what I had for dinner two nights ago.
