MIDDLEVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) - A West Michigan woman says the state is threatening her with fines and possibly jail time for babysitting her neighbors' children.

Lisa Snyder of Middleville says her neighborhood school bus stop is right in front of her home. It arrives after her neighbors need to be at work, so she watches three of their children for 15-40 minutes until the bus comes.

The Department of Human Services received a complaint that Snyder was operating an illegal child care home. DHS contacted Snyder and told her to get licensed, stop watching her neighbors' kids, or face the consequences.

That’s coming from a blue state, Michigan, which is a union friendly state with high unemployment rate. Don’t they have to worry than some woman babysitting neighbor kids? Even licensed day care centers are atrocious and crime has happened there. What's the difference?

They're missing out on some license fees and taxes. Of course they're pissed that they don't get every little dime that they believed is owed them.

When you have to make laws to counteract existing poorly written laws, there's a serious problem going on.

I guess that means that every teenager in MI, who wants to earn some extra money, must become a lincensed child care worker to do so!
What is WRONG here?

I would  rather trust the recommendations of friends for a sitter, than to trust a government bureaucrat issuing a license.

IRVING TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Each day before the school bus comes to pick up the neighborhood's children, Lisa Snyder did a favor for three of her fellow moms, welcoming their children into her home for about an hour before they left for school.

Regulators who oversee child care, however, don't see it as charity. Days after the start of the new school year, Snyder received a letter from the Michigan Department of Human Services warning her that if she continued, she'd be violating a law aimed at the operators of unlicensed day care centers.

No, because they've chased everyone of any means out already.

I'm sure it would be fine if the kids were just dropped off at the bus stop and left to stand around outside.  :banghead:

Watching the kids in the front yard before the bus comes is now a crime of some kind?

You don't know how close to the truth you are as this was on Fox News this morning. The lady told the news that the state had told her that the kids can't even be in her garage or it's a violation. She asked about what if it was raining? The state told her that the parents should buy their kids umbrellas. She asked about winter, the state told her that the kids should bundle up. All in all, the state of Michigan would rather see the kids out in the cold and snow than to see them safe and warm. The lady also stated that she wasn't charging the other parents for baby sitting.
