Let the panda die out 'with dignity', says BBC expert Chris Packham
Source: TimesOnline
The BBC wildlife expert Chris Packham has questioned the millions spent trying to save the giant panda from extinction and suggested that the bamboo-eating bear should be allowed to die out "with a degree of dignity".
The zoologist, who has replaced Bill Oddie as a presenter on BBC's Springwatch, risked criticism from wildlife conservationists in an interview with the Radio Times in which he describes the giant panda as a "T-shirt animal" on which too much conservation money is wasted.
"Here is a species that, of its own accord, has gone down an evolutionary cul-de-sac. It's not a strong species," he said.
"I reckon we should pull the plug. Let them go, with a degree of dignity."

I wanted to post the same story from the NY Times but I can't find it now. He also said the tiger will be extinct in 15 years. I don't know if the purpose of his comments were a slap in the back of the head wakeup call, or if he really believes they should be allowed to die, but either way, it is very depressing.
When will we value nature more than money??
Too many posts to bring over so I settled on Monk who seems to have missed the point about darwinism.

14. Jeez not a lot of love on this thread. And why is anyone listening to a BBC
wildlife 'expert' who's basically advocating
social darwinism for Pandas.
It is human beings who have reduced the natural
habitat for the Giant Panda to the point that
they have to be reared in zoos to save them.
So now that we have destroyed their ecological
niche that sustained them for millennia they should
be allowed to die off with dignity.
What a prick this Peckham is.

These horrible humans must be the same sumbitches who killed off the Woolly Mammoth. Is there no end to the greed??

Pandas: Not to be confused with Teri Schiavo.

I don't get it. The DUmmies are such staunch supporters of Darwinism, then adapt or die should be good enough for the animals of whatever type. Now if cows, chickens or pigs become threatened, then there's a problem.

If there was money to be made from panda farming there would be no shortage of them.

See. If they would just legalize Panda penises for infertility treatments, then they would be raised for that purpose and we'd be overrun with Pandas. Oh wait, maybe there's a problem with that scenario. :lmao:
-
Maybe there should be some sort of "end of life" panel for the Panda.

I wonder how they taste roasted...

That is SO true. Of course they'd be dumbed down over the generations. The chickens and cows we farm raise these downs are downright the stupidist animals ever. Or close.

African, or European?

I happen to like pandas.... :shucks:

:o
I think you just captured the difference between liberals and conservatives. Libs want everything handed to them, where nobody has to work for anything. Where does this lead?
You're a genius.

If that were the case, they've have offed themselves by now for not being the strongest of the species. Like Global Warming, and pretty much everything else, they agree with Darwinism only when it benefits their stupidly inane arguments.

Yeah, esspecially the ones that have gone broke. I never did care to much for Sardines and now I like them even less.
And todays bible lesson is from the King Obama version of The DUmmie Bible.
From the book of Obama, first chapter, first verus.
"Man shall earn his daily bread from the sweat of someone elses brow."

...and who tried to help the farmers in the valley? A senator by the name of Demint from the other side of the country. Who voted against it? Their own f'n senator by the name of Feinstein. Should tell them a lot about how they're viewed by their own senators.

Exactly my friend!

If it's good enough for uninsured DUmmies, it's good enough for pandas.
