WASHINGTON — Six months after it announced its strategy for Afghanistan, the Obama administration is sending mixed signals about its objectives there and how many troops are needed to achieve them.

The conflicting messages are drawing increasing ire from U.S. commanders in Afghanistan and frustrating military leaders, who're trying to figure out how to demonstrate that they're making progress in the 12-18 months that the administration has given them.

Adding to the frustration, according to officials in Kabul and Washington, are White House and Pentagon directives made over the last six weeks that Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, not submit his request for as many as 45,000 additional troops because the administration isn't ready for it.

<SNIP>

Three officers at the Pentagon and in Kabul told McClatchy that the McChrystal they know would resign before he'd stand behind a faltering policy that he thought would endanger his forces or the strategy.

"Yes, he'll be a good soldier, but he will only go so far," a senior official in Kabul said. "He'll hold his ground. He's not going to bend to political pressure."

On Thursday, Gates danced around the question of when the administration would be ready to receive McChrystal's request, which was completed in late August. "We're working through the process by which we want that submitted," he said.

This is gonna get REAL interesting, REAL fast.

This is such crap.

Take the leash off the dogs and let them actually fight to win.

Stop tying their hands with these ridiculous ROEs.

It'd be over in 6 months.

My respect for Gates just went past zero on its way to deep negative numbers.

Don't forget who holds Gates' leash.  Gates deserves NO respect, his "master" deserves less....

Gates has devolved into a typical liberal bureaucrat kiss ass.

Obama isn't going to send the 40,000 troops McChrystal needs, because his liberal loon base wants to withdraw from Afghanistan.

Gates isn't going to support his field commander.

McChrystal should resign, retire, and then come home and spend a couple of hours on the Rush Limbaugh Show spilling the beans on how Obama and Gates compromised the mission.

Obama cares more about non-existent global warming than he does about Afghanistan. Just listen to his speech he gave to the U.N.
If anything the climate has been cooling the last decade. And his speech was filled with lies.

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_092209/content/01125107.member.html

Rush believes the troop surge requested by General McCrystal was leaked by liberals, while one of his callers believes it was leaked by McCrystal himself so he can get the troops he needs.

Whatever is the case, Obama doesn't want to do this. He doesn't even like to hear the word victory, what makes you think he has the stomach for Afghanistan? Either way Obama faces political suicide. If he commits more troops, he will anger his liberal base. If he does not commit more troops he will anger moderates and conservatives.
Obama is a liberal and liberals hate victory. Liberals want to see America lose wars, because to them American victory equates with
"American Imperialism".
This commitment to add 40k more troops to Afghanistan is the most important executive decision of our time and America elected a wimpy liberal to make this decision. Does Obama have the balls or stomach to make a strong decision?

Obama is an a--hole, who is basically shitting on every effort we have made and are making on the war on terror.
He's going to shut down gitmo, witch hunt the CIA, and has no stomach for a troop surge in Afghanistan.
Did America elect a unicorn or a President?
Liberals have as much respect for the United States and the Executive office of the President as they do for Monica Lewinsky's dress.

Prepare to take it to another level:
