Obama: 'I was black before the election'
NEW YORK (AFP) – US President Barack Obama on Monday poked fun at claims that racism was behind fierce opposition to his ambitious political agenda, joking that "I was actually black before the election."
It was the latest attempt by Obama to tone down the debate, after former US president Jimmy Carter commented that much of the conservative fury directed at Obama's health care plans was motivated by racism.
Obama said on the "The Late Show" with David Letterman on CBS that the fact he was elected as America's first African-American president at all was a more accurate indicator of wider race relations in the country.
"I think it's important to realize that I was actually black before the election."
"One of the things that you sign up for in politics is that folks yell at you," the president said, in a taping for the show due to air later on Monday.
"Whenever a president tries to bring about significant changes, particularly during times of economic unease, there is a certain segment of the population that gets very riled up."

5. Yes, he was elected
by a pretty wide margin at that. But in those 59 million people who did not vote for him there is a vocal and nasty racist crowd. They are the one with the racist signs. They are the ones who elect the Joe Wilsons. Rush Limpballs is one of them. He was a racist before Obama won and he is still a racist.
Obama's right in that his election shows an indicator of wider race relations in the country but it hasn't changed for a lot of people and those are the ones who are making the noise. They may be in the minority but they don't seem to be going anywhere or getting over the election of the first Black President.
Yep that 54% was a real landslide. :whatever:
I am fine that we elected a black president its that we elected a socialist democrat that irks me.
You wanna see some real racism just bring up Condi Rice to the DUmp monkeys and it will sound like a KKK meeting.

We all knew that ZeroBama and we didn't care, your policies were what we voted against, and that is what we're against now. Point of fact, for you, 0Bama, your collection of worshipers were using the race card during the campaign much like they are doing now.

If he were all white, instead of half-white, he wouldn't have even been in the primaries, let alone President now.

Are you implying that racism is what got him elected?

Affirmative action certainly played a major role in it.

I don't think AA played a part. I would say that white liberal guilt did, black racism/favoritism did, people tired of President Bush did, and the Republicans running McCain played a big part. So did the MSM in not vetting 0Bama.

From the moment he took the stage at the 2004 convention he was viewed as the perfect stealth candidate.
Any scrutiny would immedietly be met with the same charge, racisim.

Yup. When I saw him speak then, I had this awful feeling in my stomach that we'd be seeing him again--and it would not be for the better.

Though he won't release the records, I believe he was also Kenyan before the election, when it meant getting an advantage in getting into the college of his choice.

...and his legal name is still Barry So-wet-toe or something like that.
His color does bother me.....It's RED to the core.

What is this Aff-GAN-ee-stan you speak of? Are you sure it exists?
I haven't read anything about it in the papers.
I think you're just making shit up.

"I think it's important to realize that I was actually black before the election."
As compared to WHAT, now, after the election? And I thought you were only half Black before the election?
It is important to realize that I am American and I still think you're a full blown commie, both now and before the election....

Yes, we realize that.
And if we go back just a little further, you were a jug-eared Kenyan muslim studying jihad
in an Indonesian madrassa.
