BELLEVILLE — A Belleville West High School student was beaten aboard a bus on the way to school Monday, and a police spokesman said the beating could be racially motivated.
The 17-year-old victim was white and the teen assailants were black. Police released a video of the beating, which shows the victim being punched repeatedly while other students on the bus gather to watch, some cheering. It doesn't appear that the victim did anything to provoke an attack and tried only to defend himself. Police said it all unfolded in a five-minute span.
The victim was trying to find a seat and was told by two students he could not sit next to them, police said. When he did sit down, one teen tried to push him out of his seat then began grabbing the victim's neck and punching him in the face.
The victim eventually returned to his seat, but another student began taunting him a few minutes later. The victim was then struck in the face.
It was unclear what, if anything, the bus driver did to stop the attack. Students intervened to help the victim both times.
"In my estimation, it's racially motivated," said Capt. Don Sax of the Belleville Police Department. He said one reason he had formed this opinion was that many of the students, most of whom were black, yelled their support for the beating.

I hate school buses. They should be required to put an adult on each bus, other than the driver.
My kids have never ridden them and never will. I remember the crap that went on when I was a kid. It's too much unsupervised time for the kids.

This isn't a rare event in Belleville. Happens everyday in the schools, to boys and girls. E.St.Louis has moved up the hill. Now if the Belleville PD charges them with a hate crime, then it'll be news. My son's family is leaving there this week for this very reason.

From what I've been told, Belleville used to be a real nice town. It's quickly deteriorating into a real shithole though. I guess a lot of the unsavory element from East St. Louis are moving there.

I was bullied on the school bus when I was in the 3rd and 4th grade by a BOY who had a crush on me...he hit me repeatedly but then would sit next to me and not allow anyone else to sit in my booth....I eventually kicked him in the stomach and told my parents. My father always drove me after that.
I do not want my kid on the school bus.

And people wonder why I had assigned seating and aides riding the buses when I was a school administrator for a private voucher supported school. These thugs were not going to let him sit anywhere and all the bus driver did was say sit down...REALLY??? What does that solve??? I am sure those two thugs will not be kicked off the bus either because their parental unit(s) will claim they have no way to get them to school otherwise. I remember living near Belleville as a child and it was a nice community but even then the buses I took were not really safe.....they had K-12 on the bus and I remember being offered smokes, weed, and alcohol from the high schoolers.

I rode a bus for 10 years, almost every day, and the other 2 years much of the time. I don't think I ever saw any fights , it just didn't happen. I went to a sort of small county school.

I also rode a bus and I remember in the 5th or 6th grade this boy following me off at my stop and beating me up daily. My mother was friends with his mom and it still didn't stop his bullying

I knocked the shit out of a kid back in the 3rd grade on the bus. He kept tripping every kid who got on the bus, and one day I got tired of it and decked him.
Best part about it was when the Principal found out why I did it, he congratulated me. :-)

That's far different from this video and others that we've seen. Yours was more of a case of putting a bully in their place.

Driving home today, listening to KRLD, I heard an interview with John Wiley Price. He said, sometimes kids will be kids, and didn't feel it necessary to BRING RACE INTO THE EQUATION. Any of all y'all from anywhere near DFW will know who JWP is.
Just saying, if he says it ain't racist, it couldn't be.

Karma is funny like that. I had two people who used to bully me in Junior High that I ran into later in life. One was working as a gas station attendant, and the other had gotten shitcanned out of the Air Force. Both made me feel good. :evillaugh:

I HATED the bus. I was picked on so bad in middle school, I chose to walk the mile to school. I also got sexually assaulted by this creep on the bus once. Oh yes, we took him to court and pressed charges. I remember the dad apologizing to me for his a**hole son's behavior. Last I heard, he was in prison for rape, who knew? :whatever:
So, yeah, my daughters will NOT be riding the bus ever.

Its never to early to teach your kids that defending themselves is ok. Get them to a class of any kind so they can.

Kids should learn to defend themselves, which is a good thin. I rode the school bus in elementary. It was not that bad. Middle school was the problem. Bullies are cowards and many are destined to be screwed up. Bullies are at risk for crime and drug abuse. Well gees, not surprised. Some bullies turn out to be Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Osama bin Laden, Eric Harris/Dylan Klebold, and Lori Drew, all who are scum of humanity.

Growing up in Texas, one couldn't ride the bus if they lived within a two mile radius of the school. I only got to ride the bus for one year, 1st grade. I don't remember it being all that bad. The rest of the time I was on my own. The only time it wasn't a PITA was Jr. High. I only lived two blocks from the school. All of the other years, I was 1½ miles or so.

I drove a school bus back school year 1962-63. I was 16 years old and in my senior year of high school. Of course way back then all the students were white and not much trouble. If we had a problem like this, we were allowed to break it up, put the students off the bus and call the highway patrol. Also, the offending students wouldn't have been allowed to ride the bus anymore that school year. Simple, nothing to it.
Shortly after they desegregated the schools all those student bus drivers were out of a job and the old rules went out the window. The lawyers would have had a field day if they had kept student drivers and the old rules.
My wife refuses to allow my son to ride the bus due to the problems she suffered at the hands of black students back in her day. The driver was black and allowed the black kids to rule the bus. So I pay taxes to feed, transport and educate 40% of the student population while I pay for my sons lunch and run a limo service twice a day.
Lets see, 14 miles, roundtrip, twice a day for going on the tenth year.....times a couple hundred more white parents doing the same....hmmmmm.....damn that's a lot of oil just in this one school district.....and since Obama came to power, it's getting worse.... "We haz's us'es a prez-e-dent now. Wez can do as wez plezzes now and day hant nutt'n you's can do 'bout it.", quote from a fellow black student of my son the day after the 2008 election.

I never seen a 16 year old drive a school bus when I was a kid. Must of been a common sight back than.

All the school bus drivers in SC were students back then. My route was 54 miles long, one way, longest one in the school district. In my county we all got the state paid $35 a month for driving the buses and a few dollars extra if we hauled the band or football team somewhere. In the next county over, the drivers got the state paid $35 plus $40 from their county for a total of $75 a month.
Believe it or not, the student drivers had a lower rate of accidents than the older drivers that replaced them.
....and there was one other benefit. If you had bus driver training, you got a 10% reduction on your car insurance.
