Jody Powell Dead at 65
A very likable guy. You'll be missed, Jody.
Jody Powell, Former W.H. Press Secretary, Dies
CBS News has learned that former White House Press Secretary Jody Powell has died. Powell, who was 65, served as President Jimmy Carter's press secretary from 1977 to 1981.
According to a family friend, Powell died of a heart attack at his home on the eastern shore of Maryland.
"Jody Powell will be remembered as one of Jimmy Carter's most trusted advisors," said CBS News White House Correspondent Peter Maer, who covered Jody Powell when Jimmy Carter was Georgia governor and U.S. president. "His role went way beyond being a spokesman. Powell and other close Carter aides became known as the so-called Georgia Mafia."
"He rose from being Jimmy Carter's campaign driver to press secretary and key advisor in the Georgia State House and the White House," said Maer. "Mr. Carter once said that Jody Powell knew him better than anyone except First Lady Rosalyn Carter."

15. He certainly had a way with words
Commenting on a February Cabinet meeting where the thermostat was set at 65 degrees to conserve energy, he quipped, "I'm told it was one of the most wideawake Cabinet meetings ever held."
He once likened the reporters trailing Bert Lance to a group of over-adrenalized bird dogs. "You feed 'em and groom 'em and exercise 'em for six months and then you finally turn 'em loose and they piss all over the truck and bite roots and eat butterflies. They go crazy."
Both from Time Magazine's archives. I've been studying the Carter Administration just beginning with last week there, and these were a couple of my favorite quotes.
