Title: New York residences raided in terrorism probe
Post by: ReardenSteel on September 14, 2009, 03:09:51 PM
Law enforcement agents raided residences in New York City on Monday as part of a terrorism investigation, and prepared to brief Congress about the probe.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne confirmed that searches were conducted in the borough of Queens by agents of a joint terrorism task force. He would not discuss the matter further.

Separately, federal authorities planned to brief senior lawmakers in Congress on the case later Monday.

A person briefed on the matter, who was not authorized to discuss the case and requested anonymity, said the raids were the result of previous law enforcement surveillance of individuals.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who was briefed by FBI officials, said he couldn't discuss much of the case because many of the details were still classified.

If President Bush were still in office, the fact that it's classified would not have mattered.  Schumer would have blabbed to the New York Slimes.
Different President, different rules.

That would not surprise me in the least, in fact I would expect it to be the case, what would surprise me is the MSM allowing word of it to ever see light of day.

doooood  :rotf:

I've been trying to follow up on this around the web but it's pretty new and in any case, likely a slow developing story by nature anyway. I only have found the, slightly more informative, below link. I believe Hays and Barrett's mention was the first the AP put out...

Two U.S. intelligence officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly, said the target of any purported attack — or who would carry it out — remained unclear.

Authorities have not found any weapons ready for use — such as a bomb — that would indicate an attack was imminent, they said. Nevertheless, one of the officials called the threat very real and emphasized the urgency of the threat.

NEW YORK, Sept 14 (Reuters) - New York City police and the FBI raided homes in the borough of Queens early on Monday as part of an investigation into suspected terrorism, focusing on one man who has been under surveillance, officials said.

Authorities searched at least two apartments including one shared by five Afghan men, taking some of them in for questioning, said one man who was questioned.

Members of U.S. Congress briefed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation said there was no imminent danger.

"There was nothing imminent, and they are very good now at tracking potentially dangerous actions and this was preventive," said Charles Schumer, a U.S. Senator from New York who was among those briefed by FBI officials.

A man who identified himself as Amanullah Akbar, a 30-year-old taxi driver, said the FBI raided the apartment he shares with four other Afghan men at 2:30 a.m.

How do you know?

I'm sure the defense attorneys will claim torture anyway, whether it really happened/happens or not.

Waterboarding isn't torture.

Every green beret gets waterboarded and they come out of it the best trained warriors in the world. Lots of pilots too. Calm, professional, level-headed.

Just because some internet troll has more sympathy for throat-slitting, wife-beating, baby-bombing sandrats than he does his own neighbors doesn't make it torture.

BTW - what if we found out about them through a warrantless wiretap through a US server exchange?

And what if we found out because some CIA agent put an empty gun to some sandrat's head?

Would you call the intel unusable, demand their release and maybe offer grounds for a civil action?

Don't forget; the definition of a terrorist has changed since the Ø-lightened Øne (piss be upon him) took office.

If the government-run news agencies are calling the suspects "terrorists", then it is at least as likely that the ones scooped up are just Iraq War vets, recently returned from their umpteenth deployment.   :banghead: :banghead:

They might also have raided a bible studies class.
