My 6 year old want to join the scouts
He came home today with a flyer that he got at school and is all excited about it because his friends want to join too.
My wife I am are morally opposed to a lot of BSA's stances on certain topics and do not like that fact that he will be taking an oath of a belief in God when he does not and we had not planned on talking to him about religion until he was older.
I was wondering how other parents here have dealt with this issue
I'm sure this DUmmie would rather have the kid join the Obozo youth core. :whatever:

They are such chicken shit wimps. You handle it the same way you would anything else you would say no to. Just tell the child no for goodness sakes! A 6 year old does not need to know why. What's so hard about this?

I know spiral scouts are for children of primarily Wiccan families, but they are open to everyone.

Lie to him an tell him that all scout troupes are breeding grounds for terrorist activity (not to mention, pedophilia).
Then, be truthful and remind him that pictures in his scout uniform will greatly embarrass him in the future. Especially if he stays in it in high school and goes for Eagle.
You may want to weigh letting him know that the number of years in BSA is inversely correlated with their chance to get laid.
There is some healthy open minded thinking about a 6 year old.

Ya know, I was a Crud Scout and later a Boy Scout, and I got laid, married, and had a coupla kids who also joined the Scouts, 4H, etc., who have now had my grandchildren, all 5 of 'em. Wonder what this DUmpster DIver is talking about?

Proud parent of an almost Eagle Scout. He is in the process of writing everything up now for a new playground at one of the Fisher Houses and he is only 16. What have the primitive children done by that age?

I'm calling a tentative 'BOUNCY' on the OP. The youngest BSA program is the 'Tiger Cubs'. They start taking them in at 7 years of age. So unless, the kid's one of the the youngest in his second grade class he wouldn't even have buddies that he'd want to join in with.

My son has been in Scouting since age 6. He is now a Life Scout working on Eagle. He has his brotherhood in the Oder of the Arrow. He has been asked recently to act as Chief of District(?) in the OA. Last spring he earned his God and Country Award. He started JROTC this year and being in the best Troop (the most active and strictist) in the district has given him a leg up in JROTC.
Yeah DUmmie, keep your kid out of the Cub Scouts. He might grow up to be somebody if you don't.

I believe I should make this post separate from my other one.
Last February a 71 year old gentleman presided over an Eagle Award presentation on Scout Sunday at out church. 60 years ago he had joined the Scout Troop sponsored by our church. It was while he was in the scouts that he learned about God and became a christian and an Eagle scout. Scouts were the motivating factor in him going to college and joining the military. When he retired after 20 years, he returned here and for a few years was the Scout master of the troop. He moved to another church and started a troop there. He served in the National Guard until age 60 and contined to be very active in scouting right up until his death last week.
He was first in the Army Rangers, then the Special Forces and then something else. He had a list of military awards and achievements a mile long. Did 3 tours in Viet Nam, was in a couple of the other lesser wars and Desert Storm. He finally retired as a full Colonel. They laid him to rest in our church cemetery last week with full military honors. A large group of his old Army buddies were there and a large group of scouts were also in attendance. I'm sure it made an impression on the Young boys. It was said that over the course of his life that he had presented the Eagle Award to over 400 scouts and this was his proudest accomplishment.

You know, I left scouting shortly after I got to Webelohs, because I sort of had a negative feeling about my new WeeBlow master. Looking back at it as an adult, I'm pretty sure he was a child molestor.

We should have been preaching abstinence first, and adoption second. What a frickin nut job...angst over scouts? We were involved in scouts while my boys were growing up and I can tell you they memorized the oath, said it at the beginning of the meeting and then never gave it another thought. When their son thinks back about his days in scouts he'd remember pinewood derbies, day camp, games, friendships, whittling, and making leather wallets. We're talking a 6 year old here. A 6 year old whose only thought is to join a club so he can hang out with his friends and do fun things. If he has this kind of stress over wanting to join an organization that the majority of kids leave before they even get to Boy Scouts how the hell is he going to deal with REAL issues. I bet if he came home all excited to join one of those friends of gays groups this guy would've been bragging about how wonderfully tolerant his son is! Maybe he could think of this as an exercise in tolerance too...you know, learning to live with those damn Christians.

This was my first cordless drill, and it was back in 1990. It was plenty for 8-10 year old boys....
Today, I have a 18v DeWalt, and a 18v Black & Decker Firestorm drill and saw.
My then 9 year old Cub Scout is now 28.... :-)
BTW, did I mention that I also have a 12v Lincoln grease gun?

I joined the Cub Scouts as a kid and became a Webelos. Liked it a lot.

I joined Tiger Cubs when I was six and stayed in Scouting for five years. I enjoyed my time there, short as it was.
