President Barack Obama this week has been laying the foundation for Senate Democrats to use a controversial budget maneuver to pass healthcare reform.
By offering Republicans olive branches during his address to Congress on Wednesday, Obama has set up a win-win situation. If GOP lawmakers embrace compromise, a healthcare bill would pass Congress easily. But the more likely scenario is that Republicans will continue to oppose Obama’s plan, and the president later this fall will be able to note he tried to strike a deal with the GOP but could not.
That will set up a Democratic argument that Senate leaders have been forced to use a partisan budget tool known as reconciliation to pass a health bill through the Senate by a simple majority, instead of 60 votes. Under the budget plan they passed earlier this year, Democrats could invoke the reconciliation process on Oct. 15.
Republicans contend that the use of reconciliation would be at odds with Obama’s call for bipartisanship during his 2008 presidential campaign. But Obama has countered that argument in recent days by forcefully resurrecting the anti-Washington rhetoric that got him elected.

I for one hope Pelosi and Reid try to use reconciliation to try to get it passed.
A. It won't work-- because every Moderate Democrat and Republicans will be united against it. Anyone who votes under reconciliation will be doomed in November, 2010.
B. Pelosi and Reid will face a revolt in their own party and this will posion the well for the other garbage upcoming--Immigration, Cap and Trade, etc.
C. This just gives the Conservatives another issue to use against the Libs.

If they do this, I hope to God the Republicans actually have the guts to give them full payback on it when the worm eventually turns.

If they try this, there's no guarantee that they'll be able to muster even 51 votes. Just imagine the caterwauling and wailing from the moonbats if it ever failed that way.

If it fails in this manner, it should kill government healthcare for good, but hopefully allow the conservative version of reforms to take place after 2010.

I've heard that this is indeed true--that they don't even have those 50 votes.

I think it's a scare tactic and I hope the republicans don't fall for it. If this bill were so great, the democrats have the votes for it so why is he blaming the republicans?
I heard that if they use this reconciliation process, the republicans will be able to use other parliamentary maneuvers to stall it for a long long long time.
Just more scare tactics from an ever desperate democrat party and a desperate Barack Obama. Methinks he's desperate to pass it because it helps the unions - they would receive up to $10 billion to bail out their health care trusts that are now hurting.
