Insurance companies are the "Death Panels". Updated at 8:50 AM
Edited on Fri Sep-11-09 09:17 AM by Tom Rinaldo
What "panel" decides who qualifies for "experimental treatments"? Which bureaucrats determine who qualifies for a liver transplant? Who runs the panels that approve or disapprove paying for medications that treat serious medical conditions? Who has rationed health care for decades by imposing insurance policy maximum payment "caps"?
If there are "death panels" in this nation they are run by those who profit most by denying payment for health care to those who need it most. And that isn't the government. For over 40 years, who has insured Americans in their golden years when their life expectancy is shortest and health care costs are typically highest? Medicare of course, a government run program.
People are correct to fear "death panels". They are run by the same unchecked market forces that completely destroyed our economy. Why should any sane person trust them with their lives?

So you will be fine with transferring the "death panels" from the private sector to the govt.
I don't have a lot of trust in corporations but I trust them more than I do the govt.

See, that's the deal, one of those things that makes one Republican or cosnervative or both.
Being sprung from the Populist Plains, I too distrust private corporations.
But one has recourse if one is wronged by a private corporation--lawsuit, doing business with its competitor, or ignoring it altogether.
One can't do that with a government-operated agency; no recourse.

Yep exactly.

Dealing with insurance companies is scary enough....having the government in charge will be worse.
I've had 3 lumpectomies in one breast....all benign - thank God....both the radiologist and surgeon recommended a double "scoop and stuff" as a preventative measure (my paternal grandmother, aunt, cousin have all had breast cancer).
At the time I had really good group insurance through Talbot's.
Two surgeries had cost the insurance company over $15,000 ('94 and '96)....yet they were not will to pay for a scoop and stuff until I was diagnosed with cancer!!! Then they would pay for the mastectomies, but would not guarantee paying for reconstruction until they determined if it was worth their costs....translated to if I had a good prognosis for survival.
Knock on wood....I have not had any significant changes in the last 5 years....and I am now able to get insurance - if I could afford it. ::)

With extensive work with private health insurance carriers on behalf of my clients, I have never had one client denied health insurance coverage on a medical insurance claim. My clients may have had to pay additional out of pocket expenses in addition to a deductible and appropriate co insurance arrangements, but with communications between the providing physician, the hospital, the carrier and the client.. operations and treatments were done and people were serviced and cared for. That will not be the case with a public option or with the not for profit co ops. Government will decide who lives and who dies.
The Government gave the finger to the American public when they started passing unfunded mandates on private businesses back in the 80's and the response from the states requiring certain conditions be covered as any other illness made more and more carriers to exit the marketplace. Couple that with the abject failure of any meaningful tort reform, and you have trial attorneys like John Edwards channeling a stillborn to tens of millions of dollars in awards that are cost shifted to the employers and their employees in their premium increases.
-
We will never have real health care reform until tort reform is done first....until frivolous lawsuits are penalized.
I was burned by a hot water bottle on the day I was born all down the left side of my body. Most of outside of my left arm had 3rd degree burns with deep tissue scarring. Took my parents 4 years to find a lawyer who would sue the hospital, physician and the Order of Nuns who ran the hospital....they got $50K and the lawyer took a third of it. I've had 3 reconstructive (2 skin graftings) surgeries on it.
If it had happened in today's medical world...and only my fingtertips had been burned.....the hospital would have offered millions for them to disappear into the woodwork.
There has to be a logical and reasonable method to lawsuits.
Justifiable ones deserve attention......ridiculous claims do not.

Anyone who doesn't know that Medicare decides who qualifies for "experimental treatments," decides who qualifies for a liver transplant, approves or disapproves paying for medications that treat serious medical conditions, and rations health care by imposing payment "caps," is a complete idiot.

Remember who we're dealing with here. They're called "DUmmies" and "DUmb****s" for a reason.
