Title: September 10, 2001
Post by: Ptarmigan on September 10, 2009, 12:19:08 AM
Does anyone remember what you did on September 10, 2001, which was a Monday. All I remember, the news was dominated by Chandra Levy, string of shark attacks, and Michael Jordan returning to NBA. The next day, innocence died, which was a Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

Was starting another busy work week as a Program Director for Clear Channel.  Getting everything lined up for the Fall Book, and trying to figure out what to get my girlfriend for her birthday.

It was a Monday, so I was recovering from a mild hangover.  We would always go out on Sunday nights, the end of my work week.   Later in the day we went to the vet to visit our dog that was there recover from surgery to remove a tumor. I'm sure that I had Fox News on, but don't remember what was going on the 10th.

It was a normal Monday. I was living in Texas and working in Dallas. The weather had been gorgeous and the news couldn't stop talking about Gary Condit/Chandra Levy. That all changed the next day.

I was laid off on September 7, the previous Friday, so Monday was my first day off work.  (The layoff had been planned for 3 years, as part of a phase out, and I was the one who shut the door and turned out the lights.)

I believe I lazed around all day, and did nothing, putting off until tomorrow all my REAL stuff to do, like follow up on job leads, grocery shop, do laundry, etc.

I was headed to the laundromat on Tuesday morning.  The first plane hit, right before I walked out the door.  I still have that entire day memorized.

In college that time. Went to class and studied. Nothing much. However, I saw a webcam image of the World Trade Center at night on that day though. Never forgot about it.

I was at work during the day and the next day when it happened I was picking up the kids from school we lived overseas so for us it was after 3 in the afternoon. I remember trying for 3 days to get ahold of family back here and a good friend who was in NYC at the time.

My wife was a gate agent for America West Airlines in Sky Harbor Airport.  September 10th and 11th, she was pushing out the early flights.  She had just finished loading a flight, had pulled back the jetway, and the tug was setting to push back the plane on 11 Sept, when she got a call from PHX tower (unusual - typically they'll pass messages to the airline GMs, and let them pass it down the chain) ordering her to bring the plane back and de-bark the passengers.  She did, and some very angry passengers were off loaded, and as she followed them up - leaving the flight crew to secure the plane - she saw the second plane hit the tower on the airport monitor.

Dead silence in a Class B airport is hard to do.  She heard it that day in Sky Harbor.
