WASHINGTON – Americans would be fined up to $3,800 for failing to buy health insurance under a plan that circulated in Congress on Tuesday as divisions among Democrats undercut President Barack Obama's effort to regain traction on his health care overhaul.

As Obama talked strategy with Democratic leaders at the White House, the one idea that most appeals to his party's liberal base lost ground in Congress. Prospects for a government-run plan to compete with private insurers sank as a leading moderate Democrat said he could no longer support the idea.

The fast-moving developments put Obama in a box. As a candidate, he opposed fines to force individuals to buy health insurance, and he supported setting up a public insurance plan. On Tuesday, fellow Democrats publicly

Wow they upped it from $2,500 to $3,800.

And guess who will bitching first and the loudest if it happens? That's right the morons supporting Obama care.

7. I don't like that idea AT ALL!

Most people really want health insurance. If it is affordable - and perhaps subsidized - few people would opt out.

Nobody should be forced to buy it. That just takes away one more freedom.

From a group that wants "free" universal single-payer health coverage. The cognitive dissonance is amazing.

WAKE UP, LITTLE GOONS!!  WAKE UP!!

NANNY-STATISM robs the poor of the little bit of quality-of-life they have.  It helps NO ONE.

The "RICH" don't care if "health care" cost a million a year...or if a can of Coke has a $10.00 tax on it.  The "RICH" can still afford it.  The "RICH" can still smoke EVIL cigarettes even if they cost $5.00 each (or $100.00 per pack).

SOCIALISM ROBS POOR PEOPLE.

4. Even if my fine ended up being a fraction of that number it would still kill me.

How ****ing stupid do you have to be to propose fining people for not being able to ****ING AFFORD something?

Because dipshit, since you won't have insurance, and will have to go on the government dole....seeing as how this bill is about insuring EVERYONE, that's your cut.

Suck it up, DUmbass. Whodathunk doctors, nurses, and everyone else involved in the industry don't work for free. What, you actually thought it was going to be free?  :lmao:

5. this is a gift to the health insurance corporations....

It is a disgrace that any Democrat and especially President Obama would even contemplate this ****ing rip off.

No it's not, DUmbass. Read above. That's your cut as a taxpayer. Out of that 3800, if you do get sick and need care, about 1000 of it will go to the hospitals. The other 2800 will go to special interest groups....and no......it won't be the insurance industry. Remember, now you're insured by the Gub'mint. Insurance companies be damned. You got your wish, now write the f'n check, moron.

Seriously, what kind of f'n moron would think this is a gift to insurance companies? That makes no sense at all to anyone with an IQ above 50.

I've read several news items that basically said the only reason the insurance companies would get on board is if there were mandatory policies.  That would force the healthy people to pay for something they won't use much.  I think,  they'll use it when they have to pay for it though.

If the government fines people, that money won't go to insurance companies. They already have 100,000 middle men to suck the tax dollars dry. They don't need 100,001.

Nope those fines will probably go into the general revenue stream.

For any lurkers who are "on the fence", this is why we despise idiots on the left. They want everything in the world and a bag of chips.....they just don't want to pay for it.

The Individual Mandate must die. BTW, the analogy to car insurance is a lie. Nobody is forced to own a car.

And even then, not all states mandate similar coverages or levels, or even require that good drivers even buy insurance.  The person holding the title to your vehicle will, but that's not the same as the state.

20. you think *this* would finally get Americans off their asses and into the streets

I read through their bonfire and they are some pissed off.  I knew they would be once they found out about it.  But no, they just had to follow blindly like sheep, because it was a dem bill.  Hey lurking DUmmies, want to join the lousy Freepers on the 9/12 march on Washington?

3800, or, 316.67 per month for healthcare....and probably cheap healthcare at that. I pay about 100 bucks per month and get excellent coverage.

Hey DUmmies, see what happens when the government does something to make things "more affordable"?

Given that my employer pays 75 percent and I pay 25, my total healthcare package (including dental, vision, and LTD) comes out to just under $300/month.  Oh, snap.  I'm guessing "da gub'mint" doesn't come close.

Consider this.  On average most employers pay 75% of the health care costs, and the employee pays 25%.  This is also a pretax deduction, so you are getting an added benefit (albeit a small one) of having your taxable income decreased.

If an option is provided, that is less than what the company is paying for your insurance, the employer may consider dropping their option.

That being said, the costs of health care to an employer are WAY more than just the 75% of the premium costs.  Claims play into it as well, and the pool of employees can determine which way that goes.

I have already heard our CFO state if an option is made available for everyone, that is less than what we are currently paying, that he sees no need in continuing for paying for it.

And that is not a good option.

An 18-page summary of the Baucus proposal was obtained by The Associated Press. The complex plan would make dozens of changes in the health care system, many of them contentious. For example, it includes new fees on insurers, drug companies, medical device manufacturers and clinical labs.

Hmmm so what they intend to do is make it more expensive for everyone. First make it mandatory then make the insurance companies, drug companies, etc pay the govt fees. The fees will be passed on to us the consumer. Maybe I am wearing tin foil here but sounds like they are trying to push costs up so that we will want a public option that costs less.

No tinfoil, friend.  Consider also, that nearly every financial officer of every business in the U.S. will make the logical conclusion that switching to the public option is in the company's best financial interests.

Call it what you will, but the logical outcome is a single-payer option, by default.

This must be our line in the sand, folks.  Of all the stupid things the Dems can do while in office, this one can't be "undone," per se, and it will destroy the best health care system in the world.  It firmly entrenches the government in every aspect of our private lives.  Beyond that, over half the country doesn't want it.  Passing this cluster**** of a bill will invite open hostilities, in my humble opinion.

Precisely my concern.  My CFO has already stated the exact same thing.  Why offer care if it is that expensive, and they can get it elsewhere for less.

You can self-insure in many of them, as well, though it may involve posting one Hell of a bond to do it, and it is therefore a rarely-exercised option.  The states generally require 'Proof of financial responsibility,' which is NOT always necessarily insurance.
