Title: Fred Mills Dead
Post by: Eupher on September 08, 2009, 09:37:37 AM
Received a Facebook notice in my email this morning.

Admittedly, Fred Mills was not a high-profile guy, except in the music (brass) world.

Fred played trumpet in the Canadian Brass, a rather irreverent brass quintet that got its start in the late Sixties. Fred was noted for his impeccable piccolo trumpet playing. Fred and Ronald Romm, the other trumpet player with the Canadian Brass, recorded the first theme for CBS' Sunday Morning, in unison. The performance of the trumpet fanfare (Abblasen) attributed to Gottfried Reiche, a trumpeter/composer of the Baroque era (roughly 1680 to 1750), is the signature piece of the program. The recording of two trumpeters sounded like one player due to their performance precision.

The recording was superceded by Wynton Marsalis in more recent years, who played it solo. True to form, Wynton added a few flourishes to the original work.

Fred Mills left the Canadian Brass some years ago in favor of teaching. But his work inspired untold thousands of musicians while he brought the piccolo trumpet into the jazz idiom with style, grace, and just a touch of panache.

He will be missed.

Moved this to GD, not because I felt it wasn't worthy of Breaking News, but because it didn't really meet any of the posting requirements for it.

University of Georgia music professor and renowned trumpet player Fred Mills was killed Monday in a wreck east of Atlanta.

Mills, who was 70, died after a crash in Walton County, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Details surrounding the wreck have not been released.

Born in Guelph, Canada, Mills was a founding member of The Canadian Brass, making over 40 recordings on several record labels and performing with the famed brass quintet at over 3,500 concerts in Asia, Europe and North America.

Mills joined the UGA faculty in 1996. In addition to teaching trumpet, he coached a graduate brass quintet, The Bulldog Brass Society. ...

I wasn't sure of the BN protocol, but didn't see anything that precluded posting this bit there. *shrugs*.

Matters not - this is not a big deal to 99% of the members here. I thought I'd post it because it isn't even on the web yet (apart from Facebook) and thus is brand new. Thor might be familiar with Fred's work, but I would be hard pressed to know if anybody else has even heard of the Canadian Brass, much less Fred Mills.
