"WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The U.S. unemployment rate jumped to a 26-year high of 9.7% in August as nonfarm payrolls fell by 216,000, the 20th consecutive monthly decline, the Labor Department estimated Friday. U.S. payrolls have dropped by 6.9 million to 131.2 million since the recession began in December 2007, the government data showed. Unemployment has increased by 7.4 million during the recession to 14.9 million. The 216,000 decline in payrolls was close to market expectations of a 233,000 drop, but the unemployment rate rose higher than the 9.5% level expected. The unemployment rate was 9.4% in July. It was the smallest decline in payrolls since August 2008. " MarketWatch (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/us-unemployment-rate-jumps-to-26-year-high-of-97-2009-09-04)

I guess it's not going to be a jobless recovery, but a JOBLOSS recovery.

And how do the propagandists in the MSM react to the news?

By telling us this is a good thing because ONLY 200K jobs were lost last month.

Every day is opposite day in Liberal Looney Land!

....but but but this is not the change Ozero promised!

I told my moonbat coworkers that at the end of Zero's term, I was going to post a chart with the inflation, deficit and unemployment rate numbers comparing the end of Bush's term with Zero's.  This is going to be fun!  Well not fun for us americans who KNEW better.

Except that the Libs have such a severe case of BDS...that they will blame Bush for whatever failures Obama has in in one and only term in the WH.

Possibly..but that is when we jump in and say, Zero's passing of more stimulus packages has only made it worse, not better.  That usually shuts them up.
I am proud to say that my sister in law who was a huge moonbat when she joined the family is now converted to the Right side.

the real unemployment figure is at least 16%. Over a million will lose their benefits next month and won't count as unemployed any more. So the "official" rate will see a stunning drop. Unless benefits are extended, AGAIN

Hi,

Last analysis I saw showed it closer to 20%.  Whatever it is, it is terrible.

I expect national celebrations next month when the "official" rate drops a percentage point because of the million or so lopped off the benefit roles. Even though they are still not working.

16.8 percent, if you look at BLS stats.

Look at the U-6 column.

Look at the U-6 column.

Mrs. E is still officially part-time - and is included in said stat.

My company announced 800 layoffs by the end of the year.
Those are 800 high tech "American Only" jobs.
