Yesterday my son came home with a social studies assignment. It was to ask his parents two questions.
1. Are you in a union?
2. If you are, how do you feel about it and if you're not, why not?
Am I being totally paranoid here? These questions kind of freaked me out. It's not the school's business if I'm in a union or not.

I think I'd use that as the answer...and if your son gets into trouble for it, rain hell-fire down on the school.

If you're not, tell him why you're not. Be polite and factual. The poor kids need some sanity to counter-balance what's sure to be a pro-union message from their teacher.
Just my $0.02.

He knows why we aren't in a union and he knows our feelings about it. I just don't think it's any business of the school's to know if we belong to a union or not.
